2 Euro Commemorative Estonia

The very first 2 Euro Commemorative coin from Estonia was minted in 2012 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Euro banknotes and coins. This coin is common to all European States, differing only by the name of the State inscribed on it.

On the National Side of the Obverse, we can observe a beautiful representation of the European Flag perfectly centered on the coin. Surrounding it are 12 stylized human figures representing the member states and, more generally, the citizens of Europe, united to establish a new and better Europe.

On the Obverse, we can observe a very significant design. It features a tree, specifically an oak, which represents the winding path of the State to achieve Independence. It is important to note that the oak has bare branches on one side and full, leafy branches on the other.

Below the bare area, the date 1917 is engraved, and metaphorically, these empty branches represent the situation of the Country before independence. Below the leafy area, the inscription “EESTI” and the year “2017” are present. This area naturally represents the strength and rebirth of the Country.

Not coincidentally, oak leaves are also present on the coat of arms of the Republic of Estonia. Finally, at the bottom, the inscription “MAAPÄEV” is engraved. Surrounding the coin are the 12 five-pointed stars representing European Countries.

This discovery was made by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen, an explorer and officer of the Russian navy, who, during an expedition to circumnavigate the globe, landed on the shores of Antarctica.

On the Obverse, we can see a beautiful representation of the Vostok Caravel with the inscription “Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen” arched above. This is a treaty signed by Estonia and the Soviet Union on February 2, 1920, after the end of the Estonian War of Independence.

On the Obverse of the Estonian €2 coin, we can indeed observe a tree with two incredibly significant words engraved on its branches. At the top is “TARTU” while at the bottom is “RAHU,” which means “PEACE.”

A particularity of this coin is that the design was modified after the approval of the European Commission, as it resembled too closely the identifying logo of the Grey Wolves, a known extremist association in Turkey.
Indeed, the first draft was approved but was promptly modified after the complaint from Rudolf Diephuis (German Collector and Numismatist).

The 2 Euro Estonia 2022 Estonian Literary Society coin was minted by Eesti Pank to celebrate the 150 Years of the Estonian Literary Society.

In 1872, a group of Estonian intellectuals founded the Estonian Literary Society, an association of writers aimed at promoting culture and literature in the Estonian language. The society published books, magazines, and newspapers in Estonian, and organized cultural events to promote the Estonian language and culture. The Literary Society was closed in 1893, but its work had a lasting impact on Estonian culture. The society helped preserve the Estonian language, which was threatened by foreign domination. It also contributed to promoting Estonian national identity and helped create a modern Estonian culture. The coin was issued on 9/03/2022.

On the Obverse, the design by Riho Luuse features an open book with the first page printed with a phrase from the first president of the Writers' Society, Jakob Hurda. The inscribed phrase is KUI ME EI SAA SUUREKS RAHVAARVULT PEAME SAAMA SUUREKS VAIMULT, which means “IF WE CANNOT BECOME GREAT IN NUMBER, WE MUST BECOME GREAT IN SPIRIT.”

In 2022, the 2 Euro Commemorative Estonia 2022 Erasmus Program was also minted, as in all other Eurozone countries.

It is dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Erasmus Program (European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students). The Erasmus Program was established on June 15, 1987 and is named after the Dutch theologian and humanist Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam, who traveled throughout Europe to learn about its diverse cultures. The Obverse of the coin features the portrait of Erasmus of Rotterdam engaged in writing his most famous work “The Praise of Folly”, with a background of interwoven links highlighting the number 35. The intertwined lines symbolize the numerous movements of students and the interconnections between various countries. At the bottom right, the inscription 1987-2022 ERASMUS PROGRAM EESTI is engraved in four lines.

The signature of the designer Joaquin Jimenez JJ is engraved above Erasmus's right hand, while the 12 stars of the European Union are distributed around.

The Reverse displays the value of the 2 EURO coin.

The 2 Euro Estonia 2022 Slava Ukraini commemorative coin is dedicated to the people of Ukraine who are fighting for their freedom. The winning design of the competition was created by Daria Titova, a young woman from Kharkiv who is a refugee in Estonia studying at the Academy of Fine Arts. The coin was issued on 08/07/2022.

On the Obverse of the coin, there is a symbolic stylization of a girl protecting a little bird in her hand, with wheat ears on the right symbolizing wealth and prosperity, as well as being a symbol of Ukraine. At the top left is the motto of Ukraine SLAVA UKRAINI (Glory to Ukraine), while at the bottom is the inscription EESTI 2022. Surrounding it are the twelve five-pointed stars of Europe.

The 2 Euro Commemorative Estonia 2023 The Swallow is dedicated to the national bird of Estonia, the Swallow. The coin was issued on 12/05/2023.

On the Obverse side of the coin, there is a design of a swallow in flight in the foreground and in the background two swallows on a power line. At the bottom right, the inscription EESTI 2023 is engraved, while at the top right HIRUNDO RUSTICA is displayed. Surrounding it are the stars of the European logo.

The Reverse side of the commemorative coin is that of the standard 2 Euro coins.

The 2 Euro 2024 Estonia coin is dedicated to the Cornflower, which has been the national flower of Estonia since 1969 and symbolizes the daily bread for the Estonian people. Issued in 2024

The design, created by the Estonian Central Bank competition winner Kaupo Kangro, features on the Obverse an elegant depiction of two cornflowers on a meadow with delicate blades of grass intertwining. At the top left of the coin, the inscription CENTAUREA CYANUS appears, while at the bottom center, the inscription EESTI 2024 is displayed on two lines.
