2 Euro Commemorative Luxembourg

The first €2 Commemorative coin from Luxembourg was minted in 2004 and is dedicated to Grand Duke Henri. The coin was issued on 27/07/2004.

On the Obverse, the Luxembourg €2 coin features the profile of His Highness Henri facing right towards his monogram. The Grand Duke's coat of arms is his initial H intricately crafted with a dense beading, topped with a Royal Crown, also detailed.
To the right along the edge of the central nickel-brass part, the twelve stars symbolizing the European Union are arranged.

On the outer rim of the coin, the inscription reads at the bottom: Henri – Grand-Duc de Luxembourg – at the top left is the Clipper, symbol of the Mint Director Brouwer, followed by the year 2004 and the Winged Caduceus, symbol of the Mint, and immediately after that the inscription LËTZEBUERG.

On the Reverse, the coin features the same face as all other €2 coins, which is the map of Europe with borders marked between the various countries.

The second 2 Euro Commemorative coin from Luxembourg was minted in 2005, featuring Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duke Adolphe to commemorate the 100 years since Adolphe's death, Henri's 50 years, and his first 5 years of Grand Duchy. Minted and issued on 15/02/2005 by the Helsinki-Vantaa Mint and the FDC version by the Paris Mint.

On the Obverse, the 2 Euro Luxembourg 2005 coin showcases the profiles of the two Grand Duke Henri prominently and his predecessor, Grand Duke Adolphe, in the background. Both profiles face right, with their respective names inscribed below: HENRI *1955, the year of birth, and ADOLPHE +1905, the year of death.
At the top in a semicircle, the inscription – GRANDS-DUCS DE LUXEMBOURG –.

Surrounding the central disc, in the cupronickel part, the inscription ★ L ★ Ë ★ T ★ Z ★ E ★ B ★ U ★ E ★ R ★ G ★ (LËTZEBUERG) appears along with the year of issue of the commemorative: 20 ★ 05.

Here we are at the third 2 Euro Commemorative coin from Luxembourg, minted in 2006 to celebrate the 25th Birthday of Guillaume, the heir to the throne. This bimetallic coin was issued on 6/02/2006 and exists in two variants, as we will see later.

On the Obverse, this 2 Euro Luxembourg 2006 coin features a profile of Grand Duke Henri, with the profile of Guillaume, the future Grand Duke, in the background.
Below the two portraits is the minting year 2006, and above is the name of the country LËTZEBUERG.

There are two variants regarding the symbols depicted on the coin:

All around the coin are the classic 12 five-pointed stars, representing the European States.

On the Reverse, the Common Side is the same for all bimetallic coins.

The second 2 Euro Commemorative coin from Luxembourg was minted in 2007, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, treaties signed in 1957 to establish the EEC (European Economic Community) and also EURATOM. Bimetallic coin minted on 25/03/2007

On the Obverse, the 2 Euro coin Luxembourg 2007 features at its center the book of the Treaties signed by the six Member States. The book of treaties, with the word EUROPE above it, appears to rest on the pavement of Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome viewed in perspective. In fact, the Campidoglio is the place where the treaties were signed on March 25, 1957.

Here we have the first Hologram, as in the circle to the left above the book of the Treaties of Rome is depicted the hologram of Grand Duke Henri.
This trick was used to maintain both the original design and the portrait of the Grand Duke. We will see this solution again in the 2009 coin.

At the top of the coin, there is an inscription in an arc on two lines TRAITÉ DE ROME / 50 ANS. At the bottom, the year of minting is placed followed by the inscription: LËTZEBUERG.

On either side of the year, there are the symbols of the Paris Mint, namely the Cornucopia with coins, and the Horn, symbol of the Mint Director Hubert Larivière.

All around are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European States. In the star at 5 o'clock is engraved the State symbol of France, the letter F.

The Reverse is the same for all 2 Euro coins; however, it is the first bimetallic coin minted by France with the new Common Side and thus with the map of European Countries represented without borders.

