2 Euro Commemorative Finland

The first Finnish €2 commemorative coin was minted in 2004 and is dedicated to the expansion of Europe.
Minted on 1/06/2004 in Helsinki-Vantaa, Finland (M).

This coin is controversial due to its high value, which many numismatists consider almost unjustified, as they cannot understand the reason for such interest in a commemorative coin that lacks significant features. But let's look at the description and the reasons for such interest.

On the Obverse, you can see the upper part of a pillar with the initials EU, which stands for Europe, from which a sprout spreads and extends into new forms, a clear symbol of expansion with solid foundations. To the right, the letters MM indicate the designer Makinen and the mint director Makkonen.
The year of minting is located at the top of the coin on the circle made of nickel and copper that interrupts the sequence of twelve stars arranged in a circle, as in the symbol of Europe.

The Reverse features the Common Side, which displays the denomination and the map of Europe with the borders engraved between states.

Edge: Along the entire lateral edge, finely milled, is the inscription: SUOMI FINLAND with 3 lion heads.

In 2005, on 25/10/2005, the Finnish UN commemorative €2 coin was issued to celebrate the 50 Years since Finland's Membership in the UN.

On the Obverse, a puzzle forms a dove holding an olive branch in its beak. The dove is a recognized symbol of Peace, determined by the synergy and unity of the individual pieces/countries.
To the right is the year of issue 2005, with the letter K above, the engraver's signature Tapio Kettunen. On the left, it reads FINLAND-UN with the letter M above, symbolizing Raimo Makkonen, Director of the Finnish Mint.
Surrounding the coin are the 12 stars of the European Union arranged in a circle, interrupted only on the right by the dove's wing.

Reverse: The reverse side features the Common Side, which is the same for all €2 coins, both commemorative and non-commemorative, displaying both the nominal value and a map of Europe with the borders of the countries outlined.

Meanwhile, the edge of the coin is finely milled and bears the inscription: YK 1945 – 2005 FN followed by 3 lion heads.

Let's move on to another Finnish coin, this one is from 2006 and was minted in honor of the Centenary of Universal Suffrage, which took place in 1906. Issued on 1/10/2006.

On the Obverse of this 2 euro coin from Finland, two stylized female faces are prominently displayed, positioned vertically opposite each other. A single wavy ribbon separates them.
On the left side, the letter M appears at the top, symbolizing the Mint Director Raimo Makkonen, followed by the date 1.10.1906. On the right side, 20 FI 06, the minting year interrupted by the abbreviation for Finland FI, followed by another M, this time signed by the designer Pertti Makinen.
Surrounding the design are the 12 stars that make up the logo of Europe.

The Reverse is the opposite side of the bimetallic coin, featuring the nominal value of 2 euros.

The edge is finely milled and bears the inscription: SUOMI FINLAND, followed by three stylized lion heads.

In 2007, a coin was issued that is the same for all Euro-using countries, this is the Commemorative dedicated to the Treaties of Rome. The coin was issued on 25/03/2007.

On the Obverse, the plan of the square in front of the Capitoline Hill in Rome is depicted, based on a design by Michelangelo, with the word EUROOPPA inscribed at the top center, below the Treaty Document with the signatures made on March 25, 1957.
Lower down, at the bottom of the coin, on two lines, is the minting year 2007 and SUOMI-FINLAND. At the top, instead, is ROOMAN SOPIMUS 50 V.

All around are engraved the 12 five-pointed stars arranged in a circle, symbol of the European Union, with the mark of the Finnish Mint located between two stars on the left.

The Common Side, or the so-called value side, is the reverse of the coin showing the value of 2 euros and the new map of European countries all united without borders between them.

The Edge: Incused on the side of the coin is the inscription ROMFÖRDRAGET – 50 ÅR – EUROPA

Another €2 commemorative coin from Finland minted in 2007 is dedicated to the Independence of Finland. This commemorative coin was issued on 1/01/2007 to mark the 90th anniversary of Finnish independence declared on December 6, 1917, and recognized on January 4, 1918.

On the Obverse, waves of the sea are depicted, crossed by a boat steered by 9 figures with 9 long oars. At the top of the coin is the minting year 2007, while below is the date 1917. To the right is the identifying mark of Finland FI, and to the left is the symbol of the Cornucopia with coins, representing the Finnish Mint.
Surrounding it is the logo of the European Union with its twelve 5-pointed stars representing all European States.

On the Reverse, or value side, the Common Side is depicted as with all commemorative and €2 coins. In incuse along the finely milled edge is inscribed the text: SUOMI FINLAND followed by 3 lion heads.

