2 Euro Commemorative Slovenia

The first €2 Commemorative coin from Slovenia that we will discuss is related to the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome. Specifically, this coin was minted to commemorate the treaties that established the European Economic Community and EURATOM.

On the Obverse, the coin features a depiction of the treaties topped by the word Europe. In the background, there is the pavement designed by Michelangelo in Piazza Campidoglio, the location where the treaties were signed. At the bottom, the year of minting is present, followed further down by the inscription SLOVENIJA. At the top, in an arch composition, the inscription RIMSKA POGODEA, 50 LET is displayed.

On the outer edge, there are 12 stars representing the member states of the European Union.

On the Reverse, the coin is identical to any other €2 coin.

The next coin commemorates the 500th anniversary of the birth of Primoz Trubar, a Slovenian religious figure well-known and appreciated in his homeland.

On the Obverse, the coin features the effigy of Primoz Trubar facing left. To the left of his portrait are two inscriptions in an arc. The first reads “PRIMOZ TRUBAR” while the second includes the dates “1508 – 1586”, which correspond to the dates of birth and death of the religious figure.

To the right, also in an arc, is the inscription SLONEIJA 2008. As usual, the outer part of the coin displays the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the coin is identical to any other 2 Euro coin.

The third coin in this collection is a €2 Commemorative coin also shared with other states. Specifically, it commemorates the 10th anniversary of the European Economic and Monetary Union.

On the Obverse, a stylized figure merges with the Euro symbol. It is important to note that the design was chosen through an online competition in which the citizens themselves participated.

At the top in an arc is the inscription SLOVENIJA, while at the bottom, also in an arc, is the inscription EMU 1999 – 2009. Above the inscription, positioned to the right, is the signature of the designer. Surrounding it, as usual, are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the coin is identical to all other €2 coins.

The next coin is minted to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Botanical Garden of Ljubljana. It is a truly special €2 Commemorative coin.

On the Obverse, it features the depiction of the flower Hladinikia Pastinacifolia, which is found exclusively in the forest of Tarnova. Below, to the left, is the arch inscription Hladinikia Pastinacifolia. Surrounding the flower are the arch inscriptions SLOVENIJA 2010 and 200 LET BOTANICNI VRT LJUBLIANA.

On the outer part, there are the usual 12 five-pointed stars symbolizing the European states.

The coin in question was minted to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of General Franc Rozman-Stane, commander of the partisan army during World War II and a national hero.

On the Obverse, there is a stylized portrait of the general with a five-pointed star in relief at the bottom. To the right of the portrait, there are two vertical inscriptions: FRANC ROZMAN STANE and “2011”, while horizontally it reads “1911 – 1944” and the inscription SLOVENIJA.

Surrounding it are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the coin is identical to any other 2 Euro coin.

A €2 Commemorative coin shared by several countries also commemorates the 10th Anniversary of the Euro.

On the Obverse, the coin features a depiction of the Euro symbol at the center of the globe, framed by various elements with different meanings. For instance, we have the ECB tower representing finance, wind stations representing energy, factories representing the industrial world, ships for trade, and houses and people symbolizing the population.

At the top in an arch, the inscription SLOVENIJA, while at the bottom, also in an arch, the dates “2002 – 2012”. Surrounding it are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the coin is, as always, identical to all the others.

The next coin was minted to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the discovery of the Postojna Caves, a well-known natural site.

On the Obverse, the coin features a spiral that begins on the left with the inscription POSTOJNSKA JAMA 1213 – 2013 SLOVENIA and ends with two stylized stalagmites. As usual, the outer edge displays the 12 five-pointed stars representing the member states of the European Union.

On the Reverse, the coin is identical to all the others.

The Slovenian €2 coin we are about to see was minted to commemorate the 600th anniversary of Queen Barbara of Celje.

On the Obverse, the coin features the bust of the Queen, designed with a very interesting pattern of vertical lines. The Queen is depicted holding a scepter, and above her image are three six-pointed stars symbolizing the Counts of Celje.

To the left is the inscription “SLOVENJA” while to the right is the inscription “BARBARA CELJSKA” along with the dates “1414 – 2014”. Surrounding the design are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the coin is identical to all other €2 coins.

We arrive at a very important €2 commemorative coin from Slovenia. This coin was minted to commemorate the 2000th anniversary of the foundation of Emona, a city of Roman origin, an important military site used as a legionary fortress. Where Emona once stood, now lies the capital Ljubljana.

On the Obverse, there is simply the circular inscription “EMONA LJUBLJANA SLOVENIJA 2015”. Surrounding it are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the member states of the European Union.

As for the Reverse, it is identical to other coins as usual.

We come to another coin common to other States. This is the €2 commemorative coin honoring the 30th anniversary of the European Flag.

On the Obverse, the coin features the European Flag placed at the center with 12 human figures around it representing the various States and the beginning of a new Europe. Once again, the design was chosen by citizens through an online survey.

At the top right, the inscription “SLOVENIJA” is accompanied by the dates “1985 – 2015”. Surrounding it, as usual, are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European States.

On the Reverse, it features the usual side depicting Europe.

Another significant commemorative €2 coin is the one minted in honor of the 25th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Slovenia.

On the Obverse, it features the large inscription “25 LET” meaning “25 years” followed immediately below by “REPUBLIKA SLOVENIJA”. Just beneath are the words “dočákat' dan” taken from the poem “Zdravljica” by the poet France Prešeren, the Slovenian national anthem since 1990. At the bottom, there is the year of minting, and surrounding it are the classic 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the coin is identical to all the others.

