2 Euro Commemorative Greece

Let's start with the first commemorative 2 Euro coin from Greece, which is perhaps the most well-known, yet it is the least valuable.
I am referring to the one minted in 2004 to commemorate the Olympic Games held in Athens that same year.

As we can see on the Obverse, the coin features a perfectly centered representation of the Discobolus of Myron with the five Olympic rings to the left, which, as we know, is the official symbol of the Olympics, along with the inscription ATHENS 2004 above.
To the right, we can see the inscription 2 EYPO, which signifies 2 Euro. At the top, there is the Anthemion, a stylized flower that is the symbol of the Athens Mint.

At the bottom, we find the year of minting divided into two digits with the sixth star in the center. As with all other coins, the 12 stars representing the European States are clearly visible around it.

On the Reverse, the coin features the old Common Side, which is the same as other 2 Euro coins. (The

Here we have the next coin that was minted precisely in 2007 in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome.

On the Obverse, we can see the representation of the Treaties signed by the six Member States topped by the inscription ΕΥΡΟΠΗ.

In the background, there is a depiction of the floor of the Piazza del Campidoglio where the treaties were indeed signed. Above, there is also the inscription ΣΥΝΘΗΚΗ ΤΗΣ ΡΩΜΗΣ, 50 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ. To the right, we find the Anthemion, a stylized flower that is the symbol of the Athens mint.

At the bottom, we find the year of minting with an arching inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ below it. The twelve stars representing the European Countries are engraved along the outer edge and distributed in a circle.

As for the Reverse, it is interesting to note that this is the first coin minted by the Athens Mint to feature the New Common Side with the unified map of European Countries.

Now it's time for the 2 Euro commemorative coin from Greece, minted in 2009 to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union.

The design of this coin was chosen by European citizens through an online survey.

Specifically, on the Obverse, we can see the Euro symbol with to the left a primitive drawing of a man representing human evolution leading to the Euro. At the top, we can notice the arching inscription EΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ, while to the right is the symbol of the Athens Mint.
At the bottom, there is the inscription ONE 1999 – 2009. In the outer ring of the coin, as with all coins, the 12 five-pointed stars are distributed.

On the Reverse, the coin features the Common Side.

This specific €2 Commemorative coin from Greece was minted in 2010 to celebrate the 2500th Anniversary of the Battle of Marathon, where the Greeks defeated the Persians led by King Darius I.

On the Obverse, we can see the depiction of a Hoplite Warrior, emblematic of freedom, with a bird in the background representing the birth of Western civilization as we know it today.
At the top, we can first notice the symbol of the Athens Mint, followed by the inscription MAPAΘΩNAE 2500 XPONIA. At the bottom, there is the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ 490 π.x. 2010 M.x.

Surrounding the coin, as usual, we can see the 12 five-pointed stars, symbolizing the European States. The Common Side is on the Reverse of the bimetallic coin.

We arrive at a coin of truly significant historical importance. In particular, this €2 commemorative coin was minted in 2011 to mark the XIII Edition of the Special Olympics.
These are Olympic Games in which individuals with intellectual disabilities and multiple disabilities compete. They differ from the Paralympics, where individuals with physical disabilities participate.

On the Obverse, we can see a radiant sun with a branch of olive at its center, which together highlight the strength and excellence of the athletes participating in the Games. At the top, we can observe the inscription “XIII SPECIAL OLYMPICS W.S.G.” and “ATHENS 2011,” while at the bottom, the text ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ is displayed.
Between the two highlighted inscriptions is the symbol of the Athens Mint, surrounded by the 12 five-pointed stars representing the member states of the European Union.

On the Reverse, the Common Side is depicted.

Let's move on to another 2 Euro commemorative coin from Greece for which an online survey was conducted involving European citizens.

This coin was minted in 2012 to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the issuance of Euro Banknotes and Coins.

The design on the Obverse features several elements. The people represent the importance of the Euro for citizens' lives, the ship symbolizes trade, the factory represents industry, and finally, the wind turbines symbolize energy. At the top, we find the classic inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ, meaning “Hellenic Republic,” and at the bottom, the dates 2002 – 2012.