The Finnish commemorative €2 coin from 2008 was issued to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Human Rights. It was minted and released on 24/10/2008.

On the Obverse of this €2 Finnish coin, there is a large Heart with the figure of a man with a hand on his chest. At the top is the year 2008, and below the heart is an inscription that resembles an engraving on a rock, reading: HUMAN RIGHT’S. Also at the bottom of the coin, to the right is the mint mark (the Cornucopia), to the left is the identifying code for Finland FI, and in the center is the K as the signature of the engraver Tapio Kettunen.

Around the central part, 12 five-pointed stars are arranged in a circle, symbolizing European countries.

On the Reverse, the Common Side is depicted with the nominal value, as with all other €2 coins.

Edge: Along the finely milled edge, the words SUOMI FINLAND are incused, followed by three lion heads.

To celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Finnish Autonomy, in 2009, this commemorative coin was issued, featuring the design from the one hundred euro coin, which depicts the façade of the Porvoo Cathedral. Issued on 23/10/2009.
It references the first Diet of Finland that took place at the end of the Finnish War, from March 25 to July 19, 1809, in the Porvoo Cathedral.

On the Obverse, we see the upper and frontal part of the Porvoo Cathedral in the center, with the date 1809 engraved above the spire, and to the right, the issuance date 2009. On the left, stacked one above the other, is the Cornucopia as a symbol of the Mint and the initials FI referring to Finland.
The European symbol is represented by the 12 stars arranged in a circle above the outer ring of the coin.

Also from 2009, specifically from 15/01/2009, a commemorative coin issued in all Eurozone countries, dedicated to the 10th Anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union known as EMU.

The Obverse of this 2 euro Finland coin features a stylized prehistoric figure merged with the euro symbol (€) and the signature of the designer Georgios Stamatopoulos at the bottom (ΓΣ), with the inscription SUOMI FINLAND at the top. The lower part reads EMU 1999 – 2009.
On the copper-nickel part of the coin, the twelve stars symbolizing the European Union are engraved.

On the Reverse, we find the Common Side, or value side, displaying the nominal value.

The edge of the coin is finely milled and bears the inscription TALOUS – JA RAHALIITTO EMU followed by three lion heads.

The commemorative coin of 2010 was issued for the 150th Anniversary of the Finnish Coin. On April 4, 1860, thanks to Tsar Alexander II of Russia, a decree was issued allowing Finland to issue banknotes and coins in Markka. Thus, the first Finnish Mint was established in Helsinki.
This commemorative coin was presented on 15/11/2010.

On the Obverse, on the left side, is engraved a stylized design of a Lion holding a knife, a symbol present in the Finnish Coat of Arms, along with the year of minting 2010.
To the right, in the moon, there is a sequence of numbers with varying sizes and partially overlapping or cut (0 1 2 5 1 5 0), representing the unit value of the Finnish coin. The heraldic Lion is also present, inscribed in a circle, a new symbol of the Mint.

At the bottom, the issuing country code FI is indicated, and along the outer edge, the nickel part features 12 five-pointed stars symbolizing European countries.

Along the entire edge of the bimetallic coin, the inscription: SUOMI FINLAND is engraved in incuse along with three Lion heads.

For the 200th Anniversary of the Bank of Finland, in 2011, a commemorative coin was issued depicting the national symbol of the Whooper Swan, also known as the Singing Swan. The Laulujoutsen is a large white swan with a yellow bill that has a black tip and dark webbed feet. Issued on 17/10/2011.

Specifically, on the Obverse, the migratory flight of a Whooper Swan is evident, which, as mentioned, is the national bird of Finland, as well as a protected species and a Finnish symbol of fidelity. To the right is the date 1811, the year the Suomen Pankki (Bank of Finland) was founded in Turku by Tsar Alexander I of Russia.
At the bottom center is the Mint symbol with the heraldic lion inside a circle, and to the left is the issuing state code for Finland, FI. To the left, at 9 o'clock, is the year 2011. On the body of the swan, at the top right, is engraved the V signature of the engraver Hannu Veijalainen.
Surrounding the coin are the classic 12 five-pointed stars arranged in a circle, representing the European States.

In 2012, the Finnish Mint issued a female commemorative coin for the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Helene Schjerfbeck, a renowned Finnish painter famous for her deep-looking self-portraits that reveal her state of mind and fear of death. An undisputed artist born in Helsinki on July 10, 1862, and passed away on January 23, 1946. Issued on 5/10/2012.

