Slovenia Euro Coins

The Cents and Euros of Slovenia were first adopted by this nation on January 1, 2007. However, its history as a member of the European Union began much earlier. In fact, it became a member on May 1, 2004.

In the 1990s, this state underwent significant changes that also led to the modification of the then-current currency. Indeed, with the independence of the Republic of Slovenia, achieved on June 25, 1991, and the subsequent dissolution of Yugoslavia, the prevailing Slavic currency, the Dinar, was replaced.

In fact, after a few months, a new currency specific to this country was introduced. It was the Slovenian Tolar, which remained legal tender until the introduction of the Euro (we discussed it in the dedicated article: the Slovenian Tolar).

Slovenia was the first Eastern state to adopt the single currency.

Lacking a national mint, this nation has always relied on foreign facilities to carry out the coinage. Specifically, they were produced by the Finnish mint (from 2007 and from 2009 to 2011), the Slovak mint (from 2012 to 2013), and the Dutch mint (from 2014 onwards).

The coins have no mint mark except for those from 2007, which bear the identifying mark of Finland “FI”, and those from 2008, which feature a winged caduceus, the symbol of the Dutch Mint of Utrecht.

The Euro coins of Slovenia feature a different design for each denomination and were created by the artists Miljenco Licul, Maja Licul, and Janez Boljka.

Let's take a closer look at them.

The 1 Euro Cent Slovenia coin is the first coin and also the one with the lowest value that we encounter.

It features on the Reverse the same common face as all 1 Euro Cent coins from Eurozone countries.

On the Obverse, however, there is a stork, a design already present in the history of Slovenian currency. The reference particularly goes to the previous coin in the 20 thalers piece.

On the left is the mint year.

Encircling the image are 12 five-pointed stars, placed around the outer edge of the coin, which are the symbol of the European Union, of which 10 of these enclose the inscription SLOVENIJA.

In the coins of 2007 and 2008, the mark of the mint that issued them is present.

Respectively, in the bottom right of star no. 6, the identifying mark of Finland “FI”. Also in the bottom right of the sixth star, the winged caduceus, symbol of the Utrecht mint and the sailing ship, symbol of the director of the Dutch mint M. Brouwer.

Since 2009, there is no mint mark present.

Continuing, we find the 2 Euro Cents Slovenia.

With a design different from the previous coins, on the Obverse, there is the ancient “Prince's Rock”. It is famous because it is where the first Duke of Carinthia settled.

Encircling the image are 12 five-pointed stars that line the outer edge of the coin, which are the symbol of the European Union, of which 10 of these enclose the inscription SLOVENIJA.

On the left is the mint mark.

In the currencies of 2007 and 2008, there is the mark of the mint that issued them.

Respectively, at the bottom right of star no. 6, the identifying mark of Finland, namely “FI”. Also at the bottom right of the sixth star, the winged caduceus, symbol of the Utrecht mint and the sailing ship, symbol of the director of the Dutch mint M. Brouwer.

Since 2009, there is no mint mark.

On the Reverse, however, there is the same common face found on all 2 Euro Cents from countries belonging to the European Union.

The 5 Euro Cents Slovenia are the last “red” cents we encounter.

On the Reverse, they feature the same common face as all 5 Cents from the Eurozone countries. On the Obverse, however, at the center of the coin, there is depicted a work by the Slovenian painter Ivan Grobar, The Sower. This silhouette is accompanied by 13 stars and 23 dots, placed to its left in elliptical curves. Below, on the left between stars number 7 and number 8 is the mint year.

In the currencies of 2007 and 2008, there is the mark of the mint that issued them. Respectively, in the coins of the first year mentioned, at the bottom right of star number 6, is the identifying mark of Finland “FI”.

In reference to the second year mentioned, also at the bottom right of the fourth star, there is the winged caduceus, symbol of the Utrecht mint and the sailing ship, symbol of the director of the Dutch mint M. Brouwer. Since 2009, there has been no mint mark.

On the outer edge of the coin enclosing the image, there are 12 five-pointed stars, which are the symbol of the European Union. Additionally, 10 of these enclose the inscription SLOVENIJA.

Next, we find the 10 Euro Cents Slovenia.

On the Obverse, at the center of the coin, is engraved the unrealized project of architect Joze Plecnik (1872-1957) for the national Parliament building with the inscription “KATEDRALA SVOBODA” (Cathedral of Freedom). Below the building is the mint year.

On the outer edge of the coin, surrounding the image, are 12 five-pointed stars, which are the symbol of the European Union. Additionally, 10 of these enclose the inscription SLOVENIJA. In the 2007 and 2008 issues, there is the mint mark of the issuing mint. Specifically, on the coins from the first year mentioned, to the bottom right of star no. 7, is the identifying mark of Finland “FI”.

In reference to the second year mentioned, also at the bottom right of the seventh star, is the winged caduceus, symbol of the Utrecht Mint and the sailing ship, symbol of the director of the Dutch mint M. Brouwer.

From 2009 onwards, there is no mint mark.

On the Reverse, they present the same common face as all the Cents of the countries that are part of the Eurozone.

Here we have the 20 Cents Slovenia coin, round in shape with 7 indentations distributed along its length, also known as the “Spanish Flower” shape. The coin features on the Obverse two Lippizaner horses. Around the edge of the coin, there is the inscription S L O V E N I J A alternated with 10 of the 12 stars, and in the innermost circle, the inscription L I P I C A N E C. At the bottom, the year of minting is displayed, and on the coins from 2006 and 2007, the symbols of the Finnish and Dutch mints are also engraved.

On the Reverse, however, is the common face shared by all 20 cent coins from all Eurozone countries.

Here are the 50 cent Slovenia coins with a reeded edge that feature on the Obverse the image of Mount Triglav in honor of the highest peak in all of Slovenia. The peak is topped by the constellation of Cancer in reference to the month of June, as it was on June 25, 1991, that Slovenia gained independence. In the upper inner semicircle is the inscription OJ TRIGLAV MOJ DOM, the twelve stars along the entire edge, and at the top the inscription S L O V E N I J A with the letters separated by stars. The year of minting is at the bottom left, and next to the central lower star is the mintmark for the years 2007 and 2008.

On the Reverse the face is the same for all Eurozone countries.

The 1 euro Slovenia coin features Primoz Trubar on the Obverse, with the inscription STATI INU OBSTATI in the upper inner semicircle, which means “To rise and exist.” In the lower inner semicircle, the name PRIMOZ TRUBAR appears on two lines with staggered letters. On the outer ring made of brass, the twelve five-pointed stars representing the European Union and the inscription S L O V E N I J A with letters separated by stars are depicted. On the left, the year of minting is shown, and on the coins from 2007 and 2008, the mint mark is located below next to the central lower star.

On the Reverse, the new Common Side is depicted, featuring the unified countries of the 1 euro coins from the member states of the European Union.

Bimetallic is also the 2 Euro Slovenia coin, with a nickel-brass center and a nickel outer ring.

On the Obverse, the profile of France Preseren, a Slovenian poet, is depicted looking to the left. Below is the verse of the national anthem of Slovenia: SHIVÉ NAJ VSI NARÓDI (God bless all Nations). This verse is taken from France Preseren's most famous poem, Zdravljica.

In the semicircle at the bottom left is the name of the poet FRANCE PRESEREN. On the outer ring, S L O V E N I J A is inscribed with the letters alternating with 10 of the twelve stars representing the European Union.

The year of minting is on the left in two lines, and on the coins from 2007 and 2008, there is also the mint mark next to the right of the lower central star.

The Reverse is the new Common Side of the 1 Euro coin, the same design for all Eurozone countries.
