2 Euro Commemorative Slovakia

The first commemorative 2 Euro coin from Slovakia was minted in 2009 to mark the 20th Anniversary of November 17, 1989, a day that went down in history as the so-called “Velvet Revolution.”

On this day, citizens marched while jingling bunches of keys in honor of freedom and democracy.

On the Obverse, we can indeed observe the representation of a bell forming a bunch of keys. Arched above is the inscription “SLOVENSKO 17. NOVEMBER SLOBODA DEMOKRACIA” “1989-2009”.
At the bottom right, the symbol of the Kremnica Mint “MK” (Mincovňa Kremnica) and the initials of the designer are engraved.

The second coin in this collection is the €2 Commemorative coin from Slovakia minted in 2009 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).

On the Obverse, we can see the representation of a stylized primitive human figure next to the Euro symbol. This design signifies the euro (and thus the EMU) as the final step in human economic progress, from barter to a single currency. It is noteworthy that this design was directly chosen by European citizens through a survey.

Above in an arc is the inscription “SLOVENSKO” while to the left is the symbol of the Kremnica Mint “MK” (Mincovňa Kremnica). At the bottom, we can observe the inscription “EMU 1999-2009” (Hospodárskej a Menovej únie). All around the coin are the usual 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

As for the Reverse, it is practically identical to that of any other €2 coin, as it features the Common Side.

Now let's move on to the next 2 Euro Commemorative coin from Slovakia, the third commemorative. This coin was minted in 2011 to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Visegrad Group, which consists of Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary.

On the Obverse, we can see the representation of the maps of these states. Superimposed on the geographical maps are the letters “VIV” indicating the Visegrad Group. At the bottom left is the minting year “2011”, while at the bottom right is the inscription “SLOVENSKO” accompanied by the initials of the designer and the symbol of the Kremnica Mint “MK” (Mincovňa Kremnica).

At the top in an arch, the inscription reads “VYŠEHRADSKÁ SKUPINA • VISEGRAD GROUP” “15.2.1991”. The outer edge of the coin features the classic 12 five-pointed stars representing the EU member states.

The fourth coin in this collection is a common piece among other European states. Specifically, we are talking about the 2 Euro Commemorative coin from Slovakia minted in 2012 to celebrate the 10 years of banknotes and coins in Euro.

On the Obverse, a magnificent design is engraved that represents the Euro placed at the center of the globe, highlighting its importance for Europe. Surrounding it are various elements that emphasize its centrality. For example, we have a ship representing trade, a factory representing industry, people indicating the populace, and wind turbines symbolizing energy.

It is important to note that this design was chosen directly by European citizens through a survey.

Fifth commemorative: We move on to a coin of incredible historical and religious significance. In particular, this €2 Commemorative coin from Slovakia was minted in 2013 to mark the 1150th Anniversary of the mission of Constantine and Methodius in Great Moravia, which took place in 863 AD.

On the Obverse, the coin features the depiction of Methodius and Constantine holding a double cross and the gospel. Above this design, the inscription “KONŠTANTÍN METOD” is arched, while below it reads “SLOVENSKO ● 863 ● 2013”.
To the left, we find the initials of the author and to the right the symbol of the Kremnica Mint “MK” (Mincovňa Kremnica). As usual, the outer edge of the coin displays the 12 five-pointed stars representing the member states of the European Union.

The Reverse is identical to any €2 coin.

The next coin is extremely important for Slovakia and is the sixth commemorative coin minted. This €2 Commemorative coin was indeed minted in 2014 in honor of the 10th Anniversary of the Slovak Republic's accession to the EU.

On the Obverse, the stylized inscription “EU” is engraved with the coat of arms of the Slovak Republic prominently displayed. To the right is the date “1.5.2004”, which is the date of Slovakia's accession, and the year “2014”. Arched at the bottom is the inscription “SLOVENSKO” and to the left is the symbol of the Kremnica Mint “MK” (Mincovňa Kremnica).

This time we talk about a coin minted in honor of a historical figure, the seventh commemorative coin. Specifically, it is the 2 Euro Commemorative coin from Slovakia minted in 2015 to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Ľudovít Štúr, a Slovak linguist, poet, and journalist.

On the Obverse, there is a portrait of Ľudovít Štúr, with the inscription “SLOVENSKO” and “2015” arched above, while the symbol of the Kremnica Mint “MK” (Mincovňa Kremnica) is located at the top. At the bottom, the initials of the designer are present, and to the left, the inscription “Ľudovít Štúr” “1815-1865” is arched. Surrounding the coin are the classic 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, it features the usual Common Side of a 2 Euro coin.

