2 Euro Commemorative Vatican

The first coin in this collection commemorates the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Vatican City State.

On the Obverse, the coin features a depiction of the perimeter of the City with St. Peter's Square and the corresponding Basilica at its center. To the left, there is a circular inscription “75° ANNO DELLO STATO” while at the top right are the dates “1929 – 2004”.

On the right, the mintmark R and the names of the sculptor “VEROI” and the designer “L.D.S. Inc.” are present.

Surrounding the design are 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states, while on the Reverse, the coin has the same face as all other 2 Euro coins.

Now we move on to the second commemorative 2 Euro coin from the Vatican. In this case, the coin commemorates the XX World Youth Day.

Specifically, on the Obverse, the 2005 Vatican 2 Euro coin features the depiction of the Cologne Cathedral overlooked by a comet star. Surrounding it is the circular inscription “XX GIORNATA MONDIALE DELLA GIOVENTU”.

On the left, the name of the sculptor “LONGO” and the engraver “E.L.F. Inc.” are present. All around are the 12 five-pointed stars interrupted at the top by the mint mark and year of minting, while at the bottom is the inscription “CITTÀ DEL VATICANO”.

On the Reverse, the coin features the same design as the others.

Let's move on to another coin, namely the one that commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Swiss Guard.

On the Obverse, the coin features the depiction of a Guard taking his oath to the Pope with a flag in hand. At the top, the inscription arches “GUARDIA SVIZZERA PONTIFICIA” while at the bottom, the arching text reads “CITTÀ DEL VATICANO”.

On the left, the date 1506 is present, while on the right, the mintmark and the year of minting 2006 are displayed. Near the flagpole, the name of the designer “O.ROSSI” can be found, while below the mintmark are the initials of the engraver “M.C.C. INC.” Surrounding it all, as always, are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, we find the same face as the other 2 Euro coins.

We arrive at the first coin honoring a very important figure. Specifically, this €2 coin commemorates the 80th birthday of Pope Benedict XVI.

On the Obverse, there is a portrait of Pope Benedict XVI facing left, surrounded by the circular inscription “BENEDICTI XVI P.M. ÆTATIS ANNO LXXX • CITTA' DEL VATICANO,” with the name of the city slightly larger. To the left, the mintmark R and the year of minting 2007 are present. Below, we find the names of the designer and engraver. As usual, the 12 stars representing the member states of the European Union are present all around.

On the Reverse, it features the same design found on practically any €2 coin.

Another coin dedicated to a very important historical and religious figure. Specifically, we are talking about Saint Paul and the coin that commemorates 2000 years since his birth.

On the Obverse, the coin depicts the scene of the conversion of Saint Paul on the road to Damascus. In the foreground, Saint Paul is shown on his horse, startled by a sudden light. In the background, we can see Damascus itself. To the left, the inscription “CITTÀ DEL VATICANO” is present, while to the right is “ANNO SANCTO PAULO DICATO”.

Also on the right, we find the year of minting, the mint mark, and the name of the designer, while further down are the initials of the engraver. Surrounding the design are the usual 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states, while on the Reverse, the coin is identical to the other 2 Euro coins.

Now let's move on to a coin dedicated to the world of science. In particular, this commemorative €2 coin from the Vatican was minted in honor of the International Year of Astronomy.

On the Obverse, there is a beautiful geometric design divided into four parts. In the upper right section is the “Creation of the Stars” by Michelangelo, in the upper left is Galileo's telescope, in the lower left is a sundial, and in the lower right is a next-generation telescope.

At the bottom of the design, there is a sun surrounded by stars and planets. Above this design are the mintmark and the year of minting, while the names of the designer and engraver are present on the left and right, respectively.

As always, the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states are placed around the design, while on the Reverse, we see the same face as the other common coins.

We return to a coin minted for a religious celebration. In this case, we are talking about a €2 coin that commemorates the Priestly Year.