As usual, surrounding the design are the 12 five-pointed stars symbolizing the European States.

On the other side of the coin, the Reverse, is the Common Side.

Another coin of incredible historical importance is the one minted in 2013 to commemorate the 2400th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Platonic Academy.

On the Obverse, we can observe a profile portrait of Plato with the inscriptions “2400 years since the foundation of the Academy of Plato” to the right and the classic ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ. To the right, we find the symbol of the Athens Mint followed immediately by the year of minting.

As with all coins, we can notice the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European States around the edge. The Reverse features the Common Side, which is common to all 2 euro coins.

The next coin to analyze is the one that commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the Official Union of Crete with Greece minted in 2013.

On the Obverse, we can indeed observe the representation of Cretan warriors symbolically raising the Greek Flag. At the top, in a circular inscription, we note the wording ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ.
At the bottom, we find the inscription “100 years of the union of Crete with Greece” and to the right the dates “1913 – 2013” along with the symbol of the Athens Mint.

On the outer part of the coin, we can always see the 12 five-pointed stars representing the member states of the European Union.

Meanwhile, the Common Side is designed on the Reverse of the commemorative coin.

Another coin that commemorates an important annexation to Greece is this bimetallic coin, minted in 2014. It was specifically created to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the union of the Ionian Islands with Greece.

On the Obverse of this 2 euro Greece 2014, we can see the representation of a seven-pointed star which contains the inscription 150 YEARS OF UNION BETWEEN THE IONIAN ISLANDS (EPTÀNISA) AND GREECE – 1864-2014 – ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ with the symbol of the Athens Mint just below it.
On the outer edge of the star, between each point, are the symbols of the Ionian Islands, all surrounded by a wave motif.

As always, the outermost part of the coin features the 12 five-pointed stars representing the member states of the European Union.

On the Reverse, the Common Side which is identical for every 2 euro coin, including the commemorative ones.

In 2014, another commemorative coin was minted by Greece. This coin was specifically created to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the Death of Domenikos Theotokopoulos (known as El Greco), a renowned Greek painter, sculptor, and architect.

On the Obverse, we can see the portrait of the artist El Greco, with a representation of his technique and style in the background. To the left, the year of minting is noted along with the artist's signature at the bottom, while to the right is the symbol of the Athens Mint.

On the upper side of the coin, there is the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ and just below it, DOMENIKOS THEOTOKOPOULOS 1541-1614.

On the Reverse, we can see the Common Side, identical to other 2 Euro coins.

We are presented with another 2 Euro Commemorative coin from Greece minted in 2015 in honor of the Anniversary of the death of an important figure in Greek history. Specifically, this was created for the 75th anniversary of the death of Spyros Louis, a renowned Greek marathon runner.

On the Obverse of the 2 Euro Greece 2015, we can see a depiction of the athlete Spyros Louis alongside the chalice awarded to him. In the background, there is an illustration of the Panathenaic Stadium.
At the top left, the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ appears, while at the bottom, it reads 75 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΜΝΗΜΗΣ ΣΠΥΡΟΥ ΛΟΥΗ. Directly above the chalice is the minting year, and to its right is the symbol of the Athens Mint.
Along the circumference of the commemorative coin are the usual 12 five-pointed stars representing European States.

The next commemorative coin was minted in 2015 to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the European Flag.

On the Obverse, we can see a representation of the Flag surrounded by people representing the European populace. The symbolic value of this design is the union of peoples and cultures sharing a common ideal for a better future.

Notably, the depicted figures number 12, representing the European States. At the top right, we find the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ in a circle, alongside the dates 1985 – 2015. Additionally, between the flag and these dates is the symbol of the Athens Mint. Surrounding it, as always, are the 12 five-pointed stars symbolizing the European States.

The Common Side is the Reverse of the coin.

The next €2 Commemorative coin from Greece was minted in 2016 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Holocaust of the Monastery of Arkadi.

This structure, the Monastery of Arkadi, was the site of a tragic event during the Cretan revolution against Ottoman rule:

In 1866, 943 Cretans (mostly women and children) took refuge from the Ottomans inside the monastery. After three days of battle, they chose to blow themselves up with barrels of explosive powder rather than surrender. This episode was not decisive for the battle but certainly drew the world's attention to the Cretan situation.

