History of the 500 lire coins of the Republic of San Marino
The bimetallic 500 lire coins of San Marino also began to be minted in 1982, but unlike those of the Italian Republic, the ones from San Marino change on both the obverse and reverse each year.
All bimetallic 500 lire coins from San Marino were minted for circulation and distributed in rolls, except for those from the years 1994, 1997, 2000, and 2001, which were issued only as “FDC Divisional”.

The first of the bimetallic 500 lire coins from San Marino was minted in 1982 and is dedicated to the FAO, the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations).

On the obverse, in the center, the three feathered towers are depicted with the signature of the author Laura Cretara, who also created the obverse of the Italian bimetallic 500 lire.
The outer crown is divided into two concentric parts. The inner part, with an outline resembling the wheel of a sailing ship's helm, bears the inscription “LIBERTAS PERPETUA” while the outer part reads “REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO”.
Also on the reverse of these 500 lire, the acmonital crown is divided into two. In the inner part, which resembles the wheel of a helm, it reads “BUSCAR EL LEVANTE POR EL PONIENTE”, while on the outside “DISCOVERY OF AMERICA” and the dates 1492 – 1992 with the value L.500.

If you expect to see on these 500 lire from San Marino of 1994 a most happy woman laughing, I have some bad news for you…
In fact, Felicissima was the widow who owned the land on which Mount Titano stands, where Marino had retreated.
According to legend, Felicissima's son protested against Marino's presence, who prayed to the Lord to keep him at bay.
He then fell to the ground paralyzed.
Donna Felicissima then asked forgiveness from the saint and gave him a plot of land on Mount Titano.

In 1995, the 50th anniversary of the founding of the FAO, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, was celebrated, and San Marino dedicated the 500 lire minted that year to this anniversary.

On the central disc of these 500 lire from 1995, on the obverse, the three feathers of the towers of San Marino appear, wrapped in three loops of a ribbon that bears the inscription “LIBERTAS”.
Also on the outer crown, a ribbon is visible that bears the inscription “REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO”. To the right of the knot of the ribbon is the signature of the author Loredana Pancotto and outside the ribbon, the signature of the engraver Ettore Lorenzo Frapiccini.
On the reverse, in the center, a child cultivating an ear of wheat is depicted with the mint mark R on the right and the minting year 1995 on the left. Project 1996/1999
Before discussing the bimetallic 500 Lire of San Marino from 1996, it is necessary to make a preamble:
Starting from 1996 to 2000, the Republic of San Marino minted its 500 lire following a project articulated on 5 major themes. This project aims to bring back on the coins, a good that is preserved over time, the milestones and most significant progress of humanity to pass them on to future generations.
For this reason, these four coins share the same design on the Obverse, namely the Earth holding a flame in its hands.
- For the first year, in 1996, the theme was “man and philosophical and dogmatic thought”, and the 500 lire were dedicated to Hegel, the philosopher most representative of the German idealism philosophical current.
- The second year, 1997, the theme was “man and artistic expression” expressed through Music.
- In 1998, the third year, the chosen theme is “Man and Science”, in this case Chemistry.
- The fourth theme, in 1999, “man and the exploration of his world” and the depicted image is that of the Today's Sky.
- “Towards the third millennium” is the fifth theme of 2000, with Work as the subject.
But let's start with the first protagonist of this small numismatic project.
500 Lire San Marino 1996 – “Hegel”

On the obverse, in the center, there is a human bust, representing the planet Earth, holding a flame in its hands.
Around the head, various celestial bodies can be seen such as the Moon, Saturn, and some stars.
Below the bust, the signatures of the two authors of the obverse, Giovanni Giulianelli and F. Filanci, are inscribed.
On the outer circle, the inscription “REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO” is interspersed with a pair of small depictions of the three towers of San Marino with the inscription “LIBERTAS” on a scroll.
The reverse of these 500 lire of San Marino, as we said dedicated to Hegel, features a portrait of the philosopher inscribed in a triangle with a vertex pointing downwards, representing his philosophical doctrine.
Immediately to the right of the triangle is the signature of the reverse author, Renka. On the left, on the outer crown, is the R mint mark of Rome and the signature of the engraver Ettore Lorenzo Frapiccini, while to the right is the minting year 1996.
At the top, the value L.500 is inscribed, and at the bottom, the name of the philosopher “HEGEL”.

For the 500 lire coins of 1997, the theme was “man and artistic expression”, specifically Music.
The 500 lire of 1997 were released only as FDC Divisional, like those of 1994, 2000, and 2001.

The obverse of these 500 lire from 1997 does not change from that of the previous year. Indeed, we see the human bust representing the Earth holding a flame surrounded by celestial bodies.
On the reverse, however, in the central part, a flute player is depicted. The flute was an ancient musical instrument made of bone, and this composition is taken from a Greek vase from the 5th century BC.
On the outer crown, “MUSICA” and the value L.500 are inscribed. At the top right, the year 1997 and the signature of the author Galea Bason appear, while at the bottom left is the mint mark and the signature of the engraver “FRAPICCINI INC.”.

- Are you ready to hear that the 500 bimetallic lire of San Marino dedicated to Music in 1997 are not rare and are worth €2? Well, this time it’s not so!
Having a mintage of only 28,000 pieces as FDC Divisional, it is certainly the rare coin among the 500 Lire of San Marino, classified as common, but certainly rarer than many of the other 500 lire, and indeed its value is significantly higher.
How much are they worth? If in FDC condition, these 500 lire from 1997 of San Marino are worth almost €20!
However, it is not the rarest coin; later we will see one that truly enters among the rare coins of the Republic of San Marino.

Value 500 Lire Republic of San Marino 2000
Finally, we have arrived at the 500 lire of San Marino Bimetallic from 2000 minted and dedicated to Work, which currently reaches the highest value!
These coins from 2000 were minted with a mintage of 28,000 pieces and only as FDC Divisional. They are therefore significantly rarer than the others, and if in uncirculated condition, their value is decidedly higher. How much are the 500 lire of San Marino from 2000 worth? 500 Lire San Marino 2001 – “1700th foundation of the Republic”
We have now reached the last 500 lire coin of the Republic of San Marino, those from the year 2001. These 500 lire celebrate the 1700 years since the foundation, by San Marino in 301 AD according to legend, of the Serene Republic of San Marino.
Description 500 Lire San Marino 2001 “Love”
On the obverse of the 500 lire of San Marino from 2001, the three feathered towers of the Republic rise again. On the outer crown, we see the inscription “REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO” interspersed with a branch of myrtle, one of oak, and one of olive. Myrtle, wheat, and olive are indeed recognized as symbols of friendship, work, and peace, and together represent the allegory of Love.
At the bottom, above the inscription, the signature of the author Uliana Pernazza is inscribed.
On the reverse, the central part is occupied by three intertwined twigs of olive, wheat, and myrtle, which represent Peace, Work, and Friendship.
Below the design is the inscription “LIRE” which dominates the 500 inscribed on the outer crown.
To the right of the value is the mint mark R of the Rome mint, and higher up the minting year 2001 under which is the inscription “1700 d.F.R.”.

- These last 500 lire minted by the Republic of San Marino in 2001 dedicated to the 1700 years since the foundation of the Republic, were issued only as FDC Divisional, and only 30,000 pieces were minted.
They are not classified as rare; however, being still less common than many of the other 500 lire of San Marino, they can reach a value of around €20! Not rare but quite interesting.
