2 Euro Commemorative Belgium

We start with the first Belgian €2 commemorative coin minted in 2005, dedicated to the Economic Union of Belgium and Luxembourg. Coin dated 25/05/2005.

On the Obverse of the coin, there are left-facing profiles of the King of Belgium Albert II, in the foreground, and the Grand Duke of Luxembourg Henri, behind.
At the bottom center is the minting year 2005, while the initials of the engraver Luc Luycx are located under the neck of the King of Belgium on the right.
The outer ring, made of nickel and copper, features six stars in a semicircle at the top and six at the bottom. On the right side of the center is the monogram of King Albert II, which is the crowned A, and on the left is that of Henri, the H with crown.
Also at the bottom, on the left is the symbol of the Brussels Mint, the cross with Archangel Gabriel, and on the right is the symbol of the Director of the same Mint, which is the Balance of Romain Coenen.

The Reverse features the Common Face with the nominal value of 2 euros and a map of Europe. This side is the same for all commemoratives.

In 2006, a commemorative €2 coin was issued dedicated to the Atomium, the monument to the Atom located in the Heysel Park in Brussels. Issued on 10/04/2006.

On the Obverse, in the nickel and brass coin, there is a photographic representation of the Atomium with its nine unit cell atoms, and to the right is the engraver Luc Luycx's signature (LL).
At the bottom right is the symbol of the Mint Director Romain Coenen, the scales, and to the left is the mark of the Brussels Mint, the Archangel Gabriel with the cross.
The year of minting is in the outer circle of the coin, at the bottom center, on the copper and nickel ring, part of the design of the monument also overflows, and the 12 stars are imprinted in a circle like the logo of Europe.

The Reverse instead features the Common Side like the other two-euro coins, indeed it shows the nominal value and the map of Europe in use in 2006.

We move to 2007 and the commemorative coin common to all European countries, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Treaties of Rome. The coin was minted on 25/03/2007, the very day in 1958 when the Treaties were signed in Rome.

On the Obverse of the 2 euro commemorative coin in the Belgian version of the Treaties of Rome, we find in the background the geometries of the pavement designed by Michelangelo for Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome.
In the foreground, the book of the Treaty with the signatures. Just above the book and within the geometry is the inscription EUROPA, at the top of the coin in a semicircle, with the inscriptions PACTUM ROMANUM / QUINQUAGENARIUM on two lines.

Also in a semicircle but at the bottom, BELGIQUE–BELGIE–BELGIEN appears with the year 2007 above it, separating the symbols of the Mint Director Romain Coenen on the left (The scales) and on the right that of the Mint (The Archangel Gabriel with the cross)
All around, one after the other, the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European States are repeated.

The opposite side of the coin is the Reverse, the new Common Face where the new version of the map of European countries is used, showing all the States of Europe united without any signs of borders between them.

In 2008, Belgium issued a commemorative coin dedicated to Human Rights, marking the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was released on 1/06/2008.

The Obverse of this 2 Euro coin from Belgium features a vertically positioned rectangle with a sphere engraved at the top and the number 60 at the bottom. The rectangle is wrapped in an ornamental ribbon that intertwines to form wavy lines.
Above this graphic representation, the year 2008 is inscribed, while below, in four lines, the inscription UNIVERSAL / DECLARATION / OF / HUMAN RIGHTS.

On the left, the symbol of the Belgian Mint, the Archangel Gabriel with the cross, is followed by the inscription in an arc BELGIQUE–BELGIE–BELGIEN, and finally, the symbol of the Director of the Mint, Romain Coenen, which is a scale.

In 2009, the commemorative coin is minted in European countries to celebrate the first 10 years of the European Union (EMU). The coin was issued on 27/09/2009.

On the Obverse, there is a stylization of the man merging with the Euro symbol, a design reminiscent of primitive art, with the artist's signature below the € (Georgios Stamatopoulos ΓΣ). Above is the inscription BELGIQUE – BELGIE – BELGIEN, while below is EMU 1999-2009, to the right the Archangel Gabriel with the cross, symbol of the Belgian Mint, and to the left is the symbol of Romain Coenen, the Mint director, which is the scales.
Surrounding the coin are, as usual, the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European States.

