The first coin honoring a historical figure. Specifically, the 2 Euro Commemorative Italy 2009 that commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille Code, which is named after him.

On the Obverse, the 2 Euro coin from Italy 2009 depicts a hand turning the pages of a book, with its index finger resting on the inscription “LOUIS BRAILLE 1809 – 2009”. Below the hand is the name LOUIS BRAILLE, represented in the alphabet he invented, along with the signature of the designer further down.
