2 Euro Commemorative Portugal

The first 2 euro commemorative coin from Portugal was minted in 2007 and is one of those common to several European countries, dedicated to the Treaties of Rome and their 50th Anniversary. Minted on 25/03/2007 in Lisbon (INCM).

On the Obverse, the design common to other countries is engraved, featuring the paving of Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome with the large book of the Treaties signed on March 25, 1957, above it. To the right is the mintmark of Lisbon (Portugal) INCM.

Above the signed document appears the inscription EUROPA, below the year 2007 and PORTUGAL on two lines in a central banner.
In the upper part of the coin, also on two lines, the inscription TRATADO DE ROMA / 50 ANOS appears.
Still on the obverse, but in the outer ring, the 12 stars of the European Union are engraved in a circle.

The Reverse is the Common Side of the 2 euro coins distributed throughout Europe.

In 2007, the 2 euro commemorative coin for the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union was also issued. Released on 1/06/2007.

On the Obverse, the National Side, a large tree is depicted, specifically a cork oak with a bare trunk. To the right, the inscription POR/TV/GAL appears in three lines, while on the left is the coat of arms of Portugal.
At the bottom of the coin, in a semicircle, the signature of the designer Maria Irene Vilar, the minting year 2007, the Lisbon mint mark INCM, and the inscription PRESIDÊNCIA DO CONSELHO DA UE are engraved.
Surrounding the coin are the twelve stars of the European Union arranged in a circle.

On the Reverse, the Common Side is represented, which is the same for all 2 euro coins, both commemorative and non-commemorative, displaying the nominal value and the map of Europe.

Let's move on to another Portuguese coin, this one is from 2008 and was minted in honor of the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Issued on 22/09/2008.

On the Obverse of these 2 euro Portuguese coins, the Atlantic Ocean is stylized in a geometric design. In the shining horizon like the sun, the Coat of Arms of Portugal appears centrally, below the inscription PORTUGAL and further below the date of issue of the coin: 2008.

On the lower part of the coin, around the central disc, the inscription 60 ANOS DA DECLARAÇÃO UNIVERSAL DOS DIREITOS HUMANOS is engraved. At the top right, the signature of the artist Esc. J. Duarte and the mint mark INCM are engraved.
Surrounding the central disc are arranged in a circle the stars that make up the logo of Europe.

The Reverse, the opposite side of the bimetallic coin, features the Common Side with the nominal value of 2 euros.

In 2009, another coin was issued that is the same for all European countries using the Euro, this is the Commemorative dedicated to the Economic Monetary Union. The coin was issued on 25/03/2007.

The Obverse of this 2 euro Portugal features a stylized prehistoric figure merging with the € symbol of the euro. The signature of the designer Georgios Stamatopoulos is located at the bottom right (ΓΣ). The word PORTUGAL is inscribed at the top, and UEM 1999-2009 at the bottom.

Surrounding it are depicted the 12 five-pointed stars arranged in a circle, as in the symbol of the European Union.

The Common Side, or value side, is the reverse of the coin that displays the value of 2 euros and a map of European countries.

Another €2 commemorative coin from Portugal minted in 2009 is dedicated to the Games of Lusophony. It was issued on 09/06/2009 by the Lisbon Mint.

On the Obverse, the central part features the Logo of the Olympic Games of Lusophony, which is a stylized figure with a rhythmic gymnastics ribbon.
At the top, there is the Coat of Arms of Portugal with the inscription PORTUGAL in a semicircle below it.
On the lower part of the coin, along its perimeter, is the symbol of the Lisbon mint INCM followed by the inscription 2.os JOGOS DA LUSOFONIA LISBOA and J. Aurélio, the engraver's signature.
Around it, above a texture of concentric circles, stylizing the Olympic stands, are engraved the twelve five-pointed stars representing all European States.

The Portuguese commemorative two euro coin from 2010 was issued to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Portuguese Republic. It was minted and released on 7/10/2010.

On the Obverse of this 2 euro coin from Portugal, there is a stylization of the Coat of Arms of Portugal featuring a profile representation of the Portuguese Republic facing right, with long hair and a crown of leaves. Behind the woman's head appears the signature of the designer OSE CÂNDIDO and the mint mark INCM.

In 2011, this Commemorative coin was issued to mark the 500th anniversary of the birth of the explorer and writer Fernão Mendes Pinto. Issued on 10/08/2011.

The Obverse features a ship sailing on the waves of the sea, created by a series of wavy inscriptions referring to his writings, his destinations, the city of Lisbon, and Portugal itself. At the top, the inscription in a semicircle reads FERNAO MENDES PINTO, followed by the year 2011 and preceded by the date 1511.
The European symbol is represented by the 12 stars arranged in a circle above the outer ring of the coin.

