2 Euro Commemorative Latvia

The first Latvian commemorative €2 coin was minted in 2014 and is dedicated to Riga. Coin dated 12/08/2014.

On the Obverse of this €2 Latvia coin, there is a view of the city of Riga seen from the Daugava River, showcasing the park, the Riga Castle in front of the Town Hall Square with St. Peter's Church and the Cathedral. This represents the heart of the city of Riga, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997 and European Capital of Culture in 2014.
At the top of the coin, the inscription in an arc reads EIROPAS KULTURAS GALVASPILSETA, below it is RIGA – 2014 and finally the abbreviation for Latvia itself LV.
The outer ring, made of nickel and copper, features the twelve stars that symbolize Europe.

Now for the Reverse, which depicts the Common Side, thus identical for all commemorative coins.

In 2015, three commemorative coins were issued in Latvia.
One of these, issued on 10/02/2015, features the Logo of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union on the Obverse, with the inscription LATVIJAS PREZIDENTŪRA ES PADOMĒ on the right, which means Latvian Presidency of the Council. On the left is the website of the Presidency: EU2015.LV.

The outer ring of the bimetallic coin is engraved with the symbol of Europe (12 five-pointed stars in a circle).

The Reverse of the coin displays the value side with the inscription 2 Euro.

Let's move on to another Latvian coin from 2015, that of the European Flag. The coin is identical to those issued the same year by other European countries, with the engraving of the Latvian state changing. It was minted to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Flag.

On the Obverse of this 2 euro Latvia, there is the Flag of Europe surrounded by 12 stylized figures of men and stars, with the signature of the author Georgios Stamatopoulos in the bottom right.
At the top, the state inscription LATVIJA and to the right, the dates 1985-2015.
All around, the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European States are repeated.

The Reverse is the opposite side of the coin featuring the nominal value of 2 euros.

The third and final coin of 2015 is special, as it is dedicated to a protected animal, the Black Stork, which has also become a symbol across Europe for the conservation of endangered nature. Issued on 1/12/2015.

On the Obverse, there is a depiction by Olga Šilova of a very rare Black Stork walking with a twig in its beak. Below, in two lines, is the inscription in print LATVIJA 2015.

The symbol with the 12 European stars is engraved all around the nickel and copper part of the bimetallic coin.

The Common Side is the so-called value side, which features the inscription of 2 euros.

Another commemorative €2 coin from Latvia minted in 2016 and dedicated to an animal. This time we are talking about the Brown Cow, a typical Latvian Cow and a recognized symbol of milk productivity in Latvia. Commemorative coin issued on 18/09/2016.

On the Obverse, we can indeed see the profile of the Latvian Cow grazing, designed by Gunārs Lūsis. Below the hind legs of the large bovine, the minting year 2016 is engraved, while at the bottom center is LATVIJA. Surrounding it are, as usual, the twelve five-pointed stars representing the European States.

On the Reverse, the Common Side is represented as on all other €2 coins.

Once again, a coin from 2016, this time dedicated to a place, specifically to a historic region of Latvia.

On the Obverse of the 2 euro Latvia coin, the inscription LATVIJA (Latvia) is above the Coat of Arms of Vidzeme. The coat of arms features a heraldic depiction of a Winged Griffin holding a dagger, below the inscription VIDZEME (Livonia) and to the right, the year 2016.
Surrounding it, there are 12 five-pointed stars, symbolizing the European countries.

On the Reverse, the Common Side is depicted, as with all other two Euro coins.

The 2017 issue features a commemorative coin dedicated to a historic region of Latvia. Like the previous commemorative, this one also depicts a Coat of Arms, this time of Kurzeme (Courland). Issued on 17/11/2017.

On the Obverse, at the center of the bimetallic coin is the Coat of Arms of Kurzeme, a Baltic coat of arms featuring a Lion with the inscription LATVIJA above and KURZEME below. The year 2017 is located on the right side of the coin. The symbol of Europe, the circle formed by 12 stars, is on the outer part of the bimetallic coin.

On the Reverse, we find the Common Side, which is the same as the other 2 Euro coins.

But also the Commemorative coin minted for Latgale is from 2017. Coin issued on 14/11/2017. This one also features the Coat of Arms of Latgale with a Lion facing left holding a dagger. Above it is the inscription LATVIJA, below LATGALE, and on the side the year of issue 2017. All around are the 12 stars symbolizing the EU.

Meanwhile, on the Reverse we find the Common Side with the value of 2 euros.

The commemorative coin of 2018 was issued for the Independent Baltic States and the centenary of the event. It was presented on 31/01/2018.

On the Obverse, the union of the three Coats of Arms of the Baltic States, specifically Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia. The Coats of Arms are at the top and serve as the tips of a long braid of hair, an explicit symbol highlighting the bond between the three States. They are often referred to as the three Baltic sisters.

The design was selected through a public competition held in the three European countries and is by Justas Petrulis.

On the left, the word “LATVIJA” is inscribed in uppercase letters, and on the right, the year of issue “2018”. Along the outer edge, the 12 five-pointed stars symbolizing the European countries are distributed.

As for the Reverse of this 2 Euro Latvia coin, it features the Common Side of the 2 Euro coins.

Another €2 Commemorative coin from Latvia minted in 2018 is dedicated to Semgallia, issued on 26/09/2018.