The Obverse of this 2 euro Finland coin features a stylization of a Self-Portrait by Helene Schjerfbeck from 1937, with the two dates 1862-1946 on the right alongside the mint mark, which is the heraldic lion enclosed in a circle. On the left is the artist's name HELENE SCHJERFBECK and the Finnish identifying mark FI.
The engraver's signature is on the left T Erja Tielinen beneath the brushstroke color spots.

Surrounding the design are the 12 stars representing the emblem of Europe.

The Common Side on the Reverse of the coin displays the nominal value of the 2 euro coin.

Another Commemorative coin from 2012 is for the 10 Years of the Economic and Monetary Union. This bimetallic coin was issued in all European Union countries and in Finland on 12/01/2012.

The design on the Obverse of this common Commemorative coin for all European countries features various elements surrounding the Euro symbol €, which transforms into a globe. Surrounding it are houses, buildings, and human figures representing the importance of the Euro in citizens' lives, a ship symbolizing trade, a factory representing industry, and wind turbines symbolizing energy.

At the top of the coin, we find the inscription SUOMI FINLAND and at the bottom, the dates 2002 – 2012.

Around the nickel ring, there are 12 five-pointed stars, which symbolize the European States.

On the Reverse, the coin features the Common Side with the nominal value of 2 Euro.

The edge is finely milled and is characterized by an incuse engraving of three lion heads and the inscription SUOMI FINLAND.

The 2013 coin features a male commemorative coin dedicated to the writer and Nobel Prize winner for literature, Frans Eemil Sillanpää, marking the 125th anniversary of his birth. The coin was issued on 4/11/2013.

On the Obverse of the commemorative coin is a nearly photographic portrait of Frans Eemil Sillanpää, placed under the inscription F.E. SILLAMPAA, with the year 2013 alongside it. To the left is the date 1888, the year of his birth (September 16, 1888), and to the right is 1964, the year of his death (June 3, 1964).
At the bottom, beside the writer's long beard, is the symbol of the Helsinki Mint, a circle containing the heraldic lion, followed by the identifying letters of Finland FI.

Also from 2013 are the two commemorative euros dedicated to the Parliament. This coin was issued on 4/09/2013 for the 150th Anniversary of the Finnish Parliament.

The Obverse of these 2 euros from Finland features the date 1863 in an ornamental font, with the 6 transforming from seed to sprout. A semicircular inscription reads S U O M I F I N L A N D 2013, accompanied by the symbol of the Helsinki Mint, the heraldic lion inside a circle, positioned between Suomi and Finland.

Surrounding it are the 12 stars of the European Union evenly distributed.

Here is another commemorative coin dedicated to a female figure, this time for a renowned Finnish writer, painter, and illustrator, Tove Marika Jansson. The coin was issued on 16/06/2014 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of her birth on 9/08/1914.

Her mother was an illustrator and her father a sculptor, and she is also known for being the mother of the characters from the Moomin series, Finnish children's books translated into over thirty languages and created in 1946.

The Obverse features a stylized version of Tove Marika Jansson's self-portrait painted in oil in 1975. Below the face is her signature and the dates 1914-2001, marking her birth and death. On the right side, the minting year 2014 and the mint's symbol, the heraldic lion in a circle, are displayed. On the left, the abbreviation FI identifies Finland.

In 2014, the commemorative Ilmari Tapiovaara was issued, also dedicated to an artist, designer, and interior architect who worked as an assistant to Le Corbusier and with Alvar Aalto. He is known for the Domus Chairs series from 1946, the Polar Cutlery from 1963, and his taste for industrial furniture.

On the Obverse of the 2 euro coin from Finland, there is a depiction of a Domus Series chair from 1946, the stackable chair made of birch wood. Below the chair is the minting year 2014, the abbreviation for Finland FI, and the Finnish Mint's heraldic lion mark.

In the year 2015, a commemorative coin was issued to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Jean Sibelius, violinist and composer, and a symbol of Finnish music. Commemorative date: 18/02/2015.

The Obverse features a view of a starry sky with the crowns of two trees, as if we were lying down observing the sky. To the right is the Finnish mark FI and the mint mark of Vantaa (heraldic lion within a circle). To the left is the year 2015 and the name of the musician JEAN SIBELIUS written in an arc.
Surrounding it are stars, distributed in a circle, symbolizing the countries of Europe.

Another commemorative coin from 2015 is dedicated to Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela, who painted The Swan of Tuonela for the historic epic poem of Finland, Kalevala. It was issued on 22/10/2015.

On the Obverse of this 2 euro Finland coin, the Swan, a Finnish symbol, is depicted on the water with the rippling lines taken from his artwork. Below the inscription AKSELI GALLÉN KALLELA, interrupted only by the palette of Akseli Gallen-Kallela, are engraved the dates 1865 and 2015, marking the year of his birth and the year of minting. In 2015, a commemorative coin is minted in all European countries to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the European Flag. The coin was issued in Finland on 6/08/2015.

