Costanza Bonarelli, wife of the Lucchese Matteo Bonarelli, a pupil of Bernini, was the secret lover of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. However, Gian Lorenzo's brother, Luigi Bernini, also secretly frequented Costanza. Blinded by jealousy, Gian Lorenzo attempted to kill his brother Luigi and ordered a punitive disfigurement on Costanza's face.
It was only thanks to the family's connections that Bernini did not suffer serious consequences for his actions.
