2 Euro Commemorative San Marino

The very first coin: 2 Euro commemorative San Marino 2004, a coin minted in honor of Bartolomeo Borghesi, Numismatist and Epigrapher.

On the Obverse, we can immediately notice the representation of the face of Bartolomeo Borghesi with the inscription SAN MARINO to the right. To the left, there is the mint mark R and the inscription BARTOLOMEO BORGHESI. At the bottom left, we also find the initials of the author, ELF (Ettore Lorenzo Frapiccini).

All around, we can see the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states, while at the bottom, in the outer circle along with the stars, is the year of minting.

Marino Bartolomeo Borghesi, a bronze bust created by Giuseppe Romagnoli and inaugurated in San Marino at the terrazza del Cantone on November 16, 1904. Dedicated to the Archaeologist known as the Prince of Numismatists, who arrived in the Republic of San Marino in 1821 and remained until his death in 1860.

The next coin to discuss is the 2 Euro commemorative San Marino 2005, issued to celebrate the World Year of Physics.

On the Obverse, we can see one of the greatest figures in physics, Galileo Galilei, observing through a telescope with a globe beside him and the year of minting. Arched at the bottom is the inscription WORLD YEAR OF PHYSICS, while at the top is SAN MARINO. To the left of the depiction, we can notice the mint mark R, and to the right, the initials of the designer LDS (Luciana de Simoni). The third coin in this fantastic collection was minted in 2006 in honor of a truly important historical figure, Christopher Columbus:
the 2 Euro Commemorative San Marino 2006. Specifically, we can see on the Obverse the representation of Columbus' face alongside the three Caravels as they sail the ocean and the R of the Rome mint. At the bottom, there is a cartouche with the dates 1506 – 2006 engraved inside. At the top, we find the inscription SAN MARINO and at the bottom, the initials of the author LDS, Luciana de Simoni.

Posthumous portrait of Christopher Columbus created in oil on canvas by Sebastiano del Piombo (Sebastiano Luciani) in 1519 and displayed at the MOMA in New York. Dimensions 106.7 x 88.3 cm. The portrait of a Man in Mannerist style most likely depicts Christopher Columbus, as suggested by the inscription at the top “the Ligurian Columbus, the first to board a ship in the world of the antipodes 1519“. Therefore, it is not a true portrait, but a posthumous portrait by the Venetian Luciani, known as del Piombo.

Here we have the 2 Euro commemorative San Marino 2007, a coin minted in honor of Giuseppe Garibaldi.

On the Obverse, we can see the depiction of Garibaldi seated, with the inscription SAN MARINO to the left and the mint mark R. To the right is the signature of the designer Ettore Lorenzo Frapiccini. Photo of 1866 of Giuseppe Maria Garibaldi, born in Nice in 1807 and died on the island of Caprera in Sardinia in 1882 at the age of 74. A prominent figure of the Risorgimento, patriot, General, and above all, Hero of the Two Worlds. One of his greatest enterprises was the Expedition of the Thousand, which was crucial for the unification of Italy. He is currently buried in the Garibaldino Compendium of Caprera in the Maddalena archipelago in Sardinia. In his later years, he was often photographed seated as he was forced to use a wheelchair.

The 2 Euro Commemorative San Marino 2008 coin was issued for the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue.

On the Obverse, we can see the depiction of five stylized human figures representing the five different cultures present in Europe. Just below them are four books, which represent the sacred texts recognized by the communities. On the Obverse, we can see a beautiful representation of a detail from the Three Graces, freely inspired by the painting The Birth of Venus by the same Botticelli, which is housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. To the left, we can notice the inscription SAN MARINO followed by the mint mark R, while at the top is the year of minting 2010. On the right, the signature of the author Roberto Mauri.

The Three Graces is a detail from the Primavera painted by Sandro Botticelli in 1480, it is a tempera painting measuring 203×314 cm displayed at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
This Renaissance work features one of the three graces, companions of Cupid, dressed in a light veil, with hair partially gathered in braids and a central pearl. The grace dances lightly along with the other two under the gaze of Cupid himself.

