2 Euro Commemorative Netherlands

The very first coin we will analyze is significant not only for the Netherlands but for all of Europe. This is the coin minted in 2007 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome. The coin features the same design and will be translated into the various languages, as many as the European states where it circulates.

On the Obverse of the 2 euro Netherlands 2007, we can indeed observe the representation of the Treaties open and signed by the six founding member states, with the word “EUROPA” prominently displayed above.

In the background, there is a beautiful depiction of the floor of Piazza del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo, the place where the Treaties were, in fact, signed.

Just below is the year of minting, “2007”, enclosed between the Utrecht mint mark and the mint director's symbol.
Even further down is the inscription “KONINKRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN”.

At the top, in an arch and on two lines, are the inscriptions “VERDRAGVAN ROME” “50 JAAR”. All around, we can see the usual 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse is the Common Side of the 2 Euro coins from the Netherlands. It is also important to emphasize that this is the first coin minted by the Utrecht mint to feature the second type of Common Side with the modified map.

The coin is included in the FS Divisionale, in a FDC Coincard, and in the BENELUX set.

Let's move on to the next coin. Specifically, this €2 Commemorative coin from the Netherlands was minted in 2009 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union.

As we can see, the Obverse features a representation of a primitive, stylized figure alongside the Euro symbol. The meaning of this design is that the Euro represents the final stage of the economic journey of European citizens.

It is also important to highlight that the design of the €2 Netherlands 2009 was chosen by the European citizens themselves through an online survey.

Above the design, the inscription “NEDERLAND” is present in an arc, while below it reads “EMU. 1999-2009”.

On the outer edge, there are 12 stars representing the European states. If you pay attention to the sixth star, you can notice that it is enclosed between the mintmark of Utrecht (on the right) and that of the mint director (on the left).

As for the Reverse, it is, of course, the Common Side, which is the same for all €2 coins.

The coin is included in the FS Division Set, in a FDC Coincard (issued in 2013), in an FS Box, and in an FS Capsule.

We arrive at the first coin minted in honor of a historical figure. Specifically, this is the €2 Commemorative coin from the Netherlands minted in 2011 in honor of Erasmus of Rotterdam, the Dutch theologian, philosopher, humanist, and essayist.

The coin commemorates not only the author but also his most famous work, Praise of Folly, on the 500th anniversary of its publication.

On the Obverse of the 2 euro Netherlands 2011, we can indeed observe Erasmus, facing left, in the act of writing his book. To the left of the author is the effigy of Queen Beatrix.

Between the faces of the two individuals, the words “Beatrix Koningin der Nederlanden” are inscribed, meaning “Beatrice Queen of the Netherlands.” Directly above Erasmus's writing hand, we can see the mintmark of Utrecht and that of the mint director side by side, with the minting year “2011” just below.

All around, distributed on the outer crown, are the classic 12 five-pointed stars, representing the European States.

We return to a type of coin common to other European states. Specifically, this €2 Commemorative coin from the Netherlands was minted in 2012 to celebrate the 10 years of euro banknotes and coins.

On the Obverse, we can observe the representation of the Euro symbol perfectly placed at the center of the globe to indicate the centrality and importance of the currency for Europe. Surrounding it are various other elements that reinforce this concept.

For example, we can notice the factory representing industry, the ship for trade, the wind turbines for energy, and of course, the people representing European citizens.

At the top in an arch is inscribed the word “NEDERLAND” while at the bottom are the dates “2002 – 2012”.
On the outer edge, we can observe the usual 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, it features the Common Side, which is the same as other €2 coins.

We turn once again to a coin that marks an important event for the country in question. We are talking about the €2 Commemorative coin minted in 2013 to celebrate the 200 years of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

On the Obverse, we can observe a magnificent representation featuring the faces of all seven kings of the Netherlands who have ascended to the throne over these 200 years, united by a ribbon.

Arched around this representation are the inscriptions “WILLEM – ALEXANDER KONING DER NEDERLANDEN” “200 JAAR KONINKRIJK”.
At the bottom, the minting year “2013” is present alongside the symbol of the Utrecht mint and that of the mint director.

The next coin is from the same year as the previous one, namely 2013. Specifically, this €2 Commemorative coin was minted to commemorate the coronation of His Majesty Willem-Alexander, who succeeded Queen Beatrix on April 30, 2013.

On the Obverse, we can indeed observe the representation of the faces of the two sovereigns facing left, with Beatrix in front and Willem-Alexander behind.

At the bottom, there is the inscription “28 JANUARI” while all around it reads “Willem-Alexander prins van Oranje – Beatrix Koningin der Nederlanden”.

Also at the bottom center is the year of minting enclosed between the Utrecht mint mark and that of the mint director.
On the outer edge, we can see the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

The Reverse is identical to that of any other common €2 coin, featuring the Common Side.

The next coin among the Dutch 2 euros is truly special. Like the one just seen, this €2 Commemorative coin from the Netherlands was minted to celebrate Queen Beatrix and His Royal Highness Willem-Alexander in 2014.

As we can observe on the Obverse of this coin, in this case, the faces have been reversed; they are facing right instead of left, and the order is also different.

While in the previous coin, the face of Queen Beatrix is superimposed over that of Willem-Alexander, in this case, it is the latter who is above the former Queen.

Surrounding the arch, we can see the inscription “Willem-Alexander Koning der Nederlanden – Beatrix Prinses der Nederlanden” and the year of minting “2014” enclosed, as in this case, between the Utrecht mint mark and that of the mint director.

The Common Face of the €2 coins represents the Reverse of the coin.

Finally, we have arrived at what is currently the last €2 Commemorative coin from the Netherlands. Specifically, we are talking about a coin minted in 2015 to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the European Flag.

This is a coin common to all European states, featuring on the Obverse a representation of the European flag placed at the center. Surrounding the flag are 12 stylized human figures representing the unity of citizens and various states in building a new and better Europe.

At the top, we can see the inscription “NEDERLAND,” while to the right are the dates “1985 – 2015.” Also to the right, between the flag and the dates, are the mintmark of Utrecht and that of the mint director.

All around are engraved 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

As for the Reverse, it features the Common Side of the €2 coins from the Netherlands.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Netherlands 2022 Erasmus Program was minted in 2022 and is dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus Program (European Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students). Issued on 1/7/2022

The Erasmus Program referenced here was established in 1987 by the insight of Sofia Corradi, an educator and collaborator of Domenico Lenarduzzi. Together, they managed to create the conditions for launching the intercultural exchange project for students across Europe. The name chosen for the project refers to Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam, a Humanist, Philosopher, and Theologian, and also the author of The Praise of Folly.

On the Obverse, the profile of Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam is depicted, facing left, engaged in writing his most famous essay (The Praise of Folly), with the signature of the designer Joaquin Jimenez JJ above. In the background, a series of bands intertwine to form the number 35, and at the center of the coin is the monogram NL of the Dutch Republic. At the bottom right, the inscription 1987-2022 EURASMUS PROGRAMME is engraved, and at the bottom center is the winged caduceus, the symbol of the Dutch Mint, along with the raven, the symbol of the Mint director Bert van Ravenswaaij.

On the outer part, the 12 stars symbolizing the European Union are distributed.

On the Reverse, the value side of the coin displays the value of 2 euros and the new map of Europe.
