2 Euro Commemorative Spain

The very first €2 commemorative coin from Spain was minted in 2005 in honor of Don Quixote, the famous literary character known for his futile fight against windmills. Issued on 30/06/2005

On the Obverse of the €2 coin from Spain 2005, we find a faithful representation of Don Quixote wielding a lance, with windmills in the background.

To the left is the inscription ESPAÑA, with the crowned M, the symbol of the Mint, directly below it.
On the outer edge, at the bottom, the year of minting is present, separated by one of the 12 stars. As with all Euro coins, the stars symbolize the European States.

The second 2 Euro Commemorative coin from Spain was minted in 2007 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome. Issued on 26/03/2007.

On the National Side, the signed treaty by the founding States is depicted at the center, with the word Europe above and a detail of the floor designed by Michelangelo from the Piazza del Campidoglio where the treaties were signed in the background.
At the bottom, we can see the year of minting and the inscription ESPAÑA, while above in an arch composition on two lines is the text TRATADO DE ROMA, 50 ANOS.
On the outer edge, there are twelve five-pointed stars as the European emblem.

As for the Reverse, it is interesting to note that this is the first coin minted by the Madrid Mint that features the New Common Side, with the countries of Europe united without distances and borders.

Let’s move on to another coin that is quite significant in European history. Specifically, the commemorative 2 Euro coin from Spain was minted in 2009 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union, commonly referred to as EMU. Issued on 2/03/2009.

On the Obverse of the 2 Euro coin from Spain 2009, we can indeed see a primitive-style figure next to the Euro, symbolically indicating the evolution of the economy leading to the establishment of the single currency. Above, we find the inscription ESPAÑA while to the left is the crowned M, the symbol of the Madrid Mint.
At the bottom in an arch, we see the inscription UEM 1999-2009.
Surrounding it, we can observe the usual 12 five-pointed stars representing the European States.

The next €2 Commemorative coin from Spain was minted in 2010 and is dedicated to a historical monument. Specifically, we are talking about the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, built between the 8th and 10th centuries. The Mosque is one of the greatest examples of Islamic architecture in Europe, although over the years it has undergone numerous transformations until it was officially consecrated as a Christian Cathedral. Issue date 3/03/2010.

On the Obverse, we can see the representation of one of the most characteristic features of the Cathedral, namely the famous “Forest of Columns” made up of columns and arches. To the left, we find the crowned M symbolizing the Madrid Mint, while at the bottom is the inscription ESPAÑA 2010.
Surrounding it are the usual 12 five-pointed stars representing the European States.

The Common Side is identical to the Reverse of all other €2 coins.

Another Spanish €2 commemorative coin minted in 2011 that honors a historical monument. This time we are talking about the Court of the Lions of the Alhambra located in Granada. Issued on 21/02/2011.

On the Obverse, we can immediately notice a representation of the structure in all its magnificence. At the bottom, we can see the arching inscription ESPAÑA 2011 while at the top is the crowned M, which is none other than the symbol of the Madrid Mint.
Surrounding it are the usual twelve five-pointed stars representing the European States.

We return to a €2 commemorative coin from Spain that represents an important piece of European history. Specifically, this coin was minted in 2012 to celebrate the 10 years since the introduction of Euro banknotes and coins. Issued on 2/01/2012.

It is important to highlight that the subject for this coin was chosen by European citizens through an online survey. The design of the National Side is, in short, a representation of the importance of the Euro. In particular, around the Euro symbol are depicted people (symbolizing the population), a ship (symbolizing trade), a factory (symbolizing industry), and wind turbines (representing energy).

Above the design, we find the inscription ESPAÑA, while below are the dates 2002 – 2012. As always, the outer edge features the five-pointed stars symbolizing the European States.

On the Reverse, we find the same face as the other €2 coins, the Common Side.

