It's curious to think that Vatican City is a real state and even more interesting to discover that it is the smallest state in the world!

Hosted, so to speak, by Italy with which it has a close bond and a precise monetary agreement that in the past allowed the simultaneous circulation of the Italian Lira and the Vatican Lira. Furthermore, since 2002 it has adopted the Euro monetary system, even though it is not part of the Eurozone.

1 Euro Cent Vatican – First Series – 2002/2005

The cent of the First series is dedicated to Pope John Paul II and was minted from 2002 to 2005.

On the Obverse, the profile of Pope John is depicted with the classic Papalina looking to the left. Surrounding his portrait are the 12 five-pointed stars separated into two groups by the inscription CITTA' DEL VATICANO.

Below the papal robe is the mint mark R and the year of minting on two lines, while to the right on the edge is the signature of the Sculptor and Engraver GV. UP INC.

1 Euro Cent Vatican – Second Series – 2005

The Cent of the Second Series is temporary and represents the Vacant See of 2005.

On the Obverse, at the top along the edge of the coin are the 12 stars of the Eurozone, in the center is the coat of arms of the Cardinal Camerlengo and below the symbol of the Apostolic Chamber.

The cent of the Third series is dedicated to Pope Ratzinger!
The Obverse depicts the face of Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Ratzinger, not in profile but in three-quarters facing right.

Along the outer edge are the 12 five-pointed stars and in the inner semicircle the inscription CITTA' DEL VATICANO – year of minting. The symbol of the Rome Mint R is engraved between the year and the cheek of the Pope.

1 Euro Cent Vatican – Fourth Series – 2014/2016

The 1 Euro Cent coin of the Vatican from the Fourth Series is dedicated to Pope Francis, elected as the new Pope in 2014.

The Obverse features the unmistakable profile of Pope Francis looking to the left. In front of him starts the semicircular inscription CITTA' DEL VATICANO and to the right the symbol R of the Roman Mint. The 12 five-pointed stars are distributed along the outer edge of the coin.

The signatures of the sculptor and the engraver are positioned one to the right and one to the left above the shoulders of Pope Francis.

5 Euro Cents Vatican City – Third Series – 2006/2013

The 5 Cents of the Vatican Third Series are dedicated to Pope Benedict XVI, the seventh German pontiff of the Catholic Church! Minted from 2006 to 2013 until his resignation.

On the Obverse, the face of the Pope is depicted in a three-quarter pose. The twelve five-pointed stars are engraved along the entire outer edge of the coin.

In the inner semicircle, the inscription in uppercase letters reads: CITTA' DEL VATICANO followed by a dot and the year of minting. The R, indicating the Rome Mint, is between the year of minting and the portrait of Pope Ratzinger.

5 Euro Cents Vatican City – Fourth Series – 2014/2016

The 5 Cents of Vatican City from the Fourth Series were minted between 2014 and 2016 and are dedicated to Pope Francis.

10 Euro Cents Vatican City – First Series – 2002/2005

The First Series of the 10 Euro Cents from Vatican City is dedicated to Pope John Paul II and was minted from 2002 to 2005, the year he passed away. Karol Józef Wojtyła was Pope from 1978 and was the first non-Italian Pope in over 450 years!

On the Obverse of the coin, the inscription CITTA' DEL VATICANO appears at the top along the left edge, followed by 12 five-pointed stars.

In the center is the profile of the Pope facing left, below the bust of Karol Józef Wojtyła is the R mintmark and below that is the year of minting. On the right along the edge is the signature of the designer and engraver GV. UP INC.

10 Euro Cents Vatican City – Second Series – 2005

The Second Series of the 10 Euro Cents from Vatican City features the Vacant See. Minted in 2005.

The 10 Cents of this series have at the center the coat of arms of the Cardinal Camerlengo and the Apostolic Chamber. Surrounding the coat of arms is the inscription: SEDE VACANTE MMV.

In uppercase letters at the bottom appears the inscription CITTA' DEL VATICANO. The circle around the coin is finally closed by the 12 five-pointed stars symbolizing the European Union.

10 Euro Cents Vatican City – Third Series – 2006/2013

The 10 Euro Cents Vatican Third Series were minted in honor of Pope Benedict XVI. In circulation from 2006 until 2013, the date of Pope Ratzinger's resignation.

On the Obverse, the semi-bust of the Pope is depicted with a slight smile. Around the edge are the twelve five-pointed stars. Below the portrait, with a crescent cut, is the inscription: CITTA' DEL VATICANO followed by a dot and the year of minting. The R mintmark of Rome is located between the year of minting and the Pope's face.