The Obverse features the Flag of Europe with its logo at the center, which consists of 12 stars arranged in a circle. These stars transform into stylized human figures representing the European countries. The signature of the designer Georgios Stamatopoulos GS is located at the bottom right under the prominent figure, and above its head is the symbol of the Finnish Mint (Circle + Lion).

On the right side of the coin, there is a semicircular inscription SUOMI FINLAND 1985 – 2015.
The ring around it repeats the logo of Europe with its stars in a circle.

For 2016, Finland chose to commemorate Georg Henrik von Wright, a Finnish philosopher born on June 14, 1916, in Helsinki and passed away in 2003, two days after his birthday. Coin dated 17/10/2016

The Obverse of this 2 euro Finland coin features an oak branch on the left and an ancient Doric column on the right. Starting from the left, below the oak branch, is the inscription GEORG HENRIK VON WRIGHT, while at the top is the abbreviation FI for the issuing country, the Mint's symbol (the heraldic lion drawn within a circle), and the year 2016, which is engraved above the Doric column.
Surrounding the brass and nickel part is the nickel and copper crown, which is engraved with the European symbol consisting of 12 five-pointed stars arranged in a circle.

The Reverse of the coin depicts the Common Side with the nominal value of the Commemorative.

The Edge, like other coins, is finely reeded and bears the inscription SUOMI FINLAND, along with the three lion heads.

The 2016 was meant to be the year of writers in Finland, as the second Commemorative coin is also dedicated to one of them, namely Eino Leino, a well-known poet, also known to some by the name Armas Einar Leopold Lönnbohm. Born in 1878 and died in 1926. This coin was issued on 25/04/2016, marking 90 years since his death.

On the Obverse, we see a flame with to the left the profile, recognizable by the silhouette of the mustache, of Eino Leino himself. The flame appears to emerge from a tool used to arrange the logs in the fireplace, a poker with the year 2016 below and the Poet's signature in italics. To the left, there are the two letters of Finland FI and the circle containing the lion, the symbol of the Mint. Surrounding it is the European mark with a circle made of stars, 12 equidistant stars.

The Common Side is instead on the Reverse of the coin with the nominal value of 2 Euro.

On the Edge, the words SUOMI FINLAND can be read along with the heads of three lions, and it is reeded.

The 2017 commemorative coin is dedicated to Finnish Nature, featuring a beautiful design created from the combination of two photographs by Kari Auvinen. The photographs were selected through a Finnish photography competition specifically for this coin, with the image of the raven highlighting Finland's spirit of adaptation, a distinctive characteristic of the bird.

On the Obverse, we see the bimetallic coin perfectly centered, with the full moon viewed from Harmaja, a Finnish island, depicted with almost photographic details. In the foreground, a tree with bare branches and a raven perched on a branch to the right, facing left. At the bottom, beneath the moon, the year of issue 2017, at 9 o'clock the identifying mark of Finland FI, and to the right, behind the raven's tail, the lion within the circle, emblem of the Finnish Mint.

On the Reverse, as usual, the Common Side with the nominal value of the commemorative coin engraved.

The inscription SUOMI FINLAND is engraved on the edge of the coin, along with the 3 lion heads.

For the 100 Years of Independence of Finland, also in 2017, this commemorative coin made of dots is minted. Issued on 1/6/2017.

On the Obverse of these 2 euro Finland coins, as previously mentioned, a homogeneous surface made of dots of various sizes fits together like pieces of a mosaic, in which a silhouette can be glimpsed and the cartographic outline of Finland is recognized. On the left, the inscription in vertical and two lines reads SUOMI 1917 / FINLAND 2017. On the right, one above the other, the heraldic lion inscribed within a circle and the abbreviation for Finland FI.

In 2018, this commemorative coin was minted, which can be defined as naturalistic, as it pays tribute to the Koli National Park. Commemorative issued on 28/05/2018.

Let's explore the Obverse of the commemorative coin, which shows the panoramic view from above Koli National Park, a national park located on a hill 347 meters high above Lake Pielinen. Both the vegetation and the lake are visible, with the year 2018 at the bottom center, and to the right at 3 o'clock is the Finnish Mint symbol, a circle containing the heraldic lion. To the left, below the horizon line, is the identifying mark of the issuing State: FI.

In the circle made of nickel and copper, the silvered part features the 12 stars symbolizing European countries, arranged in a circular pattern.