Also from 2007 is the bimetallic coin depicting Grand Duke Henri and the Grand Ducal Palace. Coin issued on 04/02/2007

On the Obverse, prominently on the right, is the three-quarters portrait of Grand Duke Henri looking to the left, with the façade of the Grand Ducal Palace depicted in perspective in the background to his left.

At the bottom of the coin is the inscription LËTZEBUERG, while the year 2007 is vertically on the left with above it the Cornucopia featuring coins from the Paris Mint and below the Horn of the Mint Director Hubert Larivière.

The €2 Commemorative coin from Luxembourg minted in 2008 features another architectural element and a portrait, in this case, the Château de Berg and the portrait of Henri. It was issued on 1/02/2008.

On the Obverse of the 2 Euro Luxembourg 2008 coin, the portrait of Grand Duke Henri is prominently displayed in a three-quarters view facing to our right. In the background is the frontal view of the Château de Berg. Below, at the bottom of the coin, is inscribed LËTZEBUERG, while the year 2008 is at the top with the Cornucopia, the symbol of the Paris Mint, on the left and the Horn, the symbol of the Mint Director Hubert Larivière, on the right.

The Reverse features the Common Side.

For the 10th Anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union, in 2009, the Eurozone countries minted a coin with a common design, which Luxembourg, however, modified. The EMU commemorative coin was issued in Luxembourg on 15/01/2009.

On the Obverse of the 2 Euro Luxembourg 2009 coin, a primitive man is depicted merging with the Euro symbol €, representing the history of trade, from bartering to the Euro. The difference from the common design is that the entire central part of the coin is covered by a hologram depicting the face of Grand Duke Henri, which looks either to the right or left depending on the angle from which it is viewed.

At the bottom, the inscription EMU 1999-2009 appears, and at the top LËTZEBUERG.

Surrounding the design are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states. At the bottom left of the central star is the symbol of the Mint Director M. Brouwer, which is the Clipper Ship, while on the right is the symbol of the Utrecht Mint, in this case, the Winged Caduceus. Finally, the initials of the designer ΓΣ (Georgios Stamatopoulos) are engraved above the date 1999.

The Common Side is on the Reverse of the coin.

The second commemorative €2 Luxembourg 2009 was minted to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Ascension to the Throne of Grand Duchess Charlotte, who was crowned on January 14, 1919. This bimetallic coin was issued on 15/01/2009.

The Obverse of the coin features the usual portrait of Grand Duke Henri in the foreground and that of Grand Duchess Charlotte in the background. Both profiles are in three-quarters view and face to our left.

On the right side of the coin, a sharp vertical cut separates the portrait of Henri from the inscription LËTZEBUERG and the year of minting 2009.
On either side of the year are the symbols of the Mint that produced the coin.

In the outer circle of the bimetallic coin, the silver part made of cupronickel, the 12 five-pointed stars are engraved, arranged in a circle as in the symbol of the European Union.

On the Reverse, the coin features the Common Side, like all other €2 coins.

In 2010, the Luxembourg commemorative coin features the portrait of Grand Duke Henri and his Coat of Arms. The coin was issued on 14/01/2010.

On the Obverse, the 2 Euro Luxembourg 2010 coin displays the portrait of Grand Duke Henri facing right, with a Coat of Arms engraved on the right. The depicted Coat of Arms is the so-called “Small Coat of Arms of the Grand Duke”, which features the shield of Luxembourg divided into 4 parts, each part hosting a heraldic lion. Above the shield, the Crown is engraved with intricate details.

Also on the right side, but at the top, the mint year 2010 is engraved straddling the two parts of the bimetallic coin. To the right of the year, on the cupronickel part, the Winged Caduceus is engraved as a symbol of the Utrecht Mint. On the left, in the nickel-brass part, the Sailing Ship is engraved as a symbol of the Mint Director Brouwer.
The inscription LËTZEBUERG also spans across the two parts of the bimetallic coin and is engraved in the central lower part of the coin.

The outer circle in cupronickel of the commemorative coin features the twelve stars of Europe in a circle.

On the Reverse, the coin presents the Common Side, which is the same for all other 2 Euro coins.

