The obverse depicts one of Raphael’s earliest paintings, namely the detail of the ‘Madonna di casa Santi’. This painting is in the Raphael Academy in Urbino, originally the artist’s home.

In the centre, on the obverse side, there is a depiction of a detail of the painting made by Dürer in Nuremberg in 1526, ‘The Virgin of the Pear’, with Dürer’s monogram AD at the top and the signature of the author Valerio de Seta V d S at the bottom.
Under the Virgin and Child are the dates 1471 – 2021, on the left the inscription SAN MARINO with the mint mark R, and on the right DÜRER. Around it are the twelve stars of the European Union.
On the reverse is the common face of the coin and the value of the 2€.