For the eighth coin, we return to a very important coin common to all European States. In particular, the €2 Commemorative coin minted in 2015 to mark the 30th Anniversary of the European Flag.

On the Obverse, we can observe the representation of the European Flag placed at the center, surrounded by 12 stylized human figures symbolizing the European States united for the creation of a new Europe.
At the top right, the inscription “SLOVENSKO” and the years “1985-2015” are engraved. To the right, between the flag and the two dates, is the symbol of the Kremnica Mint “MK” (Mincovňa Kremnica).

All around the coin, the twelve five-pointed stars representing the European States are engraved. As for the Reverse, it is no different from that of any other €2 coin with its Common Side.

The next coin, the ninth commemorative Slovak coin, that we will analyze was minted in 2016 to commemorate the Slovak Presidency in the Council of the European Union.

On the Obverse, we can observe, placed at the center of dynamic centripetal lines, the coat of arms of the Slovak Republic. The placement of this emblem is not random as it indicates its centrality. To the right of the coat of arms, the year “2016” is engraved, while all around are the inscriptions “SLOVENSKO” (Slovakia) and “PREDSEDNÍCTVO SR V RADE EÚ” (Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU).

At the bottom, the symbol of the Kremnica Mint “MK” (Mincovňa Kremnica) and the initials of the designer are present. On the outer edge, the coin features the usual 12 five-pointed stars representing the EU member states.

The next coin is the €2 Commemorative coin from Slovakia minted in 2017 to celebrate the 550th Anniversary of the founding of the Istropolitana University. This is the tenth coin.

On the Obverse of the coin, there is a design featuring a teacher and two seated students. In the background, the historic building of the University of Bratislava is depicted, while in the upper left, the founder of the University, Matthias Corvinus, is shown within a small medallion.

Surrounding the design is the inscription “UNIVERZITA 1467 ISTROPOLITANA”, with “SLOVENSKO 2017” at the bottom and the symbol of the Kremnica Mint “MK” (Mincovňa Kremnica) on the left. As usual, the outer edge of the coin features the 12 five-pointed stars representing European states.

Let's move on to another very important coin in the history of Slovakia, the eleventh coin. Specifically, this 2 Euro Commemorative coin from Slovakia was minted in 2018 to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Constitution of the Slovak Republic.

On the Obverse, we can see the representation of the map of Slovakia which passes through a portal with the Euro symbol at the top surrounded by the stars of the European Union (some of which are covered by the map).

This design aims to represent the entry of the Slovak Republic into the EU and the eurozone. On the left, the coat of arms of the Slovak Republic is also engraved. At the bottom left, in a semicircle, the inscription “SLOVENSKÁ REPUBLIKA” is engraved, while below the map is the symbol of the Kremnica Mint “MK” (Mincovňa Kremnica) accompanied by the initials of the designer.

Below the inscriptions, the date of the establishment of the Slovak Republic “1.1.1993” and the year of issue “2018” are present.
On the outermost ring, we can observe, as usual, the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European countries.

The twelfth coin was minted in 2019 to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the death of Milan Rastislav Štefánik, Slovak politician and general.

On the Obverse, we can see a portrait of Milan Rastislav Štefánik in military uniform looking to the left. Also on the left are the inscriptions “SLOVENSKO”, “MILAN RASTISLAV ŠTEFANIK”, and the dates “1880-1919”.
On the right, the year of issue “2019”, the initials of the designer, and the symbol of the Kremnica Mint “MK” (Mincovňa Kremnica) are present.

This is the Commemorative coin of 2020 from Slovakia, created to celebrate the twentieth Anniversary of Slovakia's entry into the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Issued on 11/11/2020.

Indeed, on its National Side on the Obverse, inscribed within a square is the text 20 VYROCIE VSTUP SR DO OECD. Below the square, the nation and the year of minting are indicated: SLOVENSKO 2020. The circle intersecting the square symbolizes the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), a circle that becomes central in coordinating operations among various European Nations, hence the stylization in the shape of a brain.
At the bottom right is the coat of arms of Slovakia.

2 Euro Commemorative Slovakia 2021, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Dubček. Issued on 26/11/2021

On the Obverse, there is a profile of Alexander Dubček facing left, with Alexander Dubček's year of birth and death 1921 and 1992 on the lower right. Also on the lower right are the initials BR of the designer Branislav Ronai and the symbol of the Kremnica Mint MK (Mincovňa Kremnica).