On the Obverse of this coin, we can immediately see the representation of the Monastery of Arkadi, with the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ on the left and the year of minting on the right. Below, under the Monastery, is the inscription ΜΟΝΗ ΑΡΚΑΔΙΟΥ, with the symbol of the Athens Mint even further below. All around, on the outer ring of the bimetallic coin, we can observe the twelve five-pointed stars, symbol of the European States.

The Reverse features the design of the Common Side.

The €2 commemorative coin from Greece that we will analyze now was minted in 2016 in honor of the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Dimitri Mitropoulos, a renowned Greek composer and conductor.

On the Obverse, we can see the artist's portrait against a background of musical notes. To the left, the inscriptions 120° ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗ ΓΕΝΝΗΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΗ ΜΗΤΡΟΠΟΥΛΟΥ and ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ are engraved in an arc.
Just after the inscriptions, still in the upper left, we can notice the year of minting and the symbol of the Athens Mint.
Around the copper-nickel ring, as always, five-pointed stars are depicted as a European symbol.

On the Reverse, we can see the Common Side.

We continue with another €2 commemorative coin from Greece. This coin was minted in 2017 in honor of the 60th Anniversary of the Death of Nikos Kazantzakis, a renowned Greek poet, writer, playwright, philosopher, essayist, journalist, and translator. Probably the most important of all time.

On the Obverse, we can immediately notice the representation of Kazantzakis' bust in profile. To the left, the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ is arched above the name Nikos Kazantzakis. At the top, the year of issue and the Anthemion, which is the flower symbol of the Athens Mint. Above the nickel part of the bimetallic coin, we can observe, as always, the 12 five-pointed stars, which represent the countries of Europe.

On the Reverse, the Common Side.

The next coin was minted in 2017 and, this time, not in honor of a historical figure but of a place. Specifically, the €2 commemorative coin from Greece was minted in honor of the archaeological city of Philippi, a site of great importance for the Hellenic world.

On the Obverse of the 2 Euro Greece 2017, there is a depiction of a part of Basilica B and the characteristic geometric decorative motifs found at the site. To the left, there are two inscriptions. The first is ΑΡΧΑΙΟΛΟΓΙΚΟΣ ΧΩΡΟΣ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΩΝ which means “Archaeological Site of Philippi,” while the second is the usual ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ.

In the center, there is the year of issue, while to the right is the classic Anthemion, the symbol of the Athens Mint. Surrounding the depicted subjects, we can see the twelve five-pointed stars symbolizing the countries of Europe arranged in a circle.

The reverse of the coin, the so-called Reverse, features the usual Common Side.

We return to a €2 Commemorative coin from Greece minted in honor of a historical figure. Specifically, this was minted in 2018 for the 75th Anniversary of the Death of Kostis Palamas, a Greek poet and journalist who wrote the text of the Olympic anthem.

On the Obverse, we can see the representation of Palamas's face with, on the left, the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ in an arch and the name ΚΩΣΤΗΣ ΠΑΛΑΜΑΣ. This is followed by the symbol of the Athens Mint, while on the right is the year of issue. In the outer circle, we can always see 12 stars, five-pointed, the European symbol.

Meanwhile, the Reverse, the other side of the coin, features the Common Side.

The next coin was minted in 2018 to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the union of the Dodecanese Islands with Greece.

On the Obverse of the 2 euro Greece 2018, we can see a depiction of a rose, the symbol of Rhodes, which appears on an ancient coin found in the ancient city of Rhodes. This is surrounded by stylized waves.
At the top, the inscription 1948-2018 Η ΕΝΩΣΗ ΤΩΝ ΔΩΔΕΚΑΝΗΣΩΝ ΜΕ ΤΗΝ ΕΛΛΑΔΑ translates to 1948-2018 UNION OF THE DODECANES WITH GREECE.

At the bottom in an arc is the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ while to the left is the symbol of the Athens Mint.

Along the nickel crown, the outer part of the bimetallic coin, the 12 stars of the European Union are arranged in a circle.