Until 2006, the Common Side for all Eurozone countries featured a map with the states separated. From 2008, the Common Side changed to a map without borders between the countries belonging to the Eurozone.

10 Euro Cents Vatican City – Fourth Series – 2014/2016

The 10 Euro Cents from Vatican City of the Fourth Series were minted from 2014 to 2016, in honor of Pope Francis.

On the Obverse, the face of the Pope is depicted. On the left side of the coin, the inscription in a semicircle reads “CITTA' DEL” and on the right “VATICANO”.

On the right between the shoulder and the ear is the R mintmark and the year of minting. The 12 stars are distributed along the outer edge of the coin. The signatures of the engraver and sculptor are above the Pope's shoulders.

20 Euro Cents Vatican City – Second Series – 2005

In 2005, Pope Wojtyła passed away, and the Second Series of the 20 cents of Vatican City was minted during the Vacant See. The 20 Euro Cents feature the coat of arms of the Cardinal Camerlengo and the emblem of the Apostolic Chamber with the inscription: SEDE VACANTE MMV. A. in a semicircle below. In the upper semicircle, the 12 five-pointed stars appear as a symbol of the European Union.

20 Euro Cents Vatican City – Third Series – 2006/2013

The 20 Euro Cents Vatican Third Series is dedicated to Pope Benedict XVI. Minted in 2006 and produced until 2013, the year Pope Ratzinger resigned from his papacy.

On the Obverse, the semi-bust of the Pope is depicted, almost frontal. Around the edge, there are twelve five-pointed stars. In the lower semicircle, the inscription: CITTA' DEL VATICANO is engraved, followed by the year of minting. The R mintmark of the Rome Mint is located between the year of minting and the face of Pope Ratzinger.

The Common side until 2007 features the map of the separated States. However, from 2008 onwards, the coin is minted with the new Common side, which uses the map without borders between the various Eurozone countries.

20 Euro Cents Vatican City – Fourth Series – 2014/2016

The 20 Euro Cents of Vatican belonging to the Fourth Series were minted from 2014 to 2016 and are dedicated to the beloved Pope Francis.

On the Obverse, we find the face of the Pope. To the left of the coin is the inscription in a semicircle “CITTA' DEL” and to the right “VATICANO”. Also on the right, between the shoulder and the ear, is the R mintmark and the year of minting.

The 12 stars are distributed along the entire outer edge of the coin, well spaced apart. The names of the engraver and sculptor appear on both shoulders of the Pope, one on the right and one on the left.

20 Euro Cents Vatican City – Fifth Series – 2017

Here we are at the 20 Euro Cents of the 5th Series of Vatican City, which features the Coat of Arms of Pope Francis in the center. This coin, like the entire fifth series, was minted in 2017.
The inscription: CITTA' DEL VATICANO surrounds the Pope's coat of arms, below is the year of minting, and on the left side of the coin is engraved the R mintmark of the Rome Mint.

In 2005, after the death of Pope Wojtyła, the Second Series of the fifty cents from the Vatican was minted, known as the Sede Vacante.

The 50 Cents coin has at its center the coat of arms of the Cardinal Camerlengo with the emblem of the Apostolic Chamber and around it the inscription: SEDE VACANTE MMV. A.

Below, in the lower semicircle, the inscription CITTA' DEL VATICANO is engraved, while in the upper semicircle, the twelve five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union, are engraved.

50 Cents Euro Vatican – Third Series – 2006/2013

These are the 50 Cents Vatican Third Series, also dedicated to Pope Benedict XVI. Minted from 2006 to 2013, the year of Pope Ratzinger's resignation.

On the Obverse, the face of the Pope is depicted in a semi-bust. Around it are the twelve five-pointed stars, and at the bottom, the inscription: CITTA' DEL VATICANO is engraved. After the inscription, the year of minting is engraved. The symbol of the Rome Mint R is between the year of minting and the portrait of Pope Ratzinger.

Until 2007, the Common Side featured a map of the States separated from each other. From 2008 onwards, the new Common Side is used, with a map without borders between the Eurozone countries.

The 50 cents Vatican 2013 coins have a value of just over 2 and a half euros and a mintage of over 2 million pieces, as do the 50 cents from 2011. More valued is the 50 cents Vatican 2012 coin, which exceeds 4 euros in value. Of this series, the most valuable coin is the one from 2007. The least valuable are the 50 cents from 2010, which are valued just above face value.