Here we are in 2011 with the Commemorative coin dedicated to the 50th Anniversary of the appointment of Jean by Grand Duchess Charlotte. Coin minted on 3/02/2011.

In this case, the Obverse of the coin features three portraits: in the foreground is Grand Duke Henri, in the background Grand Duke Jean, and in the third background Grand Duchess Charlotte. All three portraits are facing left, with each name—Charlotte, Jean, Henri—beneath their respective faces.

At the top of the coin, in the center, is the year of minting 2011, with the emblem of the Luxembourg Mint, the Winged Caduceus, on the right, and the Sailing Ship, symbol of the Mint Director, on the left.

The outer circle is characterized by the usual European stars.

Here is another commemorative shared with other European Union countries, the 2 Euro Luxembourg 2012 EURO. Issued on 03/02/2012.
As with other common commemoratives, a way was found to maintain the original design while also including the portrait of the Grand Duke.

On the Obverse of the 2 Euro Luxembourg 2012 EURO coin, the Euro symbol can be seen engraved, perfectly positioned at the center of the globe, surrounded by various elements such as people, a ship, a factory, and wind turbines, all symbols of the importance of the Euro in its various aspects.
In the center, superimposed on the Euro symbol, is engraved the hologram featuring the portrait of Grand Duke Henri facing right.

At the top of the coin, the inscription LËTZEBUERG is engraved, and at the bottom, the date 2002 2012. The mintmark of Utrecht and its Director Brouwer are engraved to the right of the coin at the top: Sailing Ship and Winged Caduceus.

All around, as always, are the twelve five-pointed stars symbolizing the European states.

On the Reverse, the Common Side of the two euro coins is depicted.

Also from 2012 is the €2 commemorative coin dedicated to Guillaume IV, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death (+ February 25, 1912).
This bimetallic coin was issued on 03/02/2012.

On the Obverse, the coin features a close-up of the effigy of Grand Duke Henri, with the portrait of Grand Duke Guillaume IV depicted behind him, characterized by his distinctive mustache and round glasses. Both are looking to our right, and their names are inscribed; in the case of Guillaume IV, the date of death +1912 is also included. In the background, Luxembourg is depicted in detail.

In the upper central part, the year of minting 2012 appears, with the inscription GRANDS-DUCS de LUXEMBOURG below it. On either side of the year, the mint marks are present:

On the outer circle of the bimetallic coin, the twelve stars of the European Union are engraved; however, unlike other coins, the stars are engraved and not in relief as usual, and they are also thicker with less slender 5 points compared to the stars on other coins.

Another commemorative coin from 2012 was issued for the wedding of Prince Guillaume and Countess Stephanie de Lannoy. Issued on 20/12/2012.

The first thing you notice on the Obverse is that the portrait of Grand Duke Henri is not in the foreground, but in the background compared to the portraits of the couple. To the right is the smiling Prince Guillaume in a tie, behind him to the left is the smiling Countess Stephanie de Lannoy, and in the background to the left is Grand Duke Henri. All portraits are frontal, all looking towards us, and are smiling.

Below the three portraits is the inscription in three lines: PRËNZENHOCHZÄIT / LËTZEBUERG / 2012. The mint symbols are on either side of the minting year 2012, so:

All around are the 12 stars of Europe arranged in a circle.

On the Reverse, the coin features the common face shared by all other 2 Euro coins.

The 2013 commemorative coin was issued in honor of the Hungarian National Anthem and its 20th Anniversary. The coin was minted on 7/11/2013.

On the Obverse of the commemorative coin, to the right, is depicted the profile of Grand Duke Henri facing left. In front of him and thus on our left, below the inscription Ons Heemech, is engraved the National Anthem of Hungary complete with sheet music and lyrics. The anthem was written in 1993 by Michel Lentz and composed by Jean Antoine Zinnen.

Below, separated by a raised line, is the inscription LËTZEBUERG and beneath it the year of issue 2013 with the mint symbols on either side:

On the edge of the bimetallic coin, on the cupronickel part, are the symbolic stars of the European Union arranged in a circle.