On the Reverse, we find the Common Side with its nominal value.

Also from 2012, specifically from 24/02/2012, the commemorative coin issued in all Eurozone countries is dedicated to the 10th Anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union, also known as EMU.

On the Obverse of this 2 euro Portugal coin, there is a stylized prehistoric figure fused with the euro symbol, surrounded by symbols of energy, finance, industry, commerce, and population. The word PORTUGAL is inscribed at the top. At the bottom, it reads 2002 2012. To the right, vertically, is the mint mark of Lisbon INCM.

To celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the construction of the Torre dos Clérigos, a commemorative coin was issued in 2013 featuring the Tower prominently. It was issued on 20/06/2013.

On the Obverse, the Torre dos Clérigos is clearly visible from a low perspective, positioned on the left, while on the right, the Ponte Dom Luis is seen, an arch bridge spanning the Douro river, connecting Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
Below the bridge is the coat of arms of Portugal with the inscription PORTOGALLO, and to the left of the bridge are the mintmark symbol INCM and the signature of the designer HUGO MACIEL. At the top of the coin, in an arc, is inscribed the text 250 ANOS TORRE DOS CLERIGOS – 2013.

In 2014, it was decided to dedicate the Commemorative coin to agriculture in honor of the International Year of Family Farming. Coin issued on 31/10/2014 by the Lisbon Mint.

On the Obverse, the National Side features an agricultural scene with typical elements of Portuguese agriculture such as potatoes, pumpkin, vegetables, a hen, and hand tools for working the land. Below the scene is the engraver's signature Helder Batista and the symbol of the Portuguese Mint INCM.
Arched at the top is the inscription AGRICULTURA FAMILIAR PORTUGAL 2014.

On the Reverse, the Common Side with its 2 euro denomination, identical for all European commemoratives.

In 2014, the Portuguese Mint in Lisbon also issued a commemorative coin for the 40th Anniversary of the Carnation Revolution. Release date: 04/23/2014.

The Obverse of these 2 euro coins features a stylized central carnation with the word PORTUGAL at the top and the coat of arms of Portugal itself. To the left, the inscription 25 DE ABRIL begins, composed of letters and numbers of varying sizes and not aligned. The commemorative coin of 2015 celebrates the 150th Anniversary of the Portuguese Red Cross. This bimetallic coin was issued on 15/04/2015.

The design featured on the Obverse of this Portuguese commemorative coin is a modular drawing that starts from the central cross, a historic symbol of the Red Cross, and multiplies, expanding through a play of repeating cubes. Below the central cross is a stylized hand, symbolizing the humanitarian service that the Red Cross provides in Portugal and abroad.

The 2015 features a Commemorative coin for the 500th anniversary of the arrival in Timor. Coin issued on 15/07/2015.

On the Obverse of the commemorative coin, on the left, there is a depiction of a Caravel from the 16th century, symbolizing the arrival of the first navigators on the Island of Timor. In the foreground on the right, the thatched roof of a typical island construction characterized by wooden sculptures, with the Lisbon Mint mark INCM below.

At the top right, the date 1515 is followed by the inscription PORTUGAL, while on the bottom left, the inscription TIMOR is followed by the year 2015, along with the signature of Fernando Fonseca, the designer.

Also from 2015, the two euro commemorative coins common to other European countries, dedicated to the 30th Anniversary of the European Flag. This coin was issued on 30/11/2015.

The Obverse of these 2 euros from Portugal features the European Flag from which a spiral of 12 stylized little figures in a star formation emerges towards us. On the right side, along the edge, is the inscription PORTUGAL 1985-2015.

Here is another commemorative coin dedicated to the Olympic Games, this time for the participation of Portugal in the Rio Olympics. Coin issued on 03/05/2014.

The Obverse features a stylization of an artistic installation by Joanna Vasconcelos, the Heart of Viana. The installation, inspired by the typical jewelry of Viana do Castelo, was created to support the athletes of the Portuguese Olympic team.

Below the tip of the heart is engraved the symbol of the Lisbon Mint INCM, and to its right the symbol of the Rio Olympics.

In 2016, the Commemorative coin dedicated to the Ponte 25 de Abril was issued to mark its 50th Anniversary. The coin was released on 19/07/2016.

On the Obverse of the 2 euro coin from Portugal in 2016, there is the Ponte 25 de Abril (Salazar Bridge until 1975), built in 1966 over the Tagus River to connect Lisbon and Almada. In the year 2017, a commemorative coin was issued for the 150th Anniversary of the Portuguese Police Force. Commemorative date: 13/07/2017.

