Andorra Euro Coins

In this regard, it is essential to understand that the Principality of Andorra, since its foundation in 1278, has been, after various disputes, partly French and partly Spanish.

This has essentially led the principality to use partly the French currency, namely the Franc, and partly the Spanish currency, thus the Pesetas.

In 1977, the “Diners” were minted, considered the only typical Andorran coin, although used only for collector purposes.

From 1999 onwards, after the entry of France and Spain into the European Union, the Principality of Andorra, by virtue of agreements with these states, switched to the Euro.

Specifically, the Euro coin was authorized to circulate, based on the agreements made, from July 1, 2013, although the Andorran Ministry of Finance decided to postpone its release to 2014.

After this brief but necessary introduction, let us analyze individually all the Andorran coins in Euro.

The first coin we will analyze is naturally the 1 Euro Cent Andorran. In particular, this specific coin was created by the author Ruben da Silva Carpio.

On the Obverse, we can see the Pyrenean chamois printed in the center, accompanied at the top by the bearded vulture, a bird of prey. To the left, the word “ANDORRA” is prominently displayed with the year of minting just below it.
All around, we can notice the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, we can find the classic face of all 1 Euro Cent coins.

1 Euro Cent Andorra

• Materials: The material used for this coin is copper-plated steel. Specifically, the steel makes up 94.35% while the copper accounts for 5.65%.
• Thickness: The thickness is 1.67 mm

• Diameter: The diameter is 16.25 mm
• Edge: The edge is completely smooth and has no additional details.

Let's move on to the next coin, namely the 2 Euro Cents of Andorra. In this case, the author is Ruben da Silva Carpio.

On the Obverse, we find the representation of the Pyrenean chamois and the bearded vulture, a bird of prey, positioned in flight at the top. To the left, we can see the year of minting and the inscription “ANDORRA”.
Surrounding it, as with any European coin, are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the design is the classic one found on other 2 Euro Cents coins.

Now, let's discover the technical specifications of this specific coin.

2 Euro Cents Andorra

• Materials: For this coin, the material used is copper-plated steel. The steel makes up 94.35% while the copper accounts for 5.65%.
• Thickness: The thickness is also the same, which is 1.67 mm
• Weight: The weight is 3.06 g
• Diameter: The diameter is 18.75 mm
• Edge: The edge is characterized by a horizontal line in incuse
• Engraver: Ruben da Silva Carpio

Let's jump straight to the next coin, namely the 5 Euro Cents Andorra. The author of this third coin is also Ruben da Silva Carpio.

On the Obverse, the coin features the depiction of the Pyrenean chamois at the bottom while above it is the bearded vulture, a bird of prey, in flight.
On the left, we can see the year of minting and the inscription “ANDORRA”.
Surrounding it are the usual 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the face is the same as the other 5 Euro Cents coins, the common side.

However, let's take a closer look at the technical specifications of this specific coin.

• Materials: Once again, the material is copper-plated steel. In this case, the steel constitutes 94.35% while the copper makes up 5.65%.
• Thickness: The thickness remains at 1.67 mm
• Weight: The weight slightly increases to 3.92g
• Diameter: The diameter is 21.25 mm
• Edge: The edge is completely smooth

Now let's move on to the 10 Euro Cents Andorra coin. For this coin, the designer changes to Pere Moles.

On the Obverse, we find the representation of the church of Santa Coloma, a village located near the Valira river, 2 km from the capital.

On the right, we see the year of minting and the inscription “ANDORRA”. Surrounding it, as usual, are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the member states of the European Union.

On the Reverse, however, the face is the common one depicting Europe.

• Materials: The material used for this coin is Nordic Gold, consisting of 89% copper, 5% aluminum, 5% zinc, and 1% tin.
• Thickness: The thickness increases to 1.93 mm.
• Weight: The weight also increases, reaching 4.10 g.
• Diameter: The diameter is 19.75 mm.
• Edge: The edge is reeded with a thick milling.
• Engraver: Pere Moles

The next coin to analyze is the 20 Cents Euro Andorra. The author is the same, namely Pere Moles.