50 Cents Euro Vatican – Fourth Series – 2014/2016

The 50 Cents from the Vatican Fourth Series are those dedicated to Pope Francis and minted from 2014 to 2016.
On the Obverse of the coin, the smiling face of the Pope is depicted.

On the left, there is the semicircular inscription “CITTA' DEL” and on the right “VATICANO”. Then, between the Pope Francis's shoulder and ear, there is the R mint mark, and below it, the year of minting.

The 12 stars, symbol of the European Union, are distributed along the outer edge of the coin, spaced apart. The names of the engraver and sculptor are on the shoulders of the Pope, one on the right and one on the left.

The 50 cents Vatican 2016 are worth just over 3 euros and have a high mintage, over 2 million pieces.

50 Cents Euro Vatican – Fifth Series – 2017

The 50 Cents from the 5th Vatican Series feature the Coat of Arms of Pope Francis at the center. Like the entire fifth series, this coin was minted in 2017.

Around the Pope's coat of arms, the inscription CITTA' DEL VATICANO is present, and at the bottom, the year of minting is written. On the left side of the coin, the R mint mark of the Rome Mint is engraved.

The 50 cents Vatican 2018 have an interesting value for a common coin, around 8 euros, as seen in the table below. They are the highest valued among the 50 cents coins of the fifth series. In fact, the 50 cents Vatican 2017 are valued at 4.40 euros with a mintage of over 2 million copies, and the 50 cents from 2019 are worth 4.74 euros.

This is the Third Series of the 1 Euro coin of the Vatican City, dedicated to Pope Benedict XVI. Minted from 2006 until 2013, in fact, in 2013 Pope Ratzinger resigned from his Papacy.

On the nickel part of the Obverse, the face of the Pope is depicted, to his right is the inscription: CITTA' DEL VATICANO. The symbol of the Rome Mint is to the right of the portrait of Pope Ratzinger and the year is below the R. In the brass part of the coin, there are the 12 five-pointed stars.

Until 2007, the Common Side was the one with the map of the States marked by borders. From 2008, the new Common Side with the countries united together came into use.

The 1 Euro coin of the Vatican City from the Fourth Series, also bimetallic, was minted from 2014 to 2016 and dedicated to Pope Francis.

2 Euro Vatican – Second Series – 2005

After the death of Pope Wojtyła in 2005, the Second Series of this 2 Euro Vatican coin was temporarily minted, known as the Vacant See series.

In the center, in the brass part, is the coat of arms of the Cardinal Camerlengo and the emblem of the Apostolic Chamber. Around it, the inscription reads: SEDE VACANTE MMV. Below, in the cupronickel circle, is the inscription: CITTA' DEL VATICANO. At the top, still on the outer ring, the 12 five-pointed stars are imprinted as a symbol of the European Union.

2 Euro Vatican – Third Series – 2006/2013

The Third Series of the 2 Euro coin of the Vatican City is dedicated to Pope Ratzinger. The series was minted from 2006 to 2013, indeed, in 2013, Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation from the Papacy.

On the brass part of the central disc on the Obverse, the face of the Pope is depicted in a bust, to the right of the portrait is engraved the inscription: CITTA' DEL VATICANO. The Common Side until 2007 depicted the map of the States with borders. Then from 2008, the new Common Side came into use, showing the Eurozone countries united together.

2 Euro Vatican – Fourth Series – 2014/2016

The 2 Euro coin of the Vatican City from the Fourth Series was minted from 2014 to 2016. This series is dedicated to the beloved Pope Francis.

On the Obverse of the coin, in the central brass part, is depicted the smiling face of the Pope. To the left of the Pope is the inscription “CITTA' DEL” and to his right is “VATICANO”.

Also on the right side of the coin is the R symbol of the Rome Mint and below the R is the year of minting. Above the shoulders of Pope Francis, one on the right and one on the left, are the names of the engraver and sculptor. Finally, in the outer ring in cupronickel, there are the 12 five-pointed stars in a circle.

2 Euro Vatican – Fifth Series – 2017

2 Euro Vatican of the 5th Series, this coin is minted in 2017 and features in the center of the brass part the Coat of Arms of Pope Francis with the inscription CITTA' DEL VATICANO around it.

At the bottom right is the year of minting and on the left is the symbol of the Rome Mint. In the outer ring of the coin, the cupronickel part, there are 12 stars spaced apart to form a circle.