The Reverse of the coin features the common face that is the same for all other 2 Euro coins.

In 2014, the €2 commemorative coin was minted to celebrate the 175th Anniversary of Luxembourg's Independence. This bimetallic coin was issued on 6/02/2014 by the Mint of Utrecht.

As we can immediately notice on the Obverse, the 2 Euro Luxembourg 2014 coin is divided into 3 sections; the upper right section features the profile of Grand Duke Henri looking to the right. The left panel displays the inscription vertically in three lines:
1839 2014 / LËTZEBUERG. Above and below the year 2014 are the mint marks, above the winged caduceus (Mint of Utrecht), and below the sailing ship (Mint Director Brouwer).

In the lower crescent-shaped panel of the coin, there is the inscription ONOFHANGEGKEET with 175 Joër below it.

All around are twelve stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the coin features the common face that is the same for all €2 bimetallic coins.

For the 50th Anniversary of the Ascension to the Throne of Grand Duke Jean, a commemorative €2 coin was issued in 2014. Issued on 11/6/2014 by the Mint of Utrecht.

On the Obverse, the usual portrait of Grand Duke Henri on the right and Grand Duke Jean on the left behind him. Both portraits face left and are shown in three-quarters, with their names below. The year of minting 2014 is at the bottom center of the coin, and on either side are the symbols of the Mint Director Brouwer and the Mint of Utrecht, the sailing ship and the winged caduceus, respectively to the left and right of the date.

At the top in an arch, the inscription 50e ANNIVERSAIRE DE L’ACCESSION AU TRÔNE DU GRAND-DUC JEAN appears, with a Crown engraved between the inscription and the portraits, and the date 1964 at the height of Grand Duke Jean.
In the surrounding circle made of cupronickel, there are the twelve stars symbolizing Europe.

The Common Side is on the Reverse of the coin.

In 2015, on the occasion of the 15th Anniversary of Grand Duke Henri's ascension to the throne, a commemorative coin is issued featuring his portrait and that of Grand Duchess Maria Teresa. The coin was issued on 11/06/2015 by the Mint of Utrecht.

On the National Side, the Obverse displays the frontal portraits of Grand Duke Henri and Maria Teresa, created using the same method as the commemorative coin from 2012 for the wedding of Guillaume and Stefanie. At the top right, the inscription reads 2000 Luxembourg 2015. Below, the inscription states: 15e anniversaire de l’accession au trône de S.A.R. le Grand-Duc, with the symbols of the Mint: sailing ship and winged caduceus, of the Director and the Mint of Utrecht.

The European symbol is the circle of 12 stars engraved on the outer part of the bimetallic coin.

Another commemorative coin from 2015 was minted to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Birth of the Nassau-Weilbourg Dynasty. This commemorative coin was minted on 22/10/2015 by the Utrecht Mint.

On the Obverse, the coin features a design divided into two semicircles separated by a band that bears the inscription LUXEMBOURG. On the left, the smaller semicircle displays the portrait of Grand Duke Henri facing forward. On the right, the larger semicircle showcases a sequence of 5 portraits arranged in a semicircle and in perspective, one behind the other: In the foreground is Henri's predecessor, Grand Duke Jean, behind him in the second plane is Grand Duchess Charlotte, behind her is Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaïde, second to last is Grand Duke Guillaume IV, and at the top is Grand Duke Adolphe.

Also on the right, along the perimeter of the coin in a semicircle, is the inscription 1890 – DYNASTIE NASSAU-WEILBOURG, which runs from the bottom to the top.

In the outer circle of the bimetallic coin, the twelve stars symbolizing the European Union are arranged in a circular pattern.

The Common Side is as always the Reverse of the coin.

The third coin of 2015 that we analyze is one of those common to various countries of the European Union, issued to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the European Flag created in 1985. In this case, the Luxembourg variant includes the portrait of Grand Duke Henri.
It was minted and issued on 10/12/2015 by the Utrecht Mint.