On the Obverse, we again find the representation of the church of Santa Coloma. To the right is the year of minting followed by the large inscription “ANDORRA”.

All around, we can find the usual 12 five-pointed stars symbolizing the countries of the European Union.

The Reverse is identical to all other 20 Cents coins, featuring the representation of Europe in the world.

What interests us, however, is also understanding the technical characteristics of this coin.

• Materials: The material used is once again Nordic Gold, composed of 89% copper, 5% zinc, 5% aluminum, and 1% tin.
• Thickness: The thickness is 2.14 mm
• Weight: The weight significantly increases to 5.74 g
• Diameter: The diameter is 22.25 mm
• Edge: The edge is characterized by a wide reeding
• Engraver: Pere Moles

We have now arrived at the 50 Cents Euro Andorra. The author remains the same as the two previous coins, namely Pere Moles.

Indeed, on the Obverse, we find the representation of the church of Santa Coloma. On the right, you can notice the year of minting and the inscription in uppercase “ANDORRA”.

The entire design is surrounded by 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, we can see the same face as the other 50 Cents European coins, depicting Europe.

However, let's look at the technical specifications.

• Materials: The material for this coin continues to be Nordic Gold (89% copper, 1% tin, 5% aluminum, and 5% zinc).
• Thickness: The thickness is 2.38 mm
• Weight: The weight significantly increases to 7.80 g
• Diameter: The diameter is 24.25 mm
• Edge: The edge is reeded with a thick milling
• Engraver: Pere Moles

Circulating coins are the coins that are used in everyday transactions. They are produced in large quantities and are available for public use.

Here we are at the penultimate coin of this collection. Specifically, we are talking about the 1 Euro Andorra coin created by the author Jordi Puy Segura.

On the Obverse, we find the representation of Casa de la Vall, the seat of the Consell General d’Andorra and the Palace of Justice.

At the bottom, there is the inscription “ANDORRA” in uppercase, followed below by the year of minting. As usual, the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states are present around the edge.

On the Reverse, it features the same face as the other 1 Euro coins.

Technical specifications:

• Materials: This coin is made of a dual material. The outer part is nickel-brass (75% copper – 20% zinc – 5% nickel) while the inner part is copper-nickel (75% copper – 25% nickel)
• Thickness: The thickness is 2.33 mm
• Weight: The weight slightly decreases to 7.50 g
• Diameter: The diameter is 23.25 mm
• Edge: The edge is discontinuously ridged
• Engraver: Jordi Puy Segura

Finally, we have arrived at the last coin of this collection, namely the 2 Euro Andorra. The author is also Jordi Puy Segura, although the subject is different from the previous one. If you can't find the 2 Euro Andorra coin you are looking for, it is probably among the 2 Euro commemorative coins of Andorra.

On the Obverse, we find the Coat of Arms of Andorra with the Latin inscription “VIRTVS VNITA FORTIOR” below it.

On the right, we can see the year of minting and the inscription “ANDORRA”. Surrounding it, as usual, are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

On the Reverse, the face is the same as the other Andorran 2 Euro coins.

We conclude with an analysis of the technical characteristics of this coin.

• Materials: This coin also features a dual material. The inner part is made of nickel-brass (75% copper – 20% zinc – 5% nickel) while the outer part is made of copper-nickel (75% copper – 25% nickel).
• Thickness: The thickness is 2.20 mm.
• Weight: The weight significantly increases to 8.50 g.
• Diameter: The diameter also increases to 25.75 mm.
• Edge: The edge is finely milled with the motif “2” in relief, followed by two five-pointed stars and an inverted “2” alternately for six times.
• Engraver: Jordi Puy Segura

In 2013, when the issuance of the Euro in Andorra was authorized, before finalizing the design to be minted on Andorran coins from 2014 onwards, some sketches were created by the Andorran Mint.

The designs for the Euro coins were indeed the result of a national competition that concluded on April 16. They included wildlife, churches, and frescoes. All coins were also illustrated with the year 2014, which is the first year of issuance.
