Catalog of rare €2 coins

There are over 500 €2 coins minted in the last 20 years across all countries that have adopted the Euro. Among these, there are numerous rare €2 coins! In fact, 19 countries have issued coins that fall into the category of rare €2 coins!

The term “Rare” refers to the actual classification of the coin as a rare coin, which can be of two types: “R” or “R2”. In reality, other types of coins can have even higher degrees of rarity (R3, R4, etc.), but for coins like the commemorative €2 coins, the maximum rarity is R2. The higher the numerical value of R, the greater the economic value of the coin. If the coins are not rare, they are classified as NC (not common), C (common), or CC (very common).

Every day, many coins circulate in our pockets, and I can confidently say that at least once in your life you have paid for “that coffee” with a rare €2 coin… and you didn’t even notice. But don’t worry, maybe from today you will pay more attention to your change and look closely before spending your €2 coins carelessly.

How do 2 euro coins become rare 2 euro coins?

But how does a 2 Euro coin become a Rare 2 Euro? Great question!

There are several reasons that can increase the value of a two Euro coin:

A minting error can turn a very common two Euro coin into a highly sought-after Rare 2 Euro!
A country may decide to mint few pieces of a coin, which then starts out as a Rare 2 Euro right from the Mint that issues it.
There are countries that issue commemoratives that are historically very sought after, such as the 2 Euro coins from San Marino.
Or the emissions exclusively for numismatists, which are hard to find.
But it is mainly the variations of division coins that characterize the Rare 2 Euro coins.

When a country issues a new commemorative, it does so to commemorate an event, a place, a historical figure, or a historical period. What unites these coins is primarily the Common Side of the 2 Euro, which is the same for any reverse of the coins, whether they are common or rare coins.
The second thing that unites them is the face value of the coin, which is 2 Euro for all.

However, we know that some of these can be worth not only a few hundred euros, but in some cases thousands of euros, the Rare 2 Euro coins indeed. Not necessarily the most sought-after 2 Euro coins are the commemoratives; in fact, most of the time, it is the division coins that are classified as rare.

Rare 2 euro coins – common minting errors

A minting error can be a golden opportunity. In fact, a nice “Bull's Eye” can change the classification to Rare 2 Euro for any common coin and increase its value by a few hundred euros, of course, if you find the right enthusiast to sell it to.

Even a rotated die can inflate the value of a common 2 Euro coin, just like with all other coins after all. Any anomaly during the minting process can be an opportunity not to be missed by a collector of “Minting Errors”.

In fact, there is a niche in numismatics that collects only “Minting Errors” and searches for them with a lantern.

Rare 2 euro coins – prestige countries

The sought-after emissions are those from prestigious countries such as Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City, Andorra, Malta, Finland, etc. These are nations that practically issue commemoratives considered prestigious regardless. Some of these coins reach exceptional prices, as we will see below.

Countries that have issued rare 2 euro coins

As I mentioned earlier, there are 19 countries that have issued 2 Euro coins classified as Rare, and if they haven't increased in the meantime, I have counted at least 65 “Rare Two Euros” among commemorative and circulating coins. Here is the list of countries that can boast Rare 2 Euro coins among their issues:

Andorra, Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Portugal, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Vatican City.

Italy, unfortunately, is not on this list; we hope it can be added soon. Let's look at the numerous Rare 2 Euro coins minted, starting from Andorra and ending with Vatican City. Rare Andorra 2 Euro Coins

Andorra is one of the Nations that has issued highly sought-after Commemorative coins, with the value of each Commemorative ranging from €20 to €30 if in good condition. However, the Commemorative coins of Andorra are not classified as rare coins. Until recently, the only coin considered rare was the 2 Euro Andorra 2016 Divisionale. Today, however, it is classified as a rare Non Common coin.

The 2 Euro Andorra 2016 Divisionali have a value of about 16€ and a mintage of only 35,000 pieces in Uncirculated condition.