We arrive at the penultimate coin in this collection. Specifically, this €2 commemorative coin from Slovenia was minted to mark the 10th anniversary of the introduction of the Euro in the country.

On the Obverse, there are 10 swallows of different sizes flying in a circle, creating a sense of depth.

At the bottom, the inscription “10 LET SKUPNE EVROPSKE VALUTE” (10 years of the common European currency) is included, while at the top, the word “SLOVENIJA” is followed by the year of minting.

Surrounding it are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the member states, while on the Reverse, the coin is identical to other €2 coins.

The next commemorative 2 Euro coin from Slovenia was minted to celebrate World Bee Day.

For this reason, the Obverse features a depiction of the Earth in the form of a honeycomb. At the top left, the inscription “SVETOVNI DAN ČEBEL” is present, while at the bottom right is “SLOVENIJA” along with the year of minting.

Surrounding it are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states. The Reverse of the coin, however, is identical to all other 2 Euro coins.

To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the University of Ljubljana, this commemorative coin is issued. Released on 25/11/2019.

On the Obverse, the square logo symbolizing the University of Ljubljana is featured. Above the logo, the inscription reads in three lines: 100 UNIVERZE LJUBLJANJ. A banner for the 100 is engraved with LET.
At the bottom right, in a semicircle, the inscription SLOVENIJA 2019 appears. The designers of the coin are Daniela Vidmar Podboj and Tomaz Podboj.

The 2 euro commemorative coins of Slovenia dedicated to Adam Bohorič are issued on the 500th Anniversary of his birth. Issued on 23/12/2020.

On the Obverse, there is an inscription that can be defined as multilingual, taken from the Latin text Arcticae horulae succisivae written by Adam Bohoric himself, a linguist and the father of the first Slovenian alphabet, known as the Bohorič Alphabet. The two intersecting phrases are:

At the top left in a semicircle, it reads Adam Bohorič 1520|Slovenija 2020.

Coin issued for the 200th anniversary of the birth of the first Museum in Slovenia, which took place in 1821.
Indeed, the Museum of Carniola was founded in Ljubljana in 1821 and has had several names since then, up to the current Natural History Museum of Slovenia.

The 2 Euro Slovenia 2022 Jože Plečnik is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Slovenian architect. Issued on 3/2/2022

On the Obverse, there is a depiction of the reading window of the University Library of Ljubljana, the Narodna in Univerzitetna Knjižnica, illustrated with a column at the center, and geometric shapes that form the signature of the architect A R H. P L E Č N I K among the stained glass, with the date 1872 vertically on the right. At the bottom of the coin, the inscription JOŽE PLEČNIK appears, and at the top right SLOVENIJA 2022.

On the outer ring of the coin, the 12 five-pointed stars of Europe are engraved.

The Reverse features the usual Common Side of the 2 euro coins.

2 Euro Slovenia 2022 Erasmus Issued on 1/07/2022

The 2 Euro Erasmus commemorative coin was minted in all Eurozone countries in 2022 and is dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus Programme (European Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students). It was minted to celebrate the 170th anniversary of its foundation. Issued on 1/07/20022

The Erasmus Programme was established in 1987 through the insight of educator Sofia Corradi and the collaboration of Domenico Lenarduzzi, who together created the conditions for this student exchange project across Europe. The name comes from Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam, a humanist, philosopher, and theologian, as well as the author of The Praise of Folly.

On the Obverse, there is a depiction, facing left, of Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam engaged in writing his essay, with the signature of the designer Joaquin Jimenez JJ above. In the background, a series of bands intertwine to form the number 35. At the bottom right, the inscription 1987-2022 EURASMUS PROGRAMME SLOVENIJA is engraved.

On the outer part, the 12 stars symbolizing the European Union are distributed.

On the Reverse, the value side of the coin features the value of 2 euros and the new map of Europe.

The Slovenian Central Bank has issued a competition to choose the design for the new commemorative coins of 2023. The coin was planned as early as 2022; however, due to the lack of high-quality designs, it was decided to repeat the monetary competition for ideas while waiting for a satisfactory graphic project.

For the 150th anniversary of the birth of Josip Plemelj, the 2 Euro Slovenia coins dedicated to Josip Plemelj in 2023 will be issued.

The coin must indicate the date 1873, the year of issue 2023, and the name JOSIP PLEMELJ.

In 2024, on the occasion of the 250th Anniversary of the National and University Library in Ljubljana, Slovenia will mint a €2 commemorative coin that pays tribute to a symbolic element of the Library itself. Coin to be issued in 2024

The design that wins the competition organized by the Bank of Slovenia features on the Obverse of the coin a stylization of one of the two handles of the National and University Library with the mythological winged horse Pegasus stylized. At the top of the coin, the inscription NARODNA IN UNIVERZITETNA KNJIŹNICA | 1774 is engraved. At the bottom, the inscription SLOVENIJA | 2024 is engraved.

The homage to Pegasus refers to a Roman-style detail of the Library's entrance.
Specifically, it is the stylization of one of the 2 handles of the main door of the library. The knob handle is stylized in the shape of a horse's head, a clear reference to Pegasus, the mythological winged horse that serves as a guide for all visitors to the library. A symbolic welcome on the journey into the world of knowledge and culture.

The date 1774 refers to the decree of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria that established the new library in 1774, following a tragic and unfortunate fire that destroyed the Jesuit college library in Levstikov Square.

Commemorates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Cankar, Slovenian writer and poet. Issued 17 June 2026, total mintage 1,000,000 (Portuguese mint). Obverse: optical portrait inspired by the Cankarjev dom sculpture, with IVAN CANKAR and SLOVENIJA 2026. Designer: Adam Breznik.
