Slovakia Euro Coins

Before doing this, it is good to take a small step back to understand how Slovakia came to the European Single Currency. As is well known, Slovakia was part of the larger state of Czechoslovakia along with the Czech Republic before becoming an independent state.

The official currency of that period was the Czechoslovak Crown, which replaced the Austro-Hungarian crown, the official currency of Austria-Hungary, on April 10, 1919.

This currency was used regularly for 20 years until 1939 and from November 1, 1945, until February 7, 1993.

On February 8, 1993, the Slovak Crown was introduced. This occurred naturally after Czechoslovakia was officially dissolved, giving rise to the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Specifically, one crown was made up of 100 Heller or cents.

The Slovak crown was used until 2008, specifically until December 31.
From January 1, 2009, it was completely replaced by the Euro.

In particular, the exchange rate was set at 30.1260 Crowns for 1 Euro.

Now that we have made this brief but necessary introduction, we can explore the various Slovak Euro coins to analyze their characteristics and peculiarities. Throughout our journey, we will focus on the subjects depicted on each coin, the meanings they hold, as well as more technical peculiarities such as materials, dimensions, and weight.

Without further ado, let’s discover the Slovak Euro coins.

The first coin we will analyze is naturally the 1 Euro Cent Slovakia. The author of this specific coin is Drahomìr Zobek.

On the Obverse, we can notice a wonderful representation of Mount Krivàn seen from below. Immediately below is the inscription “SLOVENSKO” which indeed means Slovakia.

Even further down, we can see the year of minting with the coat of arms of Slovakia placed between the mint mark and the initials of the author. All around are the characteristic 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the coin is identical to any other 1 Euro Cent coin.

But let's move on to the technical specifications:

Let’s move immediately to the next coin, which is the 2 Euro Cents Slovakia. In this case, the author is the same, namely Drahomìr Zobek.

On the Obverse, we can notice the wonderful depiction of Mount Krìvan, part of the Tatra Mountains, viewed from below. Just below, we find the inscription “SLOVENSKO,” which means Slovakia.

Further down, there is the year of minting and below it, the coat of arms of the State. Specifically, this is placed between the mint mark and the initial “Z” of the author. All around, we find the classic 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the coin features the same design as the other 2 Euro Cents European coins, depicting Europe.

Now let’s look at the technical specifications:

The next coin is naturally the 5 Euro Cents Slovakia. In particular, the author remains the same, namely Drahomìr Zobek.

On the Obverse, we can also see the representation of Mount Krivàn from the Tatra mountain range. At the bottom, there is the inscription “SLOVENSKO” which means Slovakia, and a little further down, the year of minting.

Even further down, we find the coat of arms of Slovakia, which is placed between the mint mark on the left and the author's signature “Z” on the right. All around, as usual, we can see the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the coin is identical to the others.

Let's move on to the technical specifications.

Let's move on to the next coin, namely the 10 Euro Cents Slovakia. In this case, the authors change, and more specifically, we are talking about two new authors, Jàn Cernaj and Pavol Kàroly.

On the Obverse, the coin features a representation of the beautiful Bratislava Castle. In the center, reading from left to right, we can notice the mint mark, the coat of arms of Slovakia, the year of minting, and finally the initials of the two authors.

Immediately below, we find the arching inscription “SLOVENSKO,” which means Slovakia. All around, we have the usual 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states, while on the Reverse, the coin appears practically identical to all the other 10 Euro Cents.

Now let's look at the technical specifications.

Let's move on to the next coin, which is the 20 Euro Cents Slovakia. In this case, the authors are Jàn Cernaj and Pavol Kàroly.

On the Obverse, we again find the representation of the Bratislava Castle. Just below, reading from left to right, we can notice the mint mark followed by the coat of arms of the State.
Even further to the left are the year of minting and the initials of the two authors.

Located at the bottom, we find the inscription “SLOVENSKO,” which means Slovakia in the local language. Surrounding it, as with every Euro coin, are the 12 stars representing the member states of the European Union.

On the Reverse, the coin features the same face as the others.

We now arrive at the 50 Cents Euro Slovakia coin. The authors remain the same for this coin, namely Jàn Cernaj and Pavol Kàroly.

On the Obverse, the coin features the depiction of the Bratislava Castle. Just below, from right to left, we find the initials of the authors, the year of minting, and respectively the coat of arms of Slovakia followed by the mint mark.

Even lower is the inscription “SLOVENSKO,” which in the local language means the name of the State. Surrounding the coin are 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the coin has the same face as all other 20 Cents European coins.

Now let's look at the technical specifications.

We have reached the penultimate coin of this collection, namely the 1 Euro Slovakia coin. For this coin, the designer changes to Ivan Rehàk.

On the Obverse, we can indeed see prominently engraved the symbol of Slovakia characterized by a patriarchal cross placed on the three peaks of the Carpathian Mountains, namely: Tatra, Matra, and Fatrasulle.

At the bottom left, the year of minting and the mint mark are located. On the bottom right, we find the initials of the designer and the inscription “SLOVENSKO,” which means Slovakia.
As always, we can see the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states surrounding the design.

On the Reverse, the coin features the same face as the other 1 Euro coins.

Now let’s look at the technical specifications.
