Since 1974, the Italian Republic has issued numerous 500 Lire Commemorative Silver coins, and in this article, we analyze all of them in detail.

The 500 Lire Commemorative Silver coins are all made of 835 silver, weighing 11 grams and having a diameter of 29 millimeters with a raised edge. Starting from 1991, 500 Lire commemorative coins were also minted weighing 15 grams and with a diameter of 32 millimeters.

The minting of 500 Lire Commemorative Silver coins ended in 1993.

In 1974, on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Guglielmo Marconi, the first 500 Lire Commemorative Silver was issued.

On the Reverse, the Italian territory is represented, topped by concentric circles symbolizing radio waves. At the top, it reads GVGLIELMO MARCONI, while the value L. 500 and the mint mark R are positioned to the left and right of the central design, respectively. At the bottom, the two dates of the centenary “1874 – 1974” are inscribed.

On the edge of the coin, REPUBBLICA ITALIANA is embossed. This 500 Lire Commemorative Silver was also issued in PROOF versions.

On the Obverse, therefore, according to the issuance decree of March 15, 1993, the portrait of Horace is depicted facing left with a bird feather on the right. The signature of the author Maurizio Soccorsi is found small on the right, and around it reads HORATIUS.

On the Reverse, there is a capitol in “Corinthian” style, adorned with acanthus leaves. On the right, the inscription VT PICTVRA POESIS is displayed, a quote from the Ars poetica, below which is the value L 500.
On the left, the mint mark R and the year 1993 are found, and around it, the inscription REPVBBLICA ITALIANA.

On the Edge, the inscription BIMILLENARIO HORATIAN is in relief.