On the Obverse, there is a scene depicting a shepherd trying to save a sheep from the mouth of a lion. At the top in an arc is the inscription “•VATICAN CITY•” while below, in smaller text, is “PRIESTLY YEAR”.

On the left, we find the year of minting, at the bottom the mint mark, and on the right the initials of the designer and engraver.

Surrounding it are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states. On the Reverse, we see the usual side featuring the depiction of Europe.

We return with a coin honoring the youth day. Specifically, this coin commemorates the XXVI day of Youth.

On the Obverse, some young people are depicted raising the official logo of the day, the Spanish flag, and the Vatican flag. At the bottom of the coin, we see the inscription “CITTA' DEL VATICANO” while at the top are the inscriptions “XXVI” and “G.M.G.” Additionally, within the design, the year of minting, the mint mark, and the initials of the designer “O.ROSSI” can be observed, while to the right are those of the engraver “M.C.C. INC.”.

All around, we find the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states, and on the Reverse, the same face as the other 2 Euro coins.

The next coin we are going to look at is the one issued to commemorate the VII World Meeting of Families held in Milan.

On the Obverse, the coin features a family with the Cathedral Square in the background, the location where the meeting took place. At the top, there is an arch inscription reading “CITTA' DEL VATICANO” while at the bottom, also in an arch, is the inscription “VII INCONTRO MONDIALE DELLE FAMIGLIE”. To the left of the design, we find the name of the designer and the engraver, while on the right is the year of minting. The mintmark R is located at the bottom.

As always, surrounding the design are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states. As for the Reverse of this Vatican 2 euro, it features the same design found on any 2 Euro coin.

Now let's look at the €2 coin minted to commemorate the Sede Vacante of 2013. On the Obverse, we notice the coat of arms of the Cardinal Camerlengo which dominates the emblem of the Apostolic Chamber.

Surrounding it, on the left, is the inscription “CITTÀ DEL VATICANO” while on the right is “SEDE VACANTE MMXIII”. At the bottom, we find the name of the author “P. DANIELE” and the initials of the engraver “M.C.C. INC.” while slightly to the left is the mint mark R. All around, as usual, we can see the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the Vatican €2 coin 2013 “sede vacante” instead features the same face as the other €2 coins.

We arrive at another 2 Euro coin from the Vatican that commemorates a youth day. Specifically, this coin was minted in honor of the XXVIII World Youth Day.

On the Obverse, it features the statue of Christ the Redeemer, a famous statue located in Rio De Janeiro, surrounded by young people celebrating. The inscription “XXVIII W.Y.D. VATICAN CITY RIO 2013″ encircles the design. To the right, the mintmark and the name of the designer are present. As with other coins, the 12 five-pointed stars representing the member states of the European Union are also included.

The Reverse is the same as that of other 2 Euro coins.

Now let's talk about a coin that commemorates a historically significant event for mankind. In particular, this €2 commemorative coin from the Vatican was minted to mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

On the Obverse, there are some bricks that have fallen from the Berlin Wall on which the inscription “25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL 1989 2014” is engraved. In the background, among the bricks and barbed wire, there is an olive branch that overlooks the Brandenburg Gate. All around, we find the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

At the top, there is an arching inscription “VATICAN CITY” while further down, the mint mark, the name of the designer “G. TITOTTO,” and the initials of the engraver are present.

The Reverse features the map of the Eurozone, as seen on other €2 coins.

Here we have another €2 Vatican coin minted to commemorate a meeting of families. In particular, this one was created in honor of the VIII edition of the meeting of families.

On the Obverse, we find depicted a globe surrounded by two families embracing it completely. This design is fully surrounded by two inscriptions. At the top, it reads “VIII WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES” while at the bottom it says “VATICAN CITY”. Between the inscription and the design, there are: at the top the year of minting, on the left the name of the author and engraver, and on the right the mintmark placed on the arm of one of the family members.

Around it, we also notice the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, it is identical to a common two euro coin.

Let's move on to another €2 commemorative coin from the Vatican City State. Specifically, this coin commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Vatican Gendarmerie.