The second coin of 2018 also pays tribute to an environmental but also cultural theme, this time to Sauna Culture. Coin dated 22/10/2018

Obverse: The central circle of the coin features a typical Finnish landscape with a smoking stone sauna and all the surrounding vegetation.
Not everyone knows that the practice of sauna originated in Finland in 1100 A.D. Below at 6 o'clock is the year 2018, at the top right the lion inscribed within a circle (Mint Mark), to the left the abbreviation FI, referring to Finland.
On the outer edge in nickel, stars representing European countries are arranged in a circle, similar to the logo of Europe.

Reverse: Side with the nominal value of 2 euros, also known as Common Side.

To celebrate the 100 Years of the Finnish Constitution, this commemorative coin was issued in 2019.

On the Obverse, the three interlocking circles represent the three political pillars: the Executive, Judiciary, and Legislative powers. At the bottom is the mint's emblem, a lion within a circle, and the abbreviation FI for Finland. To the left is the year of minting, 2019.

Here we are in 2020 with the commemorative coin dedicated to the 100 years of the University of Turku. Issued on 20/08/2020.

On the Obverse, there is an abstract representation of the cooperation between society and universities. The design features intersecting lines that create points of connection. At the top is the year of issue 2020, and at the bottom right is the state mark of Finland FI with the mint symbol above: a circle with the Heraldic Lion.

Within the circle of the coin, there are the 12 European stars.

In 2020, the 2 Euro Commemorative coin for Finland is minted in honor of the writer Väinö Linna on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Issued on 16/11/2020.

The Obverse features a portrait of Väinö Linna, who worked at the Finlayson factory, thus in the background are depicted threads representing the plots in his books. Below the portrait is engraved the year 2020, the symbol of Finland FI, and the circle with the Heraldic Lion as a mint mark.

On the outer part of the coin, the European stars are engraved in a circle.

The Reverse is, as usual, the Common Side found on all 2 euro coins.

On the Edge, like all other Finnish coins, there is a fine reeding and the inscription SUONI FINLAND along with three lion heads.

Two Euro Commemorative Finland 2021, dedicated to Democracy and the freedom of Journalism. Coin issued on 14/04/2021.

On the Obverse, there is a stylized representation of some human figures, outlined by a ribbon. On the left, the word JOURNALISMI, and on the right JOURNALISTIK. At the bottom center, there is an engraving of the circle with the Heraldic Lion (symbol of the Mint), 2020 (the year of issue), and FI (Mark of Finland).

Surrounding it, on the nickel part, are the usual 12 stars representing the countries of the European Union. The Reverse features the Value Side, also known as the Common Side.

The Edge is finely milled and bears the inscription SUOMI FINLAND with 3 lion heads.

Also from 2021, the Commemorative Finland coins dedicated to the 100 years of the Åland Islands. The coin was issued on 13/08/2021.

On the Obverse, there is a non-abstract depiction, but rather a marine view of the Åland Islands archipelago. The perspective is subjective, as if the viewer is on a boat, with the bow visible, following a course with a compass held in hand.

At the top of the coin, in a semicircle, is the inscription ÅLANDS SJÄLVSTYRELSE 100 ÅR and at the bottom AHVENANMAAN ITSEHALLINTO 100 VUOTTA.

The commemorative coin 2 Euro Commemorative Finland 2022 Erasmus Program is dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus Program (European Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students). Issued in all countries of the EUROZONE. Release date 1/07/2022

The “Erasmus Program” was indeed born in 1987 from the intuition of educator Sofia Corradi and the collaboration with Domenico Lenarduzzi. Together they managed to create the right conditions to launch the ambitious “Student Exchange Project across Europe“. The name, ERASMUS, is dedicated to Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam, who was a Humanist, Philosopher, and Theologian, known as the author of The Praise of Folly.

On the Obverse of the coin, there is a depiction, facing left, of the profile of Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam as he writes his essay The Praise of Folly. Above his right hand is the signature of the engraver Joaquin Jimenez JJ. In the background, there are a series of intertwined bands forming the number 35, and in the center, the national monogram FI is engraved. At the bottom of the coin, on the right, the inscription 1987-2022 EURASMUS OHJELMA PROGRAMMET is engraved along with the circle containing the Heraldic Lion, the symbol of the Finnish Mint.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Finland 2022 Climate Research coins were minted in Finland to raise awareness about the ongoing Climate Change and its consequences for our Planet. The coin was issued on 30/10/2022.

The lichen depicted on the Obverse, known as “beard of the woods,” grows on trees, forming an intricate network of branched filaments. Below the lichen, the year of minting 2022 is engraved, followed by the national code FI. At the top, the Circle contains the Heraldic Lion as a mint symbol.