On the Obverse, we can see a representation of the Tempietto di San Pietro in Montorio and the face of Bramante within a rectangular frame. Surrounding the design is a long inscription in an arc that reads BRAMANTE LAZZARI DELLE PENNE DI SAN MARINO. The bust of Costanza Bonarelli is a marble sculpture created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1637/1638, standing 72 cm tall, currently displayed at the Bargello Museum. It is the only work by Bernini created not on commission.

Costanza Bonarelli, wife of the Lucchese Matteo Bonarelli, a student of Bernini, was the secret lover of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. However, Gian Lorenzo's brother, Luigi Bernini, also secretly courted Costanza. Blinded by jealousy, Gian Lorenzo attempted to kill his brother Luigi and ordered a punitive disfigurement on Costanza's face.
It was only thanks to the family's connections that Bernini did not face serious consequences for his actions.

Another coin dedicated to an important historical figure. We are talking about the 2 Euro commemorative coin from San Marino minted in 2018 for the 500th anniversary of the birth of Tintoretto, an Italian painter among the foremost representatives of Venetian painting.

On the Obverse, we can see a representation of the embrace between the Madonna and Elizabeth taken from Tintoretto's painting, the Visitation, preserved at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. This 2 Euro commemorative coin from San Marino was minted in 2019 to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of the great Leonardo da Vinci. Issued on 04/04/2019. On the Obverse, we can indeed see the depiction of an Angel painted by Leonardo. This is a detail from the work Baptism of Christ preserved at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The work Baptism of Christ by Verrocchio and Leonardo da Vinci is an oil and tempera painting on panel dated 1475/1478 and is currently located at the Uffizi in Florence. Set in Palestine on the banks of the Jordan River, Verrocchio's painting reveals the intervention of the young Leonardo, who skillfully painted the angel on the left and very likely also the landscape and Christ himself. The extraordinary execution by Leonardo da Vinci even caused disappointment from his own master, who found himself surpassed by his young pupil.

We arrive at the last coin of this wonderful collection. Specifically, the last one is the 2 Euro commemorative coin from San Marino minted in 2019 in honor of the 550th anniversary of the death of Filippo Lippi, a renowned Italian painter. Issued on 29/08/2019. On the Obverse, we can see a detail from the work Madonna and Child along with two angels, preserved at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. At the top, we observe the inscriptions SAN MARINO and FILIPPO LIPPI in an arch, while at the bottom, there is the date 2019 and the initials of the designer. Finally, on the left, we note the date 1469 and the mint mark R. The designer is Maria Angela Casso.

The Madonna and Child by Filippo Lippi from 1465, tempera on panel measuring 92×63.5 cm, is displayed at the Uffizi in Florence, Italy. This work is commonly known as Lippina.

The face of the Madonna is attributed to that of Lucrezia Buti, Lippi's lover. The panel, likely inspired by the birth of their son Filippino, is of Flemish inspiration and is located in what was probably Lippi's home.

On the Obverse, one of Raffaello's earliest paintings is depicted, specifically the detail of the “Madonna di casa Santi“. This painting is located at the Raffaello Academy in Urbino, originally the artist's home. Below the depiction of the Madonna, the name RAFFAELLO is engraved, with the dates 1520/2020 on two lines at the top right, and on the left, the R mintmark. The Madonna di casa Santi is a fresco from around 1498 located at the Raffaello Academy in Urbino, originally the artist's home. This work was created by Raffaello Sanzio when he was just 15 years old; for a long time, it was believed that the fresco was the work of his father Giovanni Santi.

The fresco depicts the profile of Mary inside a dome with the sleeping child in her lap. Mary embraces the child Jesus and reads a book placed in front of her on a lectern.

In 2020, a commemorative coin was issued for the Republic of San Marino dedicated to Gianbattista Tiepolo and the 250th anniversary of his death. The 2 euro San Marino 2020 Tiepolo was issued on 27/08/2020 only in the Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof versions. The Obverse features the detail of the Angel from the painting Agar and Ishmael in the Desert, a work painted by Tiepolo in 1732, currently housed at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice. At the top is the inscription TIEPOLO, and at the bottom, SAN MARINO. To the right of the comforting angel, the dates 1770 and 2020 are engraved on two lines, and below the angel to the left are the initials of the author Claudia Momoni (C.M.). The author is Claudia Momoni.

Agar and Ishmael in the Desert is a work from 1732 by Gianbattista Tiepolo, oil on canvas measuring 140x120cm, currently displayed at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice.