The Obverse features a stylization of two human profiles and four buildings as an emblem of the urban areas and the citizens who inhabit them, protected by the work of the Police. On the right, the three words radiate: DIREITOS / LIBERDADES / GARANTIAS. In the center of the coin, at the top, is the acronym PSP and the coat of arms of the Police itself.

On the left, the dates 1867 – 2017 SEGURANÇA PÚBLICA are displayed, with the symbol of the Lisbon Mint INCM below, followed by the signature of the designer JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES and PORTUGAL.

For 2019, Portugal chose to commemorate Ferdinand Magellan on the 500th anniversary of his circumnavigation! A Portuguese explorer who lends his name to the Strait of Magellan, he was also the first European navigator to sail the waters of the Pacific. Coin dated 05/08/2019.

The Obverse of this proudly Portuguese 2 euro coin features a portrait of Magellan with his deep gaze scanning the horizon to our left.
To the left is inscribed the text 2019 – PORTUGAL preceded by the INCM symbol of the Portuguese Mint and the signature of the designer Luís Filipe Abreu.

The 2019 coin also commemorates the 600th Anniversary of the Discovery of Madeira Island. It was issued on 06/08/2019.

The Obverse features a nautical chart with the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo. The mint mark INCM is located at the top right, while the artist's signature Júlio Pomar is on the right.

Surrounding the design is the inscription in a circle:

The 2020 commemorative coin is dedicated to the University of Coimbra for its 730 Years since its founding. The coin was issued on 1/09/2020.

Commemorative coin celebrating the participation of the Portuguese team in the thirty-third Tokyo Olympic Games 2020, which were postponed to July/August 2021 due to COVID. Issued on 18/05/2021.
Although the games take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021, the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020 retain the 2020 date in their name. An unprecedented situation created by the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The Obverse features the Portuguese Cross of the Order of Christ, the identifying logo of the Portuguese Olympic team, along with the flagpole and below it the 5 interlocking rings symbolizing the Olympics. Surrounding it is the inscription 2021 PORTUGAL NOS JOGOS OLIMPICOS DE TOQUIO '20. On the left is the name of the Portuguese Mint CASA DA MOEDA and the signature of the designer Francisco Providência.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Portugal 2022 Southern Atlantic Crossing was minted to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first crossing of the Southern Atlantic by aviators Carlos Viegas Gago Coutinho and Artur de Sacadura Freire Cabral, who departed from Lisbon on March 30, 1922, with a Faire III biplane, making several stops before arriving in Rio de Janeiro on March 30. The journey lasted a total of 79 days, with 62 hours and 20 minutes spent in flight. The coin was issued on 30/03/2022.

The Obverse of the coin features a Faire III biplane in flight, moving from right to left, with the inscription PORTUGAL 1922-2022 below. On the left side of the coin, there is the inscription TRAVESSIA DO ATLANTICO SUL.

At the center, at the bottom, there are 4 stars representing the constellation of the Southern Cross. In the lower right, there is the signature of the author José João de Brito Inc. JJ Brito and the mint mark CASA DA MOEDA. Surrounding the design are the 12 five-pointed stars of the European symbol.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Portugal 2022 Erasmus Program was issued in Portugal, as in all countries of the EURO ZONE, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus Program. The coin was issued on 1/07/2022

On the Obverse of the coin, to the right, is the portrait of Desiderius Erasmus writing his essay “The Praise of Folly”. The philosopher is depicted above a bundle of links that crosses the background of the coin, with the interweaving forming the number 35. At the bottom right, there are the engravings 1987-2022 and ERASMUS PROGRAMME PORTUGAL.

At the bottom, the mint mark CASA DA MOEDA is engraved. Above Erasmus's right hand are the initials of the author, Joaquin Jimenez, JJ, and on the outer edge, there are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European Union.

The 2 Euro Portugal 2023 World Youth Day in Lisbon is minted to celebrate the XXXVIII World Peace Day from August 1 to 6, 2023, in Lisbon. The coin was issued on 19/07/2023.

On the Obverse of the coin, there are 23 stylized young people carrying the Pilgrim's Cross, representing the diversity and multiculturalism of the youth present at the World Peace Day. The group of young people is embraced by a warm hug from the Pope. Above is inscribed the text JORNADA MUNDIAL DA JUVENTUDE LISBOA 2023 and below PORTUGAL, CASA DA MOEDA (Mint mark) and the signature of the designer JOÃO DUARTE. On the left is engraved the Coat of Arms of Portugal.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Portugal 2023 Peace Among Nations is issued in Portugal to wish for Peace among Nations. The coin was issued on 15/11/2023.

On the Obverse of the national side, the word PEACE appears in 16 different languages, as many as the official languages of the 20 countries belonging to the Eurozone. The inscriptions are arranged radiating around the armillary sphere at the center of the coin:
