2 Euro Commemorative Germany

The first German commemorative 2 euro coin was minted in 2006 and was dedicated to a German state: Schleswig-Holstein, one of the 16 Federal States of Germany. Issued on 3/2/2006.

On the Obverse, in the central brass part, the city gate Holstentor Lübeck is depicted in its majestic late Gothic red brick construction, the only remaining gate of the city walls. Below the inscription SCHLESWIG- HOLSTEIN in two lines, to the right is the engraver's signature Heinz Hoyer and to the left the mintmark A/D/F/G/J.
On the outer part of the coin, the 12 European stars are engraved in a semicircle at the top, separated above by the year 2006 in two blocks of 6 stars each, while in the lower semicircle, the inscription BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND (Federal Republic of Germany) is embossed.

On the Reverse, there is the Common Side in use in 2006 featuring a map of European countries marked by their borders.

Also in 2007, the third 2 euro commemorative coin from Germany was issued, this time a coin initiated by Europe and common to all European countries, with the design being the same for all and only the language of the inscriptions changing. This commemorative coin is dedicated to the Treaties of Rome for their 50th anniversary. The coin was issued on 25/03/2007.

This time, the Obverse features the depiction of the treaties opened and signed in 1957 by all 6 founders. At the top in a semicircle and on two lines are the words ROMISCHE VERTRAGE / 50° JAHRE. In the background, there is the paving of Michelangelo's project located in Rome at the Piazza del Campidoglio, with the inscription EUROPA. At the center bottom is the year 2007, with BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND (Federal Republic of Germany) below it, and to the right, the symbol of the German Mint (A/D/F/G/J).

The outer ring in nickel is characterized by the usual 12 stars, a European symbol, arranged in a circle without interruptions.

The Reverse of this 2 euro coin from Germany features the Common Side which is the same for all countries of the European Union.

One of the first German commemorative coins is this one from 2007, dedicated to a city, namely Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Issued on 02/02/2017.

On the Obverse, within the brass and nickel coin, is the frontal perspective of the Schwerin Castle, a symbol of the city, with the inscription MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN printed below. At the top is the mint mark letter (A/D/F/G/J), and at the bottom center are the two letters HH as the signature of the engraver Heinz Hoyer.
In the outer ring of the coin, made of copper and nickel, there are two blocks of 6 stars each at the top, separated by the minting year 2007, with the inscription BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND in a semicircle below, meaning Federal Republic of Germany.

On the Reverse, the Common Side, is the new map of Europe, extending to the new countries, and without borders between the various states.

The German €2 commemorative coin from 2008 is dedicated to another city, Hamburg, specifically to the St. Michael's Church. It was minted and issued on 01/02/2008.

The Obverse, the National Side, features a depiction of the front view of St. Michael's Church with its majestic bell tower, beneath the inscription HAMBURG, with the initials of the engraver on the right and the mint mark (A/D/F/G/J) at the top.
The outer ring made of copper and nickel displays the year of minting 2008 at the top, flanked by 6+6 stars, symbolizing the Eurozone countries. Additionally, below is the inscription BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND, which means Federal Republic of Germany in German.

The Reverse features the Common Side of the European Union countries.

The 2009 German 2 Euro commemorative coin was issued in honor of the city of Saarbrücken and the Church of St. Louis. Coin dated 06/02/2009.

On the Obverse, one can see the frontal view of the Church of St. Louis against a neutral background, as is typical for all commemorative coins dedicated to German monuments. To the right are the initials of the engraver Friedrich Brenner FB, and below the ground line is the inscription SAARLAND along with the symbol of the German Mint that struck the coin (A/D/F/G/J).
As for the outer part of the commemorative coin, in the lower semicircle, there is the inscription BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND, which translates to the Federal Republic of Germany in German. In the upper semicircle, there are twelve stars, a symbol of Europe, divided into two groups of six and separated by the year 2009 placed at the top center of the coin.

The Common Side on the Reverse is the one depicted on the 2 Euro coins.

In 2009, Germany, like other European countries, issued a commemorative coin for the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Released in Germany on 01/05/2009.

On the Obverse of this 2 euro coin, the primitive figure stands out, united with the euro symbol and inscribed within a rough coin with the initials of the contest winner ΓΣ (Georgios Stamatopoulos)
This design was chosen through an online competition that was, of course, open to all citizens of the European Union countries. On January 31, 2008, it was selected to commemorate the ten years of the Economic and Monetary Union.
At the bottom in a semicircle is the inscription WWU 1999-2009, to the right the mint mark (A/D/F/G/J), and at the top BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND (Federal Republic of Germany).
All around are engraved in a circle the 12 five-pointed stars as seen on the European flag.

On the Reverse, the Common Side is engraved, which is the same for all commemorative coins and the 2 euro coins for all countries of the European Union.

The 2010 issue marks the release of another German commemorative coin, one of the most interesting dedicated to monuments, in this case, two: the Bremen City Hall and the Statue of Orlando. Issued on 29/01/2010.

On the Obverse of this 2 euro coin from Germany, the central brass disc features a prominent depiction on the left of the statue dedicated to the protector of the city of Bremen, Orlando, with the inscription BREMEN to the right and the initials of Bodo Broschat (engraver) at the bottom under the central pedestal. Behind the statue, the majestic Gothic-Renaissance facade of the Bremen City Hall is visible, with the symbol of Germany D at the top left.

In the outer ring of these German commemorative two euros, the stars are arranged in a circle as a European symbol. At the bottom, divided by the central star, the year 20 10 is inscribed, while the mint mark (A/D/F/G/J) is positioned to the right of the upper central star.

The choice for the commemorative coin of 28/01/2011 is for the city of Cologne and its majestic and imposing Cathedral.

The 2012 issue features a Castle, specifically the Neuschwanstein in Füssen, a location in southern Bavaria. It was issued at various mints on 02/03/2012.

On the Obverse, you can recognize the detailed profile of the Neuschwanstein Castle, which includes the surrounding vegetation. Below the inscription BAYERN, to the right is the mintmark (A/D/F/G/J) and to the left are the initials of Erich Ott, the designer's engraver.
This pertains to the central part made of brass and nickel, while the outer part made of copper and nickel features the German symbol D (Deutschland) at the top right and the year 2012 at the bottom center, with a star dividing the numbers 20 and 12.

The Reverse of the coin shows the Common Side, which is the same for all two euro coins, not only in Germany but throughout Europe.

On 01/02/2012, the coin dedicated to the 10 years of Euro is minted.
In the central part on the Obverse of this 2 euro coin from Germany, the globe is depicted alongside the € symbol of the Euro. Surrounding it are symbols such as wind farms, factories, the ECB tower, ships, as well as houses and people. At the top of the coin, before the mintmark, is the semicircular inscription RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE with 2002 – 2012 below. To the right of the year is the mintmark symbol between (A/D/F/G/J).

The 2013 German commemorative €2 coin features the Maulbronn Monastery Baden, slightly different in design compared to previous coins dedicated to architectural monuments. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was issued on 1/02/2013.

On the Obverse, the coin is divided into two parts; on the right, the façade of the Maulbronn Monastery Baden is depicted in perspective, with the mint mark between A/D/F/G/J on the right and the year of issue 2013 at the top. At the bottom, the inscription BADEN-WÜTTEMBERG and the German symbol D appear. On the left side of the coin, an internal architecture is shown with the vaults of the former Cistercian abbey and the Fountain House, along with the engraver's signature Eugen Ruhl (ER) at the bottom.

In 2013, Germany also issued a commemorative coin for the Treaties of Elysée to mark the 50th Anniversary of its signing. The designers are Stefani Lindner, Alina Hoyer, Yves Sampo, and Sneschana Russewa-Hoyer, with the signature located under the portrait of De Gaulle. The issuance date is 22/01/2013.

On the Obverse of this 2 euro coin, the portraits of Konrad Adenauer and Charles De Gaulle are depicted, respectively on the right and left, with their signatures below.
In the central part, a central band starts from the top with the inscription: TRAITÉ DE L' ÉLYSÉE / 50 / ANS / JAHRE / 2013 / ÉLYSÉE- / VERTRAG.
To the right, the letter D is present, representing Deutschland. On the right side, the mint mark (A/D/F/G/J) is also present, specifically below the portrait of Adenauer.

The Common Side features the value and is the same as the 2 euro coins.

In 2014, the Church of St. Michael in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985, is commemorated. Issued on 7/02/2014.

On the Obverse, a perspective view of the Ottonian complex featuring the Cathedral and the Church of St. Michael, the towers, and what was the Benedictine monastery. Below is the inscription NIEDERSACHSEN and the mint mark, which can be A/D/F/G/J depending on the issuing location of the coin.
The year 2014 is engraved at the top left, and the D for Germany (Deutschland) is always on the left but lower. The initials of the engraver Erich Ott (OE) are at the top right.

The Common Side is on the Reverse of the coin, prominently displaying the nominal value of 2 euros.

The third Commemorative issued in 2015 is known as the European Flag, which is the same for all countries in Europe, differing only in the name of the issuing state. The coin was created to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the European Union. Coin dated 11/6/2015.

The Obverse features a design chosen through an online contest open to all European citizens. At the center of the coin, the Flag of Europe waves, surrounded by 12 stars that transform into stylized figures, with the winner's signature Georgios Stamatopoulos on the right.
At the top in a semicircle is the inscription BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND 1985-2015.

The Reverse is the same as the other Commemoratives and features the Common Side of the 2 euro.

Another church, another commemorative coin, this one is dedicated to the St. Paul's Church in Frankfurt and was issued on January 30, 2015.

On the Obverse of this 2 euro Germany coin, we see the St. Paul's Church, a symbol of freedom and democracy for Frankfurt and all of Germany. This oval-shaped building was destroyed and quickly rebuilt after the war, and today it is no longer a place of worship but a venue for important events. Below, the word HESSEN appears, the year of minting 2015 is at the top left, and at the top right is the D for Deutschland.

Also from 2015, specifically on 30/01/2015, the commemorative coin that celebrates the new beginning of Germany German Reunification.

The Obverse of this 2 euro Germany coin features the Brandenburg Gate, which has become a symbol of German unity. Overlaying the gate is a stylized euro symbol with a small D for Germany, and prominently displayed is a group of stylized cheering people, with the signature of the designer BW (Bernd Wendhut) below, to the right.
The mintmark of the German Mint that issued the coin is engraved on the left, which could be A/D/F/G/J.

To the left, in two semicircular lines, is the inscription 25 JAHRE DEUTSCHE / EINHEIT 2015, and to the right, also in concentric lines, the motto of German reunification WIR SIND EIN VOLK, which means “we are one people”.

On the edge of the bimetallic coin are the twelve five-pointed stars, symbol of the European Union.

Reverse: The Common Side is the same as that of other commemorative coins and other 2 euro coins.

In 2016, the commemorative coin is dedicated to a monumental baroque site in Saxony, the Zwinger in Dresden (Dresden Fortress). Issued on 5/02/2016.

The Obverse features a frontal view of the inner courtyard of the Zwinger Gardens, showcasing the prominent jets of the side fountains, the geometry of the architectural complex, and the majestic Crown Gate at the center.
Below is the German mint mark D (Deutschland) and the inscription indicating Saxony: SACHSEN. In the upper right corner is the mint mark, one of A/D/F/G/J, and the engraver's signature Jordi Truxa JT. To the left is the year 2016.

All around, arranged in a circle, are the symbolic stars of Europe (12).

On the Reverse, the usual Common Side as seen on other 2 euro bimetallic coins.

We are in 2017 with the German commemorative coin issued in honor of the Porta Nigra of Trier, a Roman gate that has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986. Released starting from 3/02/2017.

On the Obverse, the Porta Nigra is depicted, the largest Roman gate in the Northern Alps. The name comes from the color of the medieval stone used for its construction. However, both the terms “Roman” and “nigra” are not used by the locals who refer to it simply as “The Gate“.
Below is the inscription RHEINLAND-PFALZ and the D symbol of Germany. To the right is the engraver's signature Frantisek Chochola Ch. To the left is the mint mark expressed with a different letter depending on the place of issue (A/D/F/G/J).

On the part of the coin made of nickel and copper, the outer ring features the twelve stars representing Europe.

The Common Side is the one on the Reverse of the coin, showing the nominal value of 2 euros.

For 2018, the Commemorative coin is dedicated to Berlin and its Palace. The coin was issued on 30/01/2018. The main subject is indeed the Charlottenburg Palace and the grand French Garden in front of it. This is the largest historical monument that survived after World War II in Berlin, a palace with majestic Rococo interiors, such as the famous “Porcelain Room,” room number 95, rich in precious porcelain from Japan and China.

The Obverse of this 2 euro Germany showcases a frontal view of the Charlottenburg Palace in Baroque style, with the entrance framed by the sculptures of two Warriors. In the center is the façade of the Palace with the Dome designed by Von Gothe. Central is also the inscription BERLIN above the mint mark symbol (A/D/F/G/J).
At the top left is the year 2018, and at the bottom is the signature of the designer Bodo Broschat BB, and to the right is the German mark D for Deutschland.

On the copper-nickel ring, there are the stars symbolizing the European Union.

On the Reverse, the Common Side of the two euro is engraved.

Another commemorative coin from 2018, this one is not dedicated to any monument, but rather to a historical figure, the German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, marking 100 years since his birth (1918/2015). Issued on 30/01/2018.

On the Obverse of the bimetallic coin, Helmut Schmidt is depicted with a focused expression and his hand prominently displayed, along with the signature of Bodo Broschat BB.
To the right of the portrait, above the shoulder, are the dates 1918-2015, along with one of the 5 mint marks (A/D/F/G/J). To the left, below the ear, is the symbol D (Deutschland) and the year 2018.
Surrounding the coin at equal distances are the European stars forming a circle, similar to the logo of Europe itself.

On the Reverse, the characteristic Common Side is minted on every 2 euro coin.

The commemorative coin of 2019 was issued in honor of the German Federal Council, the renowned Bundesrat, an important place for Berlin and all of Germany. The building was constructed in 1904 and today houses the Ministry of Finance. Issued on 29/01/2019.

Starting with the Obverse, it features a frontal view of the square in front of the Bundesrat with the fountain and the facade of the building. Below the inscription BUNDESRAT above the letter D, the German mintmark.
At the top, we find the minting year 2019, below the year, to the left, the mint symbol (A/D/F/G/J) and to the right the signature of Michael Otto, the engraver.

Surrounding the central disc made of nickel and brass are the 12 five-pointed stars arranged in a circle, as in the symbol of Europe.

The Reverse is the value side, that is, the Common Side of the 2 euro coins and the commemoratives.

We remain in Berlin because the second German commemorative €2 coin of 2019 is also dedicated to this city, specifically to the fall of the Berlin Wall on its 30th Anniversary. Designed by Joaquin Jimenez, issued on 10/10/2019.
Indeed, on the Obverse of this €2 Germany coin, we see the passage crossed by three doves, symbolizing peace, flying above jubilant hands raised to the sky. To the right is the Brandenburg Gate and to the left a part of the wall with the inscription 30 JAHRE MAUERFALL.
Below the hands of the crowd is the mint year 2019. To the right is Germany's letter D and to the left the identifying letter of the minting location among (A/D/F/G/J).

The Reverse features the Common Side, displaying the nominal value of the coin.

2020 and Brandenburg with the German Commemorative issued for the Sanssouci Palace and the park in front of it. Bimetallic coin issued on 28/01/2020.
(Sans Souci means “without worries”).

On the Obverse, the facade of the Sanssouci Palace in perfect Rococo style with the large fountain and the majestic marble staircase that crosses the park, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990. Built in the mid-1700s, it was the summer residence of Frederick II the Great, King of Prussia. The hill on which it was built is cultivated with vineyards.
Below the fountain, the inscription in uppercase BRANDENBURG and the symbol of Germany D. At the top of the coin, the year 2020 is engraved, to the right is the engraver's signature Jordi Truxa, and to the left is the letter of one of the German mints (A/D/F/G/J).

In the outer circle, the stars symbolize Europe.

The Reverse, as usual, features the Common Side of the other European Commemoratives.

The 2020 will also see the release of the commemorative coin dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the kneeling in Warsaw. This spontaneous gesture was made on December 7, 1970 by Chancellor Willy Brandt during his visit to the Monument to the Heroes of the Ghetto located in Warsaw, Poland. (Willy Brandt was in Poland for the signing of the Warsaw Treaty). Issued on 10/08/2020.

A realistic, almost photographic representation of this painful historical moment was designed by the author “Bodo Broschat”, who won the competition for these 2 Euro Commemorative coins Germany 2020.

On the Obverse of the 2 Euro Germany 2020, or National Side, the depiction of the kneeling is shown in three-quarters view with a seven-branched candelabrum prominently featured, one of the two candelabra present on either side of the “Monument to the Heroes of the Ghetto” which we see represented at the top of the steps on the right. Between the first and second steps, a commemorative flower crown is also depicted with the state symbol D of Germany below it.

At the top left, the inscription in a semicircle 50 JAHRE KNIEFALL starts from the candelabrum, and below the tips of the shoes and the coat, the inscription VON WARSCHAU is engraved. The term Kniefall von Warschau refers to the gesture of humility and penance by Willy Brandt, Chancellor of West Germany, towards the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Also on the left, the mint year 2020 and the mint mark symbol A/D/F/G/J are shown.

Here we have the 2 Euro Commemorative Germany 2021 Magdeburg Cathedral dedicated once again to an architectural work. It is part of the series dedicated to the German Federal States. The Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Catherine and Saint Maurice.

On the Obverse, the Magdeburg Cathedral is depicted, which holds the distinction of being the first Gothic cathedral in Germany. Below the Cathedral, the inscription SACHSEN – ANHALT is engraved with the state symbol D (Germany) underneath.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Germany 2022 Erasmus Program coin is dedicated to 35 years of the Erasmus Program. The coin was issued on 1/07/2022.

On the Obverse, the profile of Desiderius Erasmus is engraved, depicted while writing one of his essays. Above his hand, the signature of the engraver Joaquin Jimenez JJ is inscribed. In the background, a series of bands intertwine to form the number 35, and at the center of the coin is the monogram D of the Federal Republic of Germany. At the bottom right, the inscription 1987-2022 EURASMUS PROGRAMME is engraved, along with the mintmark symbol (A/D/F/G/J) at the bottom.

On the outer part, the 12 stars symbolizing the European Union are distributed.

On the Reverse, the denomination side of the coin is shown, with the value of 2 euros engraved on it.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Germany 2022 Thüringen Wartburg Castle is the sixteenth coin in the Bundesländer series, which features one coin for each federal state. Issued on 25/01/2022

On the Obverse, a depiction of a building, the Wartburg Castle located in Thuringia, Germany, is shown, with the initials of the designer Olaf Stoy OS to its right. At the bottom of the coin, the inscription THÜRINGEN appears, along with the mintmark (A/D/F/G/J) below it. In the upper right corner, the year of minting 2022 is engraved.

These are the €2 Commemorative Germany 2023 Hamburg Elbphilharmonie coins, which were issued on 24/01/2023

On the Obverse of the €2 Hamburg 2023, in perspective behind a view of the Elbe River, there is a depiction of the majestic building known as the Elbphilharmonie, with the lower part consisting of 8 floors that retains the original bricks and the upper part, with 18 floors made of glass. The roof of the building appears non-linear but wavy.
At the bottom of the coin, there is the inscription HAMBURG, to the left the letter D for Germany and the year of issue 2023, below the date is the German mint mark (A/D/F/G/J) and to the right of the Elphi is the signature of the designer Michael Otto.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Germany 2023 Charlemagne have been issued to commemorate the 1275th anniversary of Charlemagne's birth. Issued on 30/03/2023

On the Obverse, centrally, there is the depiction of the seal of the King Charlemagne the KAROLUS, a symbol that is superimposed over the view of the Octagonal Dome of the Palatine Chapel located within the Aachen Cathedral. At the top of the coin, the inscription KARL DER GROßE is engraved, while at the bottom, the dates 748-814 are present; to the left is the year of issue 2023 and to the right the German monogram D and the letter of the respective Mint (A/D/F/G/J). The Reverse features the value side of the coin, showing the value of 2 euros and a map of Europe without borders.

Charlemagne could not write, however, he used his Signum Caroli gloriosissimi regis to autograph and seal documents and imperial acts written for him. This is why his Seal is used to commemorate his birth on this coin. The monogram represents the graphic stylization of the KAROLVS on a cross that refers to the Holy Roman Empire. At the ends of the cross are the letters KRSL and in the center the letters AOV are superimposed.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Germany 2024 Constitution of the St. Paul's Church in Frankfurt “Paulskirche” will be dedicated to the church that hosted the first national and democratic constitution in Germany in 1849. Issue 2024

On the Obverse, at the top of the coin, the inscription PAULSKIRCHNVERFASSUNG 1849 is engraved. In the center of the coin, the St. Paul's Church, the Paulskirche, in Frankfurt is depicted with the delegates of the Constituent National Assembly entering to sign.
In the background, three female allegories Unity, Justice, and Freedom are engraved, with the German tricolor of black, red, and gold. Between them and the St. Paul's Church, the constitutional document and the quill pen represent the signing of the German Constitution of 1849.
At the bottom right, the year of issue 2024 is shown, and on the left, the German symbol D. The signature of the author Bodo Borschat BB is engraved on the facade of the church. The mint mark (A/D/F/G/J) is located to the right of the coin behind the quill pen.

There are two legends regarding the origin of the name King's Chair (Königsstuhl); one is based on a mythological tale that indicates that the one who can reach the top of the cliff is the KING.
The second legend is based on a historical event from 1719 when King Charles XII rested on a chair right at the foot of the cliff after the naval battle against the Danes.

On the Obverse, there is a view of the cliff on the right side of the coin, while at the top left, the inscription MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN 2024 is engraved, with the German monogram D below it. The signature of the designer Michael Otto is at the bottom left, and the mint mark (A/D/F/G/J) is engraved at the top right.