Another coin dedicated to a historical monument. Specifically, this €2 Commemorative coin from Spain was minted in 2012 to celebrate the magnificent Cathedral of Burgos. It is a Gothic cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary and famous for its unique architecture and size. Issued on 6/02/2012.

Here we are in 2013 with a new commemorative bimetallic coin. The coin in question was minted in 2013 in honor of the Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial, which was commissioned by Philip II as a residence and pantheon for the King of Spain. In 1984, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Issued on 1/03/2013.

On the Obverse, we can see the representation of the Monastery, while at the top there is the arch inscription ESPAÑA. Moving down to the right, we can also find the year of minting and the crowned M, the symbol of the Madrid Mint. Surrounding it, as usual, are the 12 five-pointed stars, arranged in a circle, representing the European countries.

Another €2 Commemorative coin from Spain minted in 2014 is dedicated to the change of King. Issued on 10/12/2014.

Specifically, on the Obverse, we can see the portraits of the two monarchs King Felipe VI, who succeeded the former King Juan Carlos I.
At the bottom, there is the inscription ESPAÑA – 2014, while to the right is the crowned M, which represents the symbol of the Madrid Mint.
Surrounding the coin are the classic 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

The next €2 Commemorative coin from Spain was minted in 2014 to commemorate the world-famous Park Güell in Barcelona, designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. Issued on 17/03/2014.

On the Obverse of the €2 coin Spain 2014, we can see the representation of various elements from the Park Güell, such as the lizard, a sculpture present in the park, and in the background, a detail of one of the entrance pavilions. At the top, the inscriptions ESPAÑA and PARK GÜELL — GAUDÍ are arched.
To the left, the year of minting is placed, while to the right is the crowned M, the symbol of the Madrid Mint.
In the outer circle, the coin features, as usual, the 12 five-pointed stars evenly distributed, which symbolize Europe.

The next coin is another that highlights important events for Europe. In particular, this €2 coin from Spain minted in 2015 commemorates the 30th anniversary of the European Flag. Issued on 15/12/2015.

On the Obverse of the €2 Spain 2015 coin, we can see, perfectly centered, the European Flag surrounded by stylized human figures symbolizing the union of various States for a common goal and intent. Not by chance, the stylized figures are exactly 12, representing the States.
At the top right, we can see the inscription ESPAÑA followed by the dates 1995 – 2015 and the symbol of the Madrid Mint.
Around the outer edge, as usual, are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the States of Europe.

The €2 commemorative coins from Spain impress with the significant value of the subjects represented, and this coin in particular does not disappoint expectations. Specifically, we are talking about a coin minted in 2015 and dedicated to the Altamira Cave, a cave near Santillana del Mar in Cantabria (near Santander) where Upper Paleolithic cave paintings were discovered. Issued on 1/02/2015.

The Obverse of the coin indeed shows one of the representations of the cave, namely a large bison. At the top, the word ESPAÑA is present, while at the bottom is the year of issue. On the right, we can observe the crowned M, which represents the symbol of the Madrid Mint.

The next coin was minted in 2016 and is dedicated to the Aqueduct of Segovia. This is particularly a Roman-era aqueduct and represents one of the major examples of imperial architecture found on the Iberian Peninsula.

In 1985, it was included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Issued on 29/02/2016.

On the Obverse, we can see a representation of a part of the Aqueduct. At the top, in a circular fashion, the word ESPAÑA is present, followed immediately below by the year of issue. On the right, there is a crowned M, which is the symbol of the Madrid Mint.
Surrounding the design are the usual 12 five-pointed stars, symbolizing the countries of the European Union.

We continue our journey into Spanish commemorative numismatics with this wonderful coin minted in 2017 to commemorate the Church of Santa Maria del Naranco. Issued on 6/02/2017.

This splendid church located in Oviedo was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1985.