On the Obverse, in the so-called National Side, the 2 Euro Luxembourg 2015 Flag coin appears like the others issued by different European countries. Thus, we see the spiral circle formed by the twelve stars that become the stylization of twelve human figures surrounding the central Flag.
At the top right, there is the inscription LETZEBUERG 1985-2015.

It is right above the central Flag that the hologram of Grand Duke Henri appears facing right. The hologram solution was also adopted previously in 2012 for the 2 euro Euro, in 2009 for the 2 euro EMU, and in 2007 for the 2 euro of the Treaties of Rome.

Below the prominent star is the signature of the author Georgios Stamatopoulos, while the symbol of the sailing ship of the Mint Director Brouwer is on the left of the minting year, and on the right, in the cupronickel part, is engraved the Winged Caduceus, symbol of the Utrecht Mint.

The outer ring of the bimetallic coin is engraved with the twelve European stars.

On the Reverse, the coin features the Common Side as with all other 2 Euro coins.

The 2 Euro Commemorative coin from Luxembourg 2016 is minted and dedicated to the Bridge of Grand Duchess Charlotte and its 50th Anniversary. The Grand Duchess Bridge was constructed in 1966 to connect the center of Luxembourg with the suburban district of Kirchberg.
The coin was issued on 12/05/2016 by the Mint of Utrecht, but there are two variants.

On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Voluntary Military Service in Luxembourg, the commemorative coin of 2017 was issued. The release took place on 9/02/2017 from the Mint of Utrecht. However, there was also a Proof version of this coin that we will see later.

In 2017, on the occasion of the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Grand Duke Guillaume III, which took place in Brussels on February 17, 1817, a commemorative coin was minted by the Utrecht Mint on 10/26/2017.
However, a Brilliant Uncirculated version is also issued for this commemorative coin.

The first 2 Euro Commemorative coin from Luxembourg minted in 2018 was issued to mark the 150th Anniversary of the Constitution in Luxembourg. It was commemoratively minted in rolls by the Mint of Utrecht on 25/01/2018 and subsequently released in two other versions, a coin card and a Brilliant Uncirculated.

The second €2 Commemorative coin from Luxembourg minted in 2018 is dedicated to Grand Duke Guillaume I and was issued on 27/08/2018 to mark the 175th Anniversary of his death which occurred in 1843. This commemorative coin was issued in rolls by the Mint of Utrecht and also in the FDC Coincard and Proof versions.

In 2019, on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the ascension to the throne by Grand Duchess Charlotte, this commemorative coin was issued. It was distributed starting from 27/06/2019 by the Utrecht Mint. In addition to the version available in rolls, there is also the FDC version.

The second coin minted in 2019 was issued to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Universal Suffrage. This €2 commemorative coin was issued by the Mint of Utrecht and distributed in rolls on 25/09/2019. The second emission is in Brilliant Uncirculated.

Here we have the commemorative coin from 2020 minted to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Prince Henri (1820-1879+). This commemorative coin was issued in rolls by the Utrecht Mint on 21/09/2020 and also in the €2 / BU coin card version in Brilliant Uncirculated.

This is a commemorative coin dedicated to two new parents, Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie. It is the €2 Commemorative Luxembourg 2020 Hereditary Prince Charles. Issued in 12/2020 in three variants: rolls, Coincard, and Proof.

On the Obverse, the portrait of the new family consisting of Grand Duke Guillaume, Grand Duchess Stéphanie, and the hereditary prince Charles in his mother's arms.
Below is the inscription S.A.R. de Prënz Charles with the birth date 10.5.2020, preceded by a star. To the left is the monogram of Grand Duke Guillaume, the H with the crown, and the vertical inscription LËTZEBUERG.

On the nickel part of the coin, in addition to the stars symbolizing Europe, are the symbols of the Mint:

In 2021, a commemorative coin is dedicated to Grand Duke Jean. The 2 Euro Commemorative Luxembourg 2021 Grand Duke Jean is issued on 19/04/2021 in the Roll, Coincard, and Brilliant Uncirculated versions.