Once again, a coin from 2009, this time dedicated to a figure who literally changed the lives of the visually impaired, Louis Braille, the inventor of the eponymous Braille Code. Issued on 25/09/2009 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of his birth.

On the Obverse of the 2 euro coin, there is a portrait of Louis Braille with his eyes closed, dressed in 19th-century French attire. Above the portrait is his name LOUIS BRAILLE, and below are the birth year and the minting year 1809 2009, separated by the Belgian initials BE. On either side of the dates, to the right is the feather, the symbol of the new Director of the Belgian Mint Serge Lesens, and to the left is the Archangel Gabriel with a cross above.
To the right and left of the bust are the typical raised spheres of the code he invented. Surrounding the central part of the coin is the ring made of copper and nickel, adorned with stars symbolizing Europe.

Here we have another Belgian €2 commemorative coin minted in 2010 for the Presidency of the European Union. Issued on 10/06/2010.

On the Obverse, at the center of the bimetallic coin within the profile of a circle, the two initials eu of the European Union are engraved in italic, with the inscription trio.be above the 'u', and below is the mintmark featuring the Archangel Gabriel along with a cross and the feather, the mark of the Director Serge Lesens.

Surrounding the upper half of the coin, the inscription BELGIAN PRESIDENCY OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EU 2010 is engraved in uppercase, while the lower part features BELGIE BELGIQUE BELGIEN
The circle formed by the 12 stars on the outer part of the bimetallic coin symbolizes Europe.

On the Reverse, we find the value side, also known as the Common Side, which is the same for all €2 coins.

In 2011, the commemorative bimetallic coin is minted for the 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day. Issued on 3/05/2011.

On the Obverse, there are two portraits; on the right is Marie Popelin, the first female lawyer in Belgium, and on the left Isala Van Diest, the first female doctor in Belgium. The two portraits are placed above the female symbol, and above the figures are the two symbols of their professions, namely the caduceus on the left and the scales on the right.
At the top of the commemorative coin, starting from the left, is the feather, symbol of Serge Lesens, Director of the Mint, followed by the abbreviation of the Belgian state BE and finally the mint mark itself, which is the Archangel Gabriel with a cross above.

On the lower part of the coin, the name I.VAN DIEST is followed by the year 2011 and the name M.POPELIN.

In the outer ring around the central part of the coin, the 12 stars symbolizing the EU are distributed.

On the Reverse, we find the Common Side with its face value of 2 euros.

In 2012, to celebrate the 10 Years of EURO, banknotes and coins, a commemorative coin was issued that is the same for all Eurozone countries. The commemorative coin was issued in Belgium on 30/01/2012.

On the Obverse, it features the same design as the other states but with the identifying initials BE for Belgium engraved at the top, flanked by the feather of the Mint Director Serge Lesens and the mint's mark, along with the depiction of the cross above the Archangel Gabriel.
In the center of the nickel and brass coin, there is the symbol of € that transforms into a globe, surrounded by a series of symbolic representations of the importance of the Euro in people, industry, energy, and trade. Below, in a semicircle, are the dates 2002 2012.

Another Belgian €2 Commemorative coin minted in 2012 is dedicated to Queen Elisabeth and the eponymous Music Competition. The coin was issued on 06/05/2012 to celebrate the 75 years since the first edition in 1937.

Specifically, on the Obverse, the profile of Queen Elisabeth is depicted facing left, above it, overlapping, is the logo of the Music Competition, which consists of two mirrored E's with a crown above. Above the silhouette of the Queen, the dates 1937 – 2012 are inscribed, and to the right is the Belgian BE mintmark.

In a semicircle, in the central and lower area of the coin, starting from the left, is the feather, symbol of the Mint Director Serge Lesens, the inscription QUEEN ELISABETH COMPETITION, followed by the logo of the Belgian Mint, the head of the Archangel Gabriel with a cross above.
Surrounding the coin, in the copper and nickel part, are the classic 12 five-pointed stars arranged in a circle representing the European States.