Another €2 Commemorative coin from Greece minted in honor of a historical figure. Specifically, this €2 coin was minted in 2019 for the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Manolis Andronikos, a renowned Greek archaeologist known for numerous discoveries, including the tomb of Philip II of Macedonia, father of Alexander the Great.

On the right, we can see the inscription in an arc ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ while on the left is Μανώλης Ανδρόνικος 1919 – 1992 followed by the year of issue and the symbol of the Athens Mint. Surrounding the bimetallic coin are the European states represented by the 12 five-pointed stars.

The Reverse: Common Side

Finally, the last coin of this wonderful collection. In particular, the €2 commemorative coin from Greece was minted in 2019 in honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Death of Andreas Kalvos, the famous Greek poet.

On the Obverse of the 2 euro Greece 2019, we indeed find the representation of Kalvos's face. Arched to the right is the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ while to the left is Ανδρέας Κάλβος 1792 – 1869. Also to the left, we can notice the symbol of the Athens Mint and the year of issue, which is 2019.
As usual, the classic 12 five-pointed stars representing European States are depicted around the edge.

The Common Side constitutes the Reverse of the coin, that is, the side opposite to the National Side.

This is the €2 Greece 2020 coin, minted to commemorate the 2500th Anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae. Issued on 30/06/2020.

On the National Side, the Obverse features a full helmet covering the head and neck, leaving only the eyes and mouth exposed, topped with a horsehair plume, a typical Corinthian Helmet (In Ancient Greek κόρυς κορινθίη) facing left and signed at the bottom by George Stamatopoulos. Also on the left, the minting year 2020 is inscribed along with the symbol of the Athens Mint.

Arched along the entire upper half is the inscription in uppercase “2500 XPONIA AΠO TH MAXH TΩN ΘEHMOPYΛΩN”, meaning 2500 years since the Battle of Thermopylae, followed in the lower half by “ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ” (Hellenic Republic). A circular Greek pattern separates the inscriptions from the design.
In the outer ring of the coin, made of nickel and copper, stylized European countries are arranged in a circle, each represented by a 5-pointed star.

The Reverse is the Common Side of the €2 coins.

The other commemorative bimetallic coin of 2020 is dedicated to the centenary of the Union of Thrace to Greece. Issued on 16/07/2020.

Let's move to the Obverse and the description of the National Side that explicitly recalls an ancient Greek coin. It is indeed a reinterpretation of an ancient Stater.
The main figure is a winged griffin with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion. The reference to the ancient coin is also given by the irregular shape underlying the legendary creature, a typical form of coins from that period.

In the upper half, in a circle, “100 XPONIA AΠO THN ENΣΩMATΩΣH THΣ ΘRAKHΣ” preceded by the symbol of the Athens Mint, while in the lower part appears the inscription “ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ” 2020 (100 years since the incorporation of Thrace into Greece – Hellenic Democracy – 2020)
On the outer edge, on the copper and nickel part, the 12 stars form a circle like the symbol of European countries.

The Common Side is on the Reverse of the coin and is the same as the reverse of the 2 euro coins.

Here is the Greek Commemorative coin of 2021, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution. Minted on 22/04/2021

On the Obverse, at the center of the coin, there is a circle containing the Greek flag, surrounded by a laurel wreath arranged in symmetrical branches.
Encircling the upper part of the coin is the inscription 1821 – 2021 200 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΕΠΑΝΑΣΤΑΣΗ, while at the bottom is ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ, which translates to 200 YEARS SINCE THE GREEK REVOLUTION and HELLENIC REPUBLIC.

At the center bottom, the symbol of the Athens Mint is engraved, a stylized Anthemion flower, just above the monogram of the designer George Stamatopoulos.
Surrounding it, in the nickel part, are the 12 European stars engraved.

The Reverse features the Common Side of commemorative coins and the 2 euro coins.

The €2 Commemorative Greece 2022 First Greek Constitution coin is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the first Greek Constitution. Issued on 1/07/2022

On the Obverse of the coin, centrally, is the ancient Greek healing temple Asklepieion, in front of the temple stands the statue of Asklepios, a demigod trained in medicine, above is inscribed the text ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ, below TO ΠPΩTO ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚO ΣYΝTAΓMA.