Specifically, on the Obverse, the Zemgale Coat of Arms is prominently featured, representing this historical region of Latvia. The coat of arms depicts a large Deer facing left. Above it is written LATVIJA, to the right is 2018, and below is ZEMGALE. Surrounding the coin are the classic 12 five-pointed stars representing European States.

As for the Common Side, this is on the Reverse of the Bimetallic.

Here we have the coin from 2019, featuring a symbol that is also present in the Coat of Arms of Latvia: The Rising Sun. This bimetallic coin was issued on 17/09/2019.

Now, let's describe the Obverse, which showcases a stylization of the Rising Sun with the two letters forming the monogram BL (Brīvā Latvija), which translates to Free Latvia. Below the engraving is LATVIJA and the year 2019 displayed in two lines in a central banner. At the top in a semicircle, it reads UZLECOSA SAULEIN, meaning Rising Sun.

Surrounding the coin are the usual 12 stars emblematic of European countries.

The Common Side is on the Reverse of the coin, and it is the same as all 2 euro bimetallic coins.

We arrive at 2020 with the commemorative coin issued in honor of Ceramics of Latgale. Issued on 06/05/2020.

On the Obverse of this 2 euro Latvia coin, there is a 5-branched ceramic candlestick, with the year 2020 above and the inscription LATVIJA, while below is LATGALES KERAMIKA. In the outer ring, there are star symbols of Europe arranged in a circle.

On the Reverse, the coin features the common side of other 2 Euro coins, the Common Face with the face value.

Here we have the 2 Euro Commemorative Latvia 2021 issued for the 100th anniversary of the DE JURE recognition of the Latvian Republic. Indeed, on January 26, 1921, France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy, and Japan, as the Supreme Allied War Council, recognized Latvian sovereignty. Issued on 01/21/2021.

On the Obverse, in a futuristic design, the inscription appears in 4 lines:

On the Reverse, the Value Side, the common face of the 2 euro coins.

The 2 Euro Latvia 2022 Financial Education coin was minted to encourage people to reflect on sound economics, both individually and collectively. Coin issued on 12/04/2022.

On the National Side, the Obverse features a stylized tree of prosperity with the year of issue 2022 at its base. At the bottom center, there is the inscription LATVIJA. Surrounding the perimeter of the coin are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European Union.

On the Common Side, the Reverse is engraved with the face value of the coin, 2 EURO.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Latvia 2022 Erasmus Program coins were issued in Latvia as in all Eurozone countries and are dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus Project, a student exchange program within Europe. The coin was issued on 1/07/2022.

On the Obverse of the coin, there is a profile portrait of the philosopher and humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam, depicted while writing the essay “In Praise of Folly.” At the bottom right, the inscription 1987-2022 ERASMUS PROGRAM LATVIJA is engraved in four lines. The signature of the author JJ (Joaquin Jimenez) is above the philosopher's right hand. In the background, there is a weave of lines symbolizing movements across Europe, highlighting the number 35.

Surrounding it are the twelve stars of Europe in a circle.

The Reverse is the value side of the coin, featuring the value of 2 EURO.

The €2 Sunflower Slava Ukraina 2023 is dedicated to Ukraine. Issued on 30/05/2023.

On the Obverse, a stylized sunflower is engraved, which is one of the symbols of the Ukrainian people in their fight for peace, with the inscription SLAVA UKRAINAI! above it. At the bottom of the coin, the name of the issuing state and the year LATVIJA 2023 are engraved.
The chosen symbol is due to the fact that Ukraine is the largest grower and producer of sunflowers in the world, as well as an important exporter of sunflower oil. The sunflower has thus become the global symbol of peace, used in Ukraine as a symbol since the summer of 1996. They were also planted at the Pervomaisk missile base to celebrate the removal of nuclear weapons from the country. The sunflower is now used worldwide to express support for the Ukrainian people.

Surrounding the coin are engraved the 12 European stars.

On the Reverse of the €2 2023 coin with the Sunflower and the inscription Slava Ukrainai, the Value Side with the Common Side of the €2 is engraved.

The Latvia 2024 €2 commemorative honours the puzuris, a traditional Latvian winter-solstice hanging ornament. Issued on 21 November 2024.

The obverse shows a puzuris suspended by a thread, with inscriptions LATVIJA and 2024, plus the 12 EU stars on the outer ring. National design by Ieva Krūmiņa; struck at the Royal Dutch Mint.

Total mintage 413,000: 400,000 circulating, 7,000 BU in gift packaging and 6,000 in annual BU sets.

The Latvia 2025 €2 commemorative honours Sēlija (Selonia), the fifth and final historical region in Latvia's regional series. Issued on 9 October 2025.

The obverse shows the Sēlija coat of arms with a stag; inscriptions LATVIJA, SĒLIJA and year 2025; 12 EU stars on the outer ring. Designer: Laimonis Šēnbergs; struck at the Lithuanian Mint.

Total mintage 413,000: 400,000 circulating, 7,000 BU in gift packaging and 6,000 in annual BU sets.

The Latvia 2026 €2 commemorative celebrates the country's Christmas market tradition (Ziemassvētku tirdziņa tradīcija). Issue planned during 2026 (Latvijas Banka).

The obverse shows a festive market scene with Latvian and English inscriptions on the theme, year 2026 and LV; 12 EU stars on the outer ring. Reverse is the common €2 face.