Here we have the coin from 2013 issued for the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Royal Meteorological Institute. Bimetallic coin issued on 18/09/2013

On the Obverse, the number 100 appears in three different fonts and sizes, with the second zero transforming into a stylized sun. Inside the first zero, the initials KMI and IRM are inscribed on two lines. KMI stands for Königliches Meteorologisches Institut and IRM stands for Institut Royal Météorologique.
In the background on the left, the meteorological lines isobars are depicted, below them the stylization of rain and snow.

Among the rays of the sun at the bottom, the Belgian initials BE and below the 1, the symbols of the Mint and the new Director, the Archangel Gabriel for the Mint and the Cat for Bernard Gillard. At the top center, the minting year 2013 and all around, the twelve stars that form the identifying logo of Europe.

Also in 2014, Belgium issued a commemorative bimetallic coin for the 150th Anniversary of the Belgian Red Cross. Issued on 18/09/2014.

The Obverse of this 2 euro coin from Belgium features the Cross, the symbol of the Red Cross, with the number 150 at the center, the word CROIX at 9 o'clock, ROUGE at 3 o'clock, RODE vertically at 12 o'clock, and finally KRUIS vertically at 6 o'clock. At the top left is the cat of the Director of the Belgian Mint Bernard Gillard, and at the top right, the Archangel Gabriel as a symbol of the Mint. At the bottom left is the identifying mark of Belgium BE, and finally at the bottom right, the year 2014.

We arrive at 2014 with the commemorative coin issued to remember the 100 Years since the start of World War I, which lasted until 1918. This coin was issued on 12/05/2014.

On the Obverse of these €2 commemorative coins, the date 2014-18 appears with the inscription The Great War Centenary below it, and to the upper right, the symbol for fallen soldiers, a Poppy flower. At the top right, the inscription in a semicircle reads BELGIE BELGIQUE BELGIEN, while at the bottom, the symbols of the Cat and the Archangel Gabriel appear, with a cross above, the emblem of the Mint Director Bernard Gillard for the first, and the Mint of Brussels for the second.

Also in 2015, a commemorative coin dedicated to the European Flag was minted across Europe. It is one of those commemoratives that are the same for all Eurozone countries, where only the issuing country code and language change. Issued on 19/11/2015 for the 30th Anniversary of the European Flag.

Let's analyze the Obverse: There are twelve stylized figures of a man and a star all around the European Flag, where the logo of Europe with the 12 stars in a circle is embossed. This logo is also repeated on the outer ring of the coin, the part made of nickel and copper.

Surrounding the flag at the top is the inscription BELGIE-BELGIQUE-BELGIEN. On the right, the symbols of the Brussels Mint, the Archangel Gabriel with the Cross above for the Mint and the Cat for the Director Bernard Gillard. The author's signature is under the arm of the star on the right (Georgios Stamatopoulos).

The Reverse: The value side of the coin with the nominal value of two euros, also known as the Common Side of the bimetallic 2 euro coins.

We are in 2015 and at the commemorative coin inspired by the European Year for Development. Coin minted on 17/09/2015.

On the Obverse, we see a female hand holding the globe in the background, and in the foreground, a seedling. Surrounding the stylized globe is the inscription 2015 EUROPEAN YEAR FOR DEVELOPMENT, below the hand are the two identifying letters of the Belgian state BE, and to the left is the cat, emblem of the Director of the Belgian Mint Bernard Gillard, along with the Cross of the Archangel Gabriel as the emblem of the Mint itself.

The outer ring of the bimetallic coin is characterized by the twelve five-pointed stars arranged in a circle as in the logo of Europe.

In 2016, a commemorative coin is dedicated to Missing Children, on the occasion of the founding of Child Focus, which aims to raise awareness about the issue of missing or abused children. The coin was issued on 25/05/2016, coinciding with the International Day for Missing Children.

On the Obverse, there is a detailed depiction of a Child (Liam Vanden Branden), with the inscription in a semicircle at the top reading BELGIE-BELGIQUE-BELGIEN, flanked by the symbols of the Brussels Mint, the Archangel Gabriel on the left and the cat, symbol of the Director Bernard Gillard, on the right.
At the bottom left, the inscription along the edge reads MISSING-DISPARU-VERMIST, while on the right is the website dedicated to missing children WWW.CHILDFOCUS.BE.

