2 Euro Commemorative Austria

The first €2 Commemorative coin from Austria was minted in 2005 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Austrian State Treaty signed in 1955.

As we can immediately notice on the Obverse, the €2 Austria 2005 coin features, finely depicted in the background, the Austrian flag adorned with the seals of the 9 signatories of the Treaty. Specifically, the signatories were the foreign ministers John Foster Dulles for the United States of America, Vjačeslav Molotov for the Soviet Union, Antoine Pinay for France, Harold Macmillan for the United Kingdom, and Leopold Figl as the Austrian foreign minister.

Additionally, the High Commissioners of the occupying powers signed, including Geoffrey Arnold Wallinger for the United Kingdom, Ivan Il'ičov for the Soviet Union, Llewellyn E. Thompson Jr for the United States, and Roger Lalouette for France.

Apart from the seals, we can see at the top the inscription “50 JAHRE STAATSVERTRAG” meaning “50 years of the State Treaty,” at the bottom left the mint year, and all around the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the coin features the same design as all other €2 coins.

The second €2 Commemorative coin from Austria was minted two years after the first, in 2007, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, signed in 1957 to establish the European Economic Community (EEC) and EURATOM.

On the Obverse, the 2007 Austrian €2 coin features, perfectly centered, the treaties signed by the six member states, all topped by the inscription EUROPA.
In the background, we can see the paving of Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, where the treaties were indeed signed on March 25, 1957.

At the top, there is an arch-shaped inscription arranged in two lines. Specifically, the inscription reads “VERTRAG VON ROM, 50 JAHRE”.
At the bottom, the year of minting is placed, followed by another inscription: “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH”, meaning “Austrian Republic”.
Surrounding it are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.
It is important to specify that this is the first coin minted by the Vienna mint to feature the second type of common face.

Let’s move on to the third €2 Commemorative coin from Austria, minted in 2009 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union.

On the Obverse, the €2 coin from Austria 2009 features a fairly explanatory design. Specifically, it depicts a primitive human figure alongside the Euro symbol. This signifies that the Euro represents the final stage in the history of trade. It is important to note that the design was chosen by European citizens through an online survey.

At the top, we can see the inscription “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH,” meaning “Austrian Republic,” while at the bottom is “WWU 1999-2009” (Economic and Monetary Union). If observed closely, one can also notice the initials of the designer ‘ΓΣ' engraved just above the year 2009.

All around the coin, there are the classic 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states, while on the Reverse, the face is identical to all other €2 coins.

The next coin we will analyze was minted in 2012 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the circulation of Euro banknotes and coins.

On the Obverse of the 2 Euro Austria 2012 coin, we can see the symbol of the Euro engraved, perfectly positioned at the center of the globe, surrounded by various representations. Specifically, we notice people (indicating how important the Euro is for citizens), a ship (representing trade), a factory (representing industry), and wind turbines, which naturally symbolize energy.

Once again, the design was chosen by EU citizens through an online survey. Above is the arch inscription “REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH” or “Austrian Republic,” while below are the dates “2002 – 2012.” Surrounding it, as always, are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states, while on the Reverse, the face is identical to that of other 2 Euro coins.

On the Reverse, the Common Side of the two euro coins is depicted.

The coin is included in the FDC Coincard, the “Baby” FDC Coincard, and the FS Coincard.

This coin was minted in 2015 to honor the 30th anniversary of the European Flag.

On the Obverse, we can see the representation of the European flag, placed in the center, symbolizing the union of peoples and cultures that share common ideals. Surrounding the flag are twelve stylized human figures representing the citizens of the European Union.

The design for this coin is the result of an online survey open to European citizens. At the top right, the inscription “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH” or “Austrian Republic” is engraved, accompanied by the dates “1985 – 2015”. At the bottom right, the initials of the designer are present, while, as usual, we can notice the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European States surrounding the design.

On the Reverse, the 2 Euro Austria 2015 coin features the same face as all other 2 Euro coins, the Common Side.

The coin is available only in circulation.

The penultimate coin in this interesting collection is the €2 Commemorative coin from Austria minted in 2016 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Austrian National Bank.

On the Obverse of the €2 Austria 2016 coin, we can immediately notice two figures from Roman mythology. Specifically, we see Mercury (on the left), the messenger of the gods and the god of merchants and commerce, and on the right, Fortuna, the goddess of chance and prosperity, depicted holding the characteristic cornucopia.

These two deities are represented in a bas-relief that overlooks the entrance of the Austrian National Bank (OeNB).
At the bottom, beneath the feet of the two deities, there is an ornamental band that evokes the characteristic colors of the Austrian flag (red-white-red).
At the top, the inscription “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH” or “Austrian Republic” is placed, while at the bottom in an arch is “200 JAHRE OESTERREICHISCHE NATIONALBANK”.

Finally, next to the deities, the dates “1816 – 2016” are inscribed. Surrounding the design are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states, while the Reverse is the same as the other €2 coins.

The coin is included in the FDC Coincard, the FDC “Baby” Coincard, and the FS Coincard.

The Reverse is the so-called Common Side of the €2 coin.

Finally, we have arrived at the last coin in this collection (at least for now). Specifically, this €2 Commemorative coin from Austria was minted in 2018 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Austrian Republic.

On the Obverse of the 2 Euro Austria 2018 coin, we can observe a wonderful design depicting the statue of Pallas Athena with the neoclassical building of the European Parliament in Vienna in the background.

The choice of Athena is not at all random. She is the goddess of wisdom, embodying knowledge, intellect, and reason, which symbolizes the Austrian Parliament.

To the left of the goddess is the year of minting, with the inscription “100 JAHRE” immediately below. At the bottom right, we find the inscription “REPUBLIK OSTERREICH,” meaning “Austrian Republic.”

As with all Eurozone countries, the 2 Euro commemorative coin Austria 2022 is dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus Program, which stands for the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students.
The Erasmus program was indeed established on June 15, 1987 and is named after the Dutch humanist and theologian Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam. Throughout his life, the humanist traveled across Europe to learn about its diverse cultures, which is why the creators of the project decided to name it after him. Thus, the commemorative coin was issued by all Eurozone countries in 2024. Issued on 07/01/2022

The Obverse features the portrait of Erasmus of Rotterdam engaged in writing his most famous work, “The Praise of Folly”, with a background of interwoven links highlighting the number 35. Additionally, the lines symbolize the numerous travels and interconnections between the various countries visited by Erasmus of Rotterdam.