In the outer ring, there are twelve five-pointed European stars arranged in a circle.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Slovakia 2022 Erasmus Program was issued in all Eurozone countries, marking 35 years since the start of the Erasmus Program. The coin was issued on 1/07/2022

The “Erasmus Program” was born in 1987 from the brilliant idea of educator Sofia Corradi, who, collaborating with Domenico Lenarduzzi, managed to create the conditions for this ambitious “Student Exchange Project across Europe” to take off. The name chosen for the project is dedicated to Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam (Humanist, Philosopher, and Theologian), author of The Praise of Folly, who traveled across Europe to learn about its diverse cultures.

On the Obverse of the commemorative coin, the profile of Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam is depicted as he writes his essay. Above his right hand is the signature of the engraver Joaquin Jimenez JJ. In the background, a series of intertwined lines form the number 35. At the bottom right, the inscription 1987-2022 EURASMUS PROGRAMME SLOVENSKO is engraved. At the bottom left is the symbol of the Kremnica Mint MK (Mincovňa Kremnica).

On the outer part around the perimeter of the coin, the 12 stars symbolizing the European Union are distributed.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Slovakia 2023 First Steam Engine coin was issued in Slovakia to celebrate the 300th Anniversary of the First Steam Engine. The coin was issued on 5/10/2022.

On the Obverse, the original design of the steam engine created by Isaac Potter is depicted, with the engineer's signature Isaac Potter to its left, along with the Kremnica Mint symbol MK (Mincovňa Kremnica) and the initials PV of the author Peter Valach.

On the right, the inscription SLOVENSKO 1722 • 2022 is engraved, surrounded by the 12 stars of Europe in a circle.

On the Reverse, the coin's value side is shown, with the nominal value of 2 EURO engraved.

To commemorate the Centenary of the first blood transfusion that took place in Slovakia, the 2 Euro First Transfusion 2023 Slovakia will be issued with a mintage of 1,000,000 copies. The coin was issued on 2/3/2023

On the Obverse, there is a drop placed in the center of a cross inscribed within a circle. On either side, the letters of the blood groups AB A B 0 are engraved. Surrounding it is a crown of drops alternating between positive and negative, some resembling blood test tubes.

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Vienna/Bratislava stagecoach, the 2 Euro Slovakia coins have been minted to commemorate 200 years since the start of the “Horse Express Courier service on the Vienna / Bratislava route. The coin was issued on 11/10/2023.

On the Obverse of the coin, there is a stylized depiction of a carriage in motion moving from right to left, with the carriage, featuring the logo of the Express Post in the center, being pulled by two galloping horses and driven by a courier in period attire. At the top of the coin, the word SLOVENSKO is inscribed, while at the bottom, the inscription VIEDEŇ BRATISLAVA is placed between the dates 1823 and 2023. On the side of the carriage to the right, there is the symbol of the Kremnica Mint MK (Mincovňa Kremnica) and the initials MP of the designer Maria Poldaufova.

Surrounding the design are the 12 stars of the European symbol.

To celebrate the 100 Years since the first Peace Marathon in Košice, Slovakia will mint the 2 Euro commemorative Slovakia 2024 Košice Marathon.

Issue Date: 09/2024

“Medzinárodný maratón mieru”, the International Peace Marathon, is the oldest marathon in Europe, taking place every first Sunday of October since 1924.
The race starts in the square of the same name, where the Marathon Monument is located, which lists the names and nationalities of the winners from 1924 to the present.

The Slovakia 2025 €2 commemorative marks the 100th anniversary of the first international sports tournament held in the Slovak Republic: the 1925 European Ice Hockey Championship in the High Tatras. Issued on 20 January 2025.

The obverse shows an ice hockey player in action in period uniform against a stylised High Tatras panorama; upper inscription MAJSTROVSTVÁ EURÓPY V HOKEJI, lower SLOVENSKO; years 1925 and 2025 at left; mint mark MK and initials KL. Designed by Karol Ličko; struck at the Kremnica Mint.

The Slovakia 2026 €2 commemorative honours Trenčín – European Capital of Culture 2026. Issued on 13 January 2026.

The Slovakia 2026 €2 commemorative marks the 50th anniversary of Czechoslovakia's victory at the 1976 UEFA European Football Championship. Issued on 15 June 2026.

The obverse shows a footballer dribbling the ball, flanked by laurel branches; curved inscription MAJSTRI EURÓPY 1976; lower SLOVENSKO and 2026; initials MH and mint mark MK. Designed by Matěj Hanuš.