In Belgium in 2016, a commemorative coin is minted for its participation in the XXXI Olympic Games that will take place the same year, in August, in Rio de Janeiro. Issued on 23/03/2016.

On the central part of the Obverse, the 5 interlocking rings, symbol of the Olympics, are depicted, along with a stylized figure with raised arms at the top. Below is the semicircular inscription TEAM BELGIUM, to the left vertically is the year of minting 2016, and finally to the right, on three lines, the mint mark, the head of the Archangel Gabriel with the cross, the Belgium initials BE, and the symbol of the mint director Bernard Gillard, the cat.

The 2017 coin also honors another Belgian university, in this case commemorating the 200th anniversary of the University of Ghent, which was issued on 29/09/2017.

On the Obverse, the logo of the prestigious University of Ghent is depicted, with the dates 1871 – 2017 below it.
Surrounding it is the inscription in a circle 200 JAAR UNIVERSITEIT GENT – 200 YEARS GHENT UNIVERSITY.

At the bottom center is the abbreviation for Belgium BE, to its left is the Coat of Arms of the municipality of Herzele, the mark of the Director of the Mint Ingrid van Herzele, and to the right is that of the Brussels Mint (Head of the Archangel Gabriel with a cross above).
Above the nickel and copper part, the outer ring of the bimetallic coin, five-pointed stars are distributed along the circle, as in the symbol of Europe.

On the Reverse, there is a map of European countries and the nominal value of the 2 euro coin.

In 2017, the commemorative coin dedicated to the University of Liège was issued to celebrate its 200th anniversary. The issuance took place on 21/04/2017.

The Obverse: Depicts the Coat of Arms of the University of Liège with the date 1817 on the left, marking its foundation, and 2017 on the right, the year of the coin's issuance.
Surrounding the coin is the inscription 200 ANS UNIVERSITE DE LIEGI – 200 YEARS UNIVERSITY OF LIEGI, with the Belgian mint mark BE below the center, to its left the symbol of the new Mint Director Ingrid van Herzele, and to the right the symbol of the Brussels Mint, the Archangel Gabriel with a cross above.

Also from 2018 is the bimetallic coin dedicated to a satellite, namely the Satellite ESRO-2B marking 50 years since its launch on 20/09/2018.

Let’s analyze the Obverse of this 2 euro coin from Belgium and see that prominently on the left is the Satellite ESRO-2B in orbit around the Earth, which appears in the background on the right. Below the satellite is the inscription IRIS, which stands for International Radiation Investigation Satellite.
Above in a semicircle is the designation of the satellite ESRO-2B with the dates 1968 and 2018 displayed on two lines below.

At the center below is the designation for Belgium BE, to its right the mark of the Utrecht Mint (the caduceus) and to its left the logo of the Mint Director Ingrid van Herzele, the coat of arms of Herzele. To the right, below the globe, is the signature of the designer Luc Luycx (LL)

In 2018, we find the theme of University once again in the commemorative coin that marks the 50th anniversary of the Student Revolt 1968, which took place in the universities of Belgium and began on May 13, 1968. Issued on 14/05/2018.

On the Obverse, there are two protesting university students raising a flag and a sheet of protest and satire. In the background, the facade with columns symbolizes the university. At the top of the coin, the words mei and mai are displayed one above the other, alongside the date 1968.

On the left, the minting year 2018, the Belgium code BE, and the Utrecht Mint mark, the caduceus, along with the symbol of the Mint Director Ingrid van Herzele (the coat of arms of Herzele). Surrounding it are the stars as seen in the European Union logo.

Another commemorative coin from 2019 is the one issued for the 25th Anniversary of the European Monetary Institute EMI, which was released on 9/05/2019.

The Obverse of the coin features the portrait of the first President who led the European Monetary Institute EMI, Alexandre Lamfalussy, depicted on the right side of the coin wearing glasses, a suit, and a tie. Below him is his name A.Lamfalussy and the Belgium mint mark BE followed by the year 2019.

In the foreground to his left, there is a column of coins stacked on top of each other, each marked with a symbol: € – ECU – BEF, a clear symbol of the monetary transition from the Belgian franc to the euro. Above Lamfalussy's shoulder are the initials of the engraver Luc Luycx.