The 2 Euro San Marino 2021 Dürer is the second commemorative coin of the Republic of San Marino for 2021, dedicated to the 550th anniversary of the birth of Albrecht Dürer. Issued on 27/08/2021. At the center, on the Obverse, there is a depiction of a detail from the painting created in Nuremberg in 1526 by Dürer, “The Virgin of the Pear”, with Dürer's monogram AD on the right, and below it, the artist's signature Valerio de Seta V d S. Below the Virgin with the child are the dates 1471 – 2021, to the left the inscription SAN MARINO with the mint mark R, and to the right DÜRER. Surrounding it are the twelve stars of the European Union. The designer is Valerio de Seta.

The Virgin of the Pear is an oil painting measuring 43x32cm painted by Dürer in 1526. The work is currently displayed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
This is the last Madonna painted by Dürer, created against a dark background in Nuremberg. The Madonna does not wear a veil and offers a pear to the child she holds in her arms.

In 2021, to commemorate the 450th anniversary of Caravaggio's birth, a coin was issued in his honor. The 2 euro San Marino 2021 Caravaggio was released on 1/03/2021.

On the Obverse, there is a depiction of his famous oil painting from 1954/55, the Penitent Magdalene. At the top, the inscription SAN MARINO ● CARAVAGGIO is engraved in a semicircle, with the dates 1571 – 2021 below on the left. To the right is the mint mark of Rome R and to the left is the signature of the designer Silvia Pratesi SP. Surrounding the design are the 12 stars symbolizing European countries. The designer is Silvia Pratesi.

The Penitent Magdalene is an oil on canvas measuring 122.5×98.5 cm painted by Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio, between 1594 and 1595. The work is displayed at the Galleria Doria Pamphilj in Rome. The model who posed for Caravaggio was the young seventeen-year-old prostitute Anna Bianchini, with whom Caravaggio had a tumultuous relationship and who posed for several of Merisi's works.

The commemorative coin from San Marino for 2022 is the 2 Euro San Marino 2022 Canova, minted to mark the 200th anniversary of the death of Antonio Canova. Issued on 10/04/2022

On the Obverse, there is a depiction of the Goddess Hebe, a sculpture by Canova representing the daughter of Hera and Zeus (Fourth version of Canova's sculpture). To the left is the inscription CANOVA and the year 1822, to the right the inscription SAN MARINO, the date 2022, and the symbol of the Rome mint R. At the bottom is the signature of the author Antonio Vecchio A.V. The outer circle of the coin features the 12 stars symbolizing Europe.

The version depicted on the 2 Euro San Marino 2022 Canova is the fourth version preserved in Italy at the Museo di San Domenico in Forlì. The version of the sculpture preserved in Italy is made of fine Carrara marble with gold decorations.

The portrait of Federico da Montefeltro by Piero della Francesca is an oil on panel painted between 1467 and 1472. It is part of the double portrait of the Dukes of Urbino, a diptych measuring 47x66cm that features Federico da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza facing each other. The diptych is displayed at the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence.
The portrait of Federico da Montefeltro dates back to 1467, while that of Battista Sforza was added in 1472, after her death due to childbirth at the age of 27.

Madonna and Child, Saint Sebastian and Saint John the Baptist, a work housed at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Oil on panel painted in 1943 by Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci, known as Perugino.

With the session of July 6, 2022, the Congress of State approved the numismatic emission program for 2023. To commemorate the 500th anniversary of Luca Signorelli's death, the 2 Euro San Marino coins dedicated to Signorelli in 2023 were issued. Coin issued on 05/09/2023

On the Obverse, there is an Angel taken from Luca Signorelli's painting “Elects in Paradise” with the initials of the engraver MB (Marta Bonifacio) under its foot and the R of the Mint of Rome above the hand. At the top, the dates 1523 • 2023 are displayed, with SAN MARINO on the right and SIGNORELLI on the left. Surrounding the central part of the bimetallic coin are the 12 five-pointed stars arranged in a circle, as in the logo of the European Union. The engraver is Marta Bonifacio.

The 2 euro San Marino 2024 Civil Rights have been issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Declaration that enshrines civil rights and the fundamental principles of the State of San Marino.
