2 Euro 2005 Commemorative Coins

What we will see in this in-depth analysis is the first coin that is part of the Austrian 2 Euro Commemoratives. In particular, we are talking about the 2 Euro Commemorative coin of Austria minted on May 11, 2005, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Austrian State Treaty.

This Treaty was extremely important for Austrian politics as it restored complete independence and democracy to Austria. It was signed in Vienna in 1955 at the Belvedere Palace by France, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Soviet Union. The Austrian government resumed full powers starting from July 27 of that same year.

Let’s start with the first Belgian commemorative 2 euro coin that was minted in 2005 and dedicated to the Economic Union of Belgium and Luxembourg. Coin dated 25/05/2005.

On the Obverse of the coin, there are left-facing profiles of the King of Belgium Albert II, in the foreground, and the Grand Duke of Luxembourg Henri, behind.
At the bottom center is the minting year 2005, while the initials of the engraver Luc Luycx are located under the neck of the King of Belgium on the right.
The outer ring, made of nickel and copper, features six stars in a semicircle at the top and six at the bottom. On the right side of the center is the monogram of King Albert II, which is the crowned A, and on the left side is Henri's monogram, the H with crown.
Also at the bottom, on the left is the symbol of the Brussels Mint, the cross with the Archangel Gabriel, and on the right is the symbol of the Director of the same Mint, namely the Balance of Romain Coenen

The Reverse features the Common Side with the nominal value of 2 euros and the map of Europe. This side is the same for all commemorative coins.

In 2005, on 25/10/2005, the Finnish commemorative 2 euro coin UN was issued, marking the 50 Years since Finland Joined the UN.

On the Obverse, a puzzle forms a dove with an olive branch in its beak. The dove is the recognized symbol of Peace, determined by the synergy and unity of the individual pieces/Countries.
On the right is the year of issue 2005 with the letter K above, the signature of the engraver Tapio Kettunen. On the left is written FINLAND-UN with the letter M above, the symbol of Raimo Makkonen, Director of the Finnish Mint.
Surrounding the coin are the 12 stars of the European Union arranged in a circle, interrupted only on the right by the dove's wing.

Reverse: The reverse side is the Common Side, the same for all 2 euro coins, both commemorative and non-commemorative, featuring both the nominal value and the map of Europe with the borders of the countries outlined.

Meanwhile, the edge of the coin is finely milled and bears the inscription: YK 1945 – 2005 FN followed by the 3 lion heads.

The second coin is the 2 Euro Commemorative Italy 2005, which was minted in honor of the 1st anniversary of the signing of the European Constitution.

On the Obverse, the coin features a very distinctive depiction. It shows the allegorical representation of Europa being abducted by Zeus, depicted as a bull. The nymph holds the text of the European Constitution and a pen.

At the bottom, there is the monogram of the Italian Republic with the author's signature on the left. At the top right is the year of minting, while the mint mark is on the top left. Surrounding the design are the usual 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

The next coin to discuss is the 2 Euro commemorative San Marino 2005, created in honor of the World Year of Physics.

On the Obverse, we can indeed see one of the major figures in physics, namely Galileo Galilei, observing through a telescope with a globe beside him and the minting year. At the bottom in an arch is the inscription WORLD YEAR OF PHYSICS while at the top is SAN MARINO. To the left of the representation, we can see the mint mark R while on the right are the initials of the author LDS (Luciana de Simoni). Surrounding the coin, as always, are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states. On the Obverse, the coin has the same face as the other 2 Euro coins.

The very first €2 commemorative coin from Spain was minted in 2005 in honor of Don Quixote, the famous literary character known for his futile fight against windmills. Issued on 30/06/2005

On the Obverse of the €2 coin from Spain 2005, we find a faithful representation of Don Quixote wielding a lance, with windmills in the background.

To the left is the inscription ESPAÑA, with the crowned M, the symbol of the Mint, directly below it.
On the outer edge, at the bottom, the year of minting is present, separated by one of the 12 stars. As with all Euro coins, the stars symbolize the European States.

Now we move on to the second commemorative 2 Euro coin from the Vatican. In this case, the coin commemorates the XX World Youth Day.

Specifically, on the Obverse, the 2005 Vatican 2 Euro coin features the depiction of the Cologne Cathedral overlooked by a comet star. Surrounding it is the circular inscription “XX GIORNATA MONDIALE DELLA GIOVENTU”.

On the left, the name of the sculptor “LONGO” and the engraver “E.L.F. Inc.” are present. All around are the 12 five-pointed stars interrupted at the top by the mint mark and year of minting, while at the bottom is the inscription “CITTÀ DEL VATICANO”.

On the Reverse, the coin features the same design as the others.