On the Obverse, there is indeed a representation of the church's façade. At the top is the inscription ESPAÑA, while slightly to the right is the year of issue. To the left of the church façade is the crowned M, the symbol of the Madrid Mint.
Surrounding the design are the usual 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

This specific €2 commemorative coin from Spain was minted in 2018 to celebrate the 50th Birthday of King Felipe VI. Issued on 7/02/2018.

On the Obverse, we can indeed see the portrait of Felipe VI perfectly centered. Starting from the left, we find the inscription ESPAÑA in a semicircle, the year of issue, and the inscription 50 ANIVERSARIO DE S.M. FELIPE VI. In the upper right corner is the symbol of the Madrid Mint.
Surrounding this design, as always, are the five-pointed stars symbolizing European countries.

The Common Side represents the Reverse of the €2 coin.

This is a coin of both archaeological and religious significance. Specifically, we are talking about the €2 commemorative coin from Spain minted in 2018 in honor of Santiago de Compostela and the Cathedral erected in its name. Issued on 7/02/2018.

It is important to note that Santiago de Compostela in Italian is Giacomo il Maggiore, a disciple of Jesus, whose remains are believed to be located in the city of the same name. This has also inspired the famous pilgrimage route that thousands of people embark on each year.

On the Obverse, we can observe the representation of the sculpture of Santiago placed at the center of the Puerta Santa of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. To the left in a semicircle, we find the inscription ESPAÑA, while just below is the year of issue, with the symbol of the Madrid Mint underneath. Surrounding this are the 12 five-pointed stars, arranged along the outer crown of the coin; the stars are the recognized symbol of Europe.

We have reached the penultimate coin in this interesting collection dedicated to the 2 Euro commemorative coins of Spain. In particular, this last Spanish commemorative 2 Euro coin was minted in 2019 to commemorate the City of Ávila and its historic center with the imposing walls that characterize it. Issue date 20/02/2019

On the Obverse, we can indeed see a detail of the walls. At the top in an arch is the inscription ESPAÑA, followed below by the year of minting and to the right by the crowned M, the symbol of the Madrid Mint. The National Side of the Commemorative 2020 is dedicated to Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon, specifically to the Torre El Salvador de Teruel. This tower is part of a wonderful complex of 14th-century buildings, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986. Issued on 10/06/2020

On the Obverse of the 2 euro Spain 2020 coin, there is a frontal view of the Torre El Salvador de Teruel, with the mintmark, the crowned M, on the right, and the year of minting 2020 below. On the left, in vertical uppercase letters, is the inscription ESPAÑA, and in an arc at the top, the inscription ARQUITECTURA MUDÉJAR DE ARAGÓN appears.
In the outer crown of the bimetallic coin, the nickel and copper part, the 12 stars, symbol of Europe, are evenly engraved in a circle.

On the Reverse, as with other 2 euro coins, is the Common Side.

The €2 commemorative coin Spain 2021 is dedicated to the Historic Center of Toledo. Issued on 03/10/2021

On the Obverse, the Puerta del Sol is depicted, a historic building from the 14th century located in the historic center of Toledo. In the upper right, the mint mark M with a crown is engraved. To the left behind the door, there is a mural, a masterpiece of Hispano-Jewish art in Mudejar style, created in the synagogue of Samuel Levi (Sinagoga del Tránsito). At the bottom, the inscription ESPAÑA is shown with the year 2021 below it.

On the outer ring of the coin, there are 12 European stars. On the Reverse, there is the Common Side, or value side, which is the same for all €2 commemorative coins.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Spain 2022 Garajonay National Park is dedicated to the rock formation on the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands, the Roque de Agando. Issued on 23/03/2022.

On the obverse, the Roque de Agando is depicted as seen from the laurel forest of the Garajonay National Park in the foreground. At the top is the mint mark (M with a crown) above the inscription ESPAÑA 2022. In the outer ring of the coin, the stars of the European Union are arranged in a circle.