To the left, the date 1994 is shown with the inscription EMI below it, separated by a line, and in a semicircle at the top left, the words European Monetary Institute. At the bottom left of the coin, the two representative symbols of the Mint are displayed: the symbol of the Mint Director Ingrid van Herzele (the coat of arms of Herzele) and that of the Utrecht Mint, the caduceus.

In 2019, a commemorative coin was dedicated to one of the greatest Flemish painters of the 1500s, Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The coin was issued on 1/03/2019.

On the Obverse, there is a profile of Pieter Bruegel the Elder facing left, with a backdrop on the left featuring an easel displaying one of his most famous paintings, “The Tower of Babel”. At the top in a semicircle is his name P.BRUGEL, and below, between the easel and the portrait, are the year of his death and the year of minting of the coin 1569 + 2019.

To the left of the coin, arranged in three lines, is the coat of arms of Herzele, which is the symbol of the Mint Director Ingrid van Herzele, the Belgian initials BE, and finally the symbol of the Utrecht Mint, a caduceus.
Along the outer circle of the bimetallic coin are stars forming the circle, the logo of the European Union.

The Reverse is the opposite side of the coin featuring the face value of 2 euros, the so-called Common Side which is the same for all commemoratives.

The other coin planned for 2020 is dedicated to the most renowned Flemish artist of the 15th century, Jan van Eyck. Issued on 15/10/2020

On the National Side of the Obverse, there is the Portrait of a man with a red turban, a work from 1433 by Jan van Eyck, considered by many to be a self-portrait.
To the left is his faithful signature (taken from the painting of the Arnolfini Portrait) with an oil palette below.

At the top of this 2 euro Belgium coin, in a semicircle, is the inscription J- van Eyck, to the right of the portrait is the year 2020, and below, separated by a line, is the Belgian mint mark BE.
At the bottom, there are engraved the two mint symbols, the coat of arms of Herzele, an identifying symbol for the Mint Director Ingrid van Herzele, and the caduceus, which is the symbol of the Utrecht Mint.
Also on this coin, as with the others, in the outer ring of copper and nickel, there are twelve stars arranged in a circle, like in the logo of Europe.

Here we are in 2020 with the coin issued to celebrate the International Year of Plant Health. Issued on 5/03/2020

On the Obverse, the central disc features 5 leaves arranged in a globe, protecting the world, above the globe is the semicircular inscription INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF PLANT HEALTH, which is the official logo of the International Year of Plant Health 2020.

To the left is the symbol of the coat of arms of Herzele, identifying the Mint Director Ingrid van Herzele, and to the right the caduceus, the symbol of the Utrecht Mint.
Below the leaves is the year 2020, and beneath the date is the identifying mark for Belgium BE.
As with other commemoratives, on the outer ring made of copper and nickel, there are 12 stars arranged in a circle, the logo of the European Union.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Belgium 2021 Economic Union Belgium Luxembourg was chosen to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the economic union between Belgium and Luxembourg. Coin issued on 7/07/2021

On the Obverse of the coin, there are right-facing profiles of King Philippe of Belgium in the foreground and Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg in the background. To the right, above the maps of Belgium BE and Luxembourg LUX, the vertical inscription ECONOMIC UNION is engraved, along with: the coat of arms of the municipality of Herzele, which is also the symbol of the director of the Belgian Mint Ingrid van Herzele, and the caduceus, which symbolizes the Dutch Mint.

At the bottom, the dates 1921 and 2021 are present, and to the right are the initials of the designer Luc Luycx LL. Surrounding it are the 12 stars of the European symbol.

2 Euro Commemorative Belgium 2021 Karlsgulden minted under Charles V, commemorate the 500th anniversary of the ordinance of the second period of coin issuance during the reign of Charles V. Coin issued on 27/10/2021

The Obverse features the portrait of Charles V in Renaissance attire, beneath the inscription CAROLUS V. On the upper left, the Carolus d'or is depicted, which was the coin issued under the ordinance 500 years ago; below it is the monogram of Belgium BE and the date of issuance of the commemorative 2021.