On the left, the date 1822 is inscribed and on the right the date 2022, the signature of the author George Stamatopoulos is the monogram engraved at the bottom right, beneath the base of the Sanctuary. Instead, Anthemion, the symbol of the Athens Mint, is engraved in the form of a stylized flower at the center bottom. Surrounding it are the 12 stars of the European Union.

The commemorative coin 2 Euro Commemorative Greece 2022 Erasmus is dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus Program (European Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students). Issued in all Eurozone countries. Release date 1/7/2022

Indeed, the “Erasmus Program” was born in 1987 from the intuition of educator Sofia Corradi, and her collaboration with Domenico Lenarduzzi helped create the conditions for launching this ambitious “Student Exchange Project across Europe.” The name is dedicated to Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam, who was a Humanist, Philosopher, and Theologian, as well as the author of The Praise of Folly.

On the Obverse of the coin, there is a depiction of Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam facing left, writing his essay. Above his right hand is the signature of the designer Joaquin Jimenez JJ. In the background, a series of intertwined bands form the number 35. At the bottom right, the inscription 1987-2022 EURASMUS PROGRAMME ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ, and Anthemion, the symbol of the Athens Mint, is engraved.

On the outer part, the 12 stars symbolizing the European Union are distributed.

The Reverse features the nominal value of the 2 EURO coins.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Greece 2023 Maria Callas coin was minted to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Greek soprano Maria Anna Cecilia Sofia Kalos, known as Maria Callas. Issued on 27/06/2023

On the Obverse, there is a profile portrait of Maria Callas facing right, with the signature ΣTAM of the artist George Stamatopoulos engraved behind her shoulders. At the top of the coin, the inscription 100 XPONIA AΠO ΓENNHΣH THΣ MAPIAΣ KAΛΛAΣ is featured, while at the bottom, ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ is inscribed. The year of issue 2023 is located on the right side of the coin, below the Anthemion, the symbol of the Athens Mint.

Surrounding the coin are the 12 stars of the European Union.

On the Reverse, the common side of the €2 coin.

The €2 commemorative coin Greece 2023 Constantin Carathéodory is issued to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Greek mathematician Constantin Carathéodory, known for his work on “calculus of variations” and “measure theory.” Issued on 28/10/2023

On the Obverse, there is a profile of Constantin Carathéodory facing left, where a mathematical formula is inscribed. The signature of the author Georges Stamatopoulos appears on the shoulder of the portrait to the right. To the left of the coin, the inscription ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΣ ΚΑΡΑΘΕΟΔΩΡΗ 1873-1950 is present, while at the bottom, the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ is found. To the right, there is the Anthemion, the symbol of the Athens Mint, along with the year 2023. Surrounding the outer perimeter of the coin are the twelve stars of the European symbol.

The Reverse features the Common Side of the €2 coins.

The “2 Euro Commemorative Greece 2024 Return to Democracy” will be issued for the 50th Anniversary of the restoration of Democracy in Greece. The coin will be issued in 2024.

Historical notes: The restoration of democracy in Greece occurred in July 1974, marking a turning point in modern Greek political history. When the old military regime that had ruled the country since 1967 collapsed, a transition period began that saw the formation of a National Unity government under the careful guidance of Konstantinos Karamanlis. Karamanlis had served as Prime Minister both in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The National Unity government during these years made several important decisions, organizing free parliamentary elections for the election of a constitutional assembly, calling for a referendum on the monarchy issue, and legalizing the Communist Party (KKE), which had been considered illegal since its formation.

The design of the Obverse is not yet known.

On the Reverse will be the Common Side of the 2 EURO coins.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Greece 2024 Penelope Delta has been issued to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Greek writer Penelope Delta.
Penelope Delta was a highly esteemed and appreciated Greek writer, especially known for her contributions to children's and youth literature. Her well-known historical novels influenced the modern Greek popular perception of national identity and history. Delta was also actively involved in Greek politics in the early 20th century, participating in both the Macedonian struggle and the national schism.