On the Obverse, the portrait of Grand Duke Jean is depicted with the inscription JEAN 1921 on the left and that of Grand Duke Henri with the inscription HENRI on the right.
At the top in a semicircle, the inscription GROUSSHERZOGE VU LËTZEBUERG is engraved. Meanwhile, at the bottom of the coin, the profile of the City of Luxembourg is illustrated with the minting year 2021.

On the outer ring of the coin, the mint marks and the 12 stars of the European Union are featured:

The 2 Euro Commemorative Luxembourg 2022 Erasmus Program coins were issued in Luxembourg, as in all Eurozone countries. Issued on 01/07/2022.

On the Obverse, there is a portrait of Desiderius Erasmus writing his essay “In Praise of Folly”, with the number 35 depicted in the background, formed by intertwining lines, symbolizing exchange between European countries. In the upper left corner is the usual Luxembourgish hologram featuring the Monogram of Grand Duke Henri, the H with a crown.

At the bottom right, the inscription 1987-2023 ERASMUS PROGRAMME LËTZEBUERG appears. Surrounding it are the 12 stars of Europe.

The Reverse of the coin features the Common Side identical to that of the 2 euro coin.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Luxembourg 2022 Flag of Luxembourg is issued to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Flag of Luxembourg. The coin was issued on 5/07/2022.

On the Obverse of the coin, we see on the right the tricolor flag of Luxembourg, while on the left is the smiling portrait of Grand Duke Henri. At the top right, the year marking the beginning of the legal protection of the Luxembourg tricolor 1972 is engraved, while at the bottom is the year of issue of the coin 2022.

At the bottom of the coin, the inscription LËTZEBUERG is engraved, slightly protruding on the nickel part of the bimetallic coin, where the circle of European stars is located.

The Reverse of the coin features the Common Side identical to that of the 2 euro.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Luxembourg 2022 Anniversary of the Wedding of Grand Ducal Heirs Guillaume and Stéphanie was minted to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the marriage of Guillaume and Stéphanie. Coin issued on 5/07/2022

On the Obverse, there are the two profiles of the Grand Dukes Guillaume and Stéphanie facing left, with Guillaume in the foreground holding two intertwined wedding rings. On the left side, there is a circle with the monogram of Grand Duke Henri, the crowned H. At the top left, the name STEPHANIE is inscribed, and on the right, the name GUILLAUME, at the bottom LËTZEBUERG 20. OKTOBER 2012, the date of the wedding, which is partially inscribed on the outer ring of the bimetallic coin, surrounded by the 12 five-pointed stars of Europe.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Luxembourg 2023 Grand Duke Henri Member of the Olympic Committee is minted to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Grand Duke Henri as a member of the International Olympic Committee IOC. Coin issued on 24/04/2023.

On the Obverse of the coin, there is a profile of Grand Duke Henri facing right above part of the three Olympic rings and the mint marks with the signature of the designer Chiara Principe. Also on the right, there are stylizations of some Olympic athletes, one of whom forms the number 25 with the Olympic torch between the years 1998 and 2023. On the left, the inscriptions LËTZEBUERG and GROUSSHERZOG HENRI are engraved.

At the bottom right, the phrase MEMBER OF THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE is engraved, part of which is inscribed on the ring part of the bimetallic coin, where the 12 five-pointed stars of Europe are located.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Luxembourg 2023 Anniversary of the Chamber of Deputies is minted to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Chamber of Deputies. The coin was issued on 24/04/2023.

On the Obverse, to the left, is the smiling portrait of Grand Duke Henri, while in the background to the right is the Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg. At the top and to the right, the inscription 1848 Chambre des Députés is engraved, followed by the mint marks.

At the bottom, the inscription LUXEMBOURG 2023 is engraved, surrounded by the twelve stars of Europe in a circle.

On the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the introduction and circulation of coins in Francs in Luxembourg, a €2 commemorative coin will be issued featuring the image of Feierstëppler. To honor the Luxembourgish Franc, an aesthetic reference to the 1924 coin designed by Armand Bonnetain is expected, which depicted a worker engaged in labor at a small foundry.