The 2 Euro Spain 2022 First Voyage Around the World Juan Sebastián Elcano is dedicated to the 500 years since the first circumnavigation of the Earth carried out by Juan Sebastián Elcano. Issued on 23/03/2022.

On the Obverse, the portrait of Juan Sebastián Elcano is depicted, with the dates 1519 1522 on the right and the symbol of the Spanish mint, the M with a crown, on the left. In the background, there is a stylization of the Globe, with the inscription ESPAÑA 2022 on the right. At the bottom of the coin, the inscription JUAN SEBASTIÁN ELCANO” “PRIMUM CIRCUMDEDISTI ME is engraved.

On the outer rim of the coin, the twelve five-pointed stars of Europe are engraved.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Spain 2022 Erasmus Program coins were minted in 2022 across all Eurozone countries and are dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus Program (European Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students). Issued on 1/7/2022

The Erasmus Program was established in 1987 through the insight of educator Sofia Corradi and the collaboration of Domenico Lenarduzzi. Together, they managed to create the right conditions to launch the ambitious student exchange project across Europe. The name chosen for the project is derived from Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam, a Humanist, Philosopher, and Theologian, as well as the author of The Praise of Folly.

On the Obverse, there is a depiction of Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam focused on writing his essay, with the signature of the engraver Joaquin Jimenez JJ above. In the background, a series of bands intertwine to form the number 35. At the bottom right, the inscription 1987-2022 EURASMUS PROGRAMME ESPAÑA is engraved, and at the bottom center is the symbol of the Spanish Mint M with the crown.

On the outer part of the coin, the 12 stars symbolizing the European Union are distributed.

On the Reverse, there is the denomination side of the coin, engraved with the value of 2 euros and the new map of Europe.

The €2 Commemorative Coin Spain 2023 Historic Center of Cáceres is dedicated to Cáceres, which is the largest municipality in Spain. This is the 14^th issue dedicated to the World Heritage Sites in Spain. Issued on 28/03/2023

The Obverse features a view of the Historic Center of Cáceres with the Plaza Mayor, the Torre de Bujaco, and the Ermita de la Paz. At the top center, the inscription reads ESPAÑA 2023, while at the bottom, the name of the city CÁCERES is engraved. In the top right corner, there is the symbol of the Spanish mint, which is the M with a crown.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Spain 2023 Presidency of the European Union has been issued to commemorate Spain's presidency of the European Union. Issued on 3/07/2023.

On the Obverse of the coin, the Logo of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union UE23 is engraved. Around the coin, along the perimeter, the inscription ESPAÑA 2023 – PRESIDENCIA ESPANOLA appears at the top, while at the bottom is CONSEJO DE LA UNION EUROPEA and the M with the crown, symbol of the Spanish mint. Surrounding it are the 12 stars of the European Union in a circle.

The Reverse, on the other hand, is the common side of all 2 EURO coins.

The 2 Euro Spain 2024 Alcázar Cathedral and Archive of the Indies will be dedicated to the Alcázar Cathedral, the royal palace, and the Archive of the Indies in Seville, Spain. Issued in 2024

The 2 Euro Spain 2024 National Police will be minted in 2024, this is the design created for the 200th Anniversary of the National Police. Issue 2024

Some historical information:
On January 13, 1824, King Ferdinand VII signed the Royal Decree that established the General Police of the Kingdom of Spain, the effective precursor to the Spanish National Police. Since then, the Spanish National Police has served the citizens and Spain, with the same spirit of public service.

In these 200 years of history, the National Police has gone through various phases and also different names, always maintaining its core values: integrity, professionalism, impartiality, and respect for all human rights.

The Spanish National Police is today one of the most beloved and appreciated national institutions.

On the Obverse of the commemorative coin, the logo of the Spanish National Police is depicted. At the top of the coin, the inscription POLICÍA NACIONAL 1824-2024 is engraved, with the crowned mint mark M to the right. At the bottom of the coin, centrally, the inscription ESPAÑA.