On the Obverse, we find a Gendarme facing the dome of St. Peter's Basilica positioned to the left of the man. Surrounding it are two inscriptions. At the top is “CORPO DELLA GENDARMERIA 1816 • 2016” while at the bottom is engraved “CITTA' DEL VATICANO”. To the right, we find the name of the designer, while to the left is the mint mark and the initials of the engraver.

As is customary, the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states are present all around.

On the Reverse, we find, as with other €2 coins, the representation of Europe.

Another commemorative €2 coin minted to mark a religious event. In this case, it refers to the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy.

On the Obverse of the 2016 Vatican €2 coin, we see the depiction of Saint Martin of Tours on horseback, who with his sword divides his cloak in two to share it with a poor man kneeling at his feet. The design is surrounded by two inscriptions: “JUBILEE OF MERCY” and “VATICAN CITY”.

To the right, we find the year of minting, while at the bottom are the mintmark and the names of the designer and engraver. Surrounding this are the classic 12 five-pointed stars symbolizing the member states of the European Union.

On the Reverse, we find the same face as the other €2 coins.

Once again, a coin commemorating a very important religious event. In particular, we are talking about the €2 coin that commemorates the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of the Madonna of Fatima.

On the Obverse, we find the depiction of the three shepherd children who saw the Virgin Mary with the Sanctuary of Fatima in the background. At the top in an arc, there is the inscription “CITTA' DEL VATICANO” with the dates 1917 and 2017 just below. Just below the date 1917, the word “FATIMA” is also engraved.

Even further down from this inscription is the mint mark R. At the bottom of the coin, we find the signatures of the designer and the engraver on the left and right, respectively. Surrounding the coin are the usual 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states, while on the Reverse, we find the same face as the other €2 coins.

We arrive at a coin of incredible historical and religious significance. Specifically, this commemorative €2 coin has been minted to honor the 1950th anniversary of the martyrs Saints Peter and Paul.

On the Obverse, we see the effigies of the two Saints, Peter and Paul, accompanied by their symbols, namely the key and the sword. Surrounding them are two inscriptions: “CITTA' DEL VATICANO” at the top and “1950° DEL MARTIRIO DEI SANTI PIETRO E PAOLO” in the remaining space. To the right is the year of minting, to the left the mintmark, while at the bottom are the names of the designer and engraver.

As always, we can notice the 12 five-pointed stars that represent the European states surrounding the design.

The Reverse features the common face of other commemorative coins and the €2 coins.

Here we are at the penultimate coin of this collection. Specifically, this €2 coin was minted to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Padre Pio.

On the Obverse, prominently featured in the center, is the effigy of Padre Pio with the inscription “CITTA' DEL VATICANO” above and the italicized text “Padre Pio” below. To the left of the portrait is the date “1968” and further down is the signature of the designer “P. Daniele”. To the right is the minting year “2018” and below that are the initials of the engraver “VDS INC.” with the mint mark just underneath.

Surrounding the design are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European States, while on the Reverse, we again see the standard design common to all €2 coins.

Now let's move on to a commemorative coin created for purely cultural purposes. Specifically, this €2 coin was minted in honor of the European Year of Cultural Heritage.

On the Obverse of the 2 Euro Vatican 2018, we see the artwork “Group of Laocoön” depicting the priest Laocoön and his sons struggling against the serpents, a sculpture preserved in the Vatican Museums. Surrounding it is the inscription “EUROPEAN YEAR OF CULTURAL HERITAGE,” while at the bottom, on two lines, is “VATICAN CITY” with Vatican written in uppercase.

At the top right, we find the year of minting and the mint mark, while the names of the engraver and author are placed on the right and left. All around are the usual 12 five-pointed stars symbolizing the European states.

On the Reverse, we find the usual representation of Europe common to all €2 coins.

Finally, the last commemorative €2 Vatican coin was minted in honor of the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Vatican City State.