At the bottom of the coin, the symbols of the Dutch Mint, the caduceus, and the coat of arms of the municipality of Herzele are present, which also represents the symbol of Ingrid van Herzele, director of the Belgian Mint. Almost centrally, and on the lower edge of the coin, are engraved the initials of the designer Luc Luycx LL

The 2 Euro Commemorative Belgium 2022 Erasmus Program coins were issued in all EUROZONE countries to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus Program. Coin issued on 1/07/2022

On the right, on the Obverse of the coin, the portrait of Desiderius Erasmus writing his essay “In Praise of Folly”, the portrait is depicted on a bundle of links that crosses the central background of the coin, intertwining to form the number 35. At the bottom right, the inscriptions 1987-2022 and ERASMUS PROGRAMME are engraved.

In the center, the sign BE, the monogram of Belgium. Below, the caduceus, symbol of the Dutch mint, and the coat of arms of the municipality of Herzele, identifying the director of the Belgian Mint, Ingrid van Herzele. Above Erasmus's right hand, the initials of the author, Joaquin Jimenez, JJ. On the outer edge, 12 five-pointed stars representing the European Union.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Belgium 2022 Healthcare during the Covid19 Pandemic is dedicated to all healthcare workers who distinguished themselves for their humanity and dedication during the challenging period of the Covid 19 Pandemic. The coin was issued on 11/05/2022

The Obverse of the coin features the profile of a healthcare worker, facing left, protected by a gown, mask, and cap. The coin includes the symbol of the Medical Cross at the top right, while on the left are engraved the symbols of a stethoscope, a heart with an ECG line, a syringe, the symbol of a wheelchair, and also a mortar and pestle. Also on the left is the inscription DANKE – MERCI – DANK U directed to the Healthcare Workers of Belgium.

At the bottom right, there is the year 2022 and the monogram of Belgium BE, to their right the coat of arms of the municipality of Herzele, which also represents the symbol of Ingrid van Herzele, director of the Belgian Mint, and the symbol of the Dutch Mint, the caduceus. The initials of the designer Luc Luycx LL are engraved behind the Healthcare Worker.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Belgium 2023 Art Nouveau commemorates the artistic and philosophical movement from the late 19th century to the early 20th century: Art Nouveau. Coin issued on 20/06/2023

On the Obverse, the inscription ART NOUVEAU is surrounded by the decorative detail of the facade of the Hotel Van Eetvelde, a UNESCO World Heritage site, designed by Belgian architect Victor Horta. Slightly lower left is the monogram of Belgium BE and the year of issue 2023. On the left is the caduceus, symbol of the Dutch mint, and the aster flower in front of an Erlenmeyer flask, symbolizing the director of the Belgian Mint Giovanni Van de Velde.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Belgium 2023 Women's Suffrage in Belgium commemorates the 75th anniversary of Women's Suffrage in Belgium. Issued on 25/10/2023.

On the Obverse of the coin, the Venus Symbol is depicted, representing the female gender, with a pencil marking the vote on the ballot below; the design is signed by Iris Bruijns IB. At the top, the inscription ALGEMEEN VROUWENSTEEMRECHT is engraved, at the bottom SUFFRAGE UNIVERSEL FÉMININ, on the left, the inscription 75 JAAR ANS is engraved, and on the right, the monogram of Belgium BE, the issuance date 2023, and the caduceus from the Dutch mint, the aster flower in front of an Erlenmeyer flask, symbolizing the director of the Belgian Mint Giovanni Van de Velde.

The Belgium 2024 €2 commemorative marks the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU.

The obverse, by Iris Bruijns, shows 27 swallows in flight; legend BELGIAN PRESIDENCY OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EU 2024, mark BE, mint director/mint marks and initials IB; twelve EU stars. Mintage about 2,130,000. One page per design.

The Belgium 2024 €2 commemorative honours the fight against cancer in Belgium (Lutte contre le cancer / Strijd tegen kanker).

The obverse, by Iris Bruijns, shows a rainbow of hope, a heartbeat ribbon, bilingual legends, mark BE and year 2024, mint marks and initials IB; twelve EU stars. Mintage about 2,130,000. One page per design.

The Belgium 2025 €2 commemorative honours the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