On the Obverse, we find the effigy of Pope Pius XI facing left with the Lateran Palace and the famous obelisk behind him. At the top, the inscription “VATICAN CITY STATE” is present, while at the bottom are the dates “1929” and “2019”. Below, we see the signature of the author “FUSCO” and to the right, the mintmark R.

As always, surrounding the design are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states, and on the Reverse, we find the same face as the other €2 coins.

In 2019, the 2 Euro Commemorative Vatican 2019 Sistine Chapel coins were minted. This coin was issued to mark the completion of restoration work that began in 1994. The coin was released on 1/10/2019.

On the Obverse, it features Christ the Judge and Mary, a detail from Michelangelo's fresco “The Last Judgment” in the Sistine Chapel. To the left is the inscription CITTÀ DEL VATICANO, and to the right CAPPELLA SISTINA – FINE DEI RESTAURI.
Also to the right are the dates 1994 – 2019 and the symbol of the Rome Mint R.

At the bottom are the signatures of the designers and engravers D. LONGO INC. A.M. (Daniela Longo and Annalisa Masini). These 2 Euro Commemorative Vatican 2020 coins are dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of Pope John Paul II. Karol Józef Wojtyla was born in 1920, became Pope on October 16, 1978, and remained in office until April 2, 2005. Issued on 06/23/2020.

On the Obverse of the coin, there is a portrait of Pope Wojtyla on the right with the dates 1920 2020, and the mint mark R.
On the left, there is the inscription PAPA GIOVANNI PAOLO II and the Basilica of Wadowice in Poland beneath the depiction of the lunar eclipse within the star of the Virgin Mary. The eclipse is indeed a phenomenon that occurred both on the day of his birth and the day of his death, which is why it has become a symbol of this beloved Pope.

The signatures of the authors are below the Basilica, while at the bottom is depicted a laurel branch and the inscription CITTÀ DEL VATICANO.

In 2020, the 2 Euro Commemorative Vatican 2020 coins are minted to mark the 500 years since the death of Raphael Sanzio, the famous Renaissance painter. The coin was issued on 16/10/2020.

On the Obverse, to the left is the self-portrait of Raphael himself, depicted in his fresco The School of Athens from around 1510, located in the Room of the Signatura of the Vatican Museums.
On the right, in a semicircle, is the inscription RAFFAELLO SANZIO, below the dates 1520 and 2020, along with the detail of the two cherubs from his work The Sistine Madonna.

Below the two angels is the inscription CITTÀ DEL VATICANO, the mint mark R, and the signatures of the authors D. Longo and SP INC. In the outer ring, the 12 stars of Europe are present.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Vatican 2021 Caravaggio was issued on 25/06/2021 and is dedicated to the 450 years since the birth of the great Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio.

On the Obverse of the 2 euro coin, there is a depiction of the famous oil painting Boy with a Basket of Fruit from 1592, which is located in Rome. To the right of the painting is the signature of the engraver Uliana Pernazza (UP. INC). At the top, the inscription CITTÀ DEL VATICANO is engraved, below it CARAVAGGIO and the dates 1571-2021.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Vatican 2023 Perugino coins were minted to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of the painter Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci, known as Perugino, who passed away in 1523. Issued on 20/06/2023

On the Obverse of the coin, there is a portrait of Perugino on the right; on the left, the Baptism of Christ is depicted along with the R of the Mint of Rome. At the top, the inscription CITTÁ DEL VATICANO can be seen. Above Perugino's left shoulder, the signature of the designer Daniela Fusco FUSCO is engraved, while next to the right, the initials of the engraver Annalisa Masini INC A.M. are present. At the bottom of the coin, the inscription PERUGINO and the dates 1523 – 2023 are engraved, surrounded by the 12 stars of the European Union.

The portrait featured on the coin is derived from the fresco “Ornamentation of the Cambio” with the Self-Portrait of Perugino from 1500, measuring 40×30.5 cm. The fresco is located in the Collegio del Cambio in Perugia.
Meanwhile, the Baptism of Christ was taken from the “Cycle of the Life of Jesus” in the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, created in 1482, measuring 335×540 cm.
