Spain’s very first 2 Euro commemorative coin was minted in 2005 in honour of Don Quixote, a well-known fictional character famous for his futile fight against windmills.

The obverse of the 2 euro Spain 2005 coin features a faithful representation of Don Quixote wielding a spear with windmills in the background.

To the left is the inscription ESPAÑA with immediately below it the crowned M, the mint symbol. On the outer edge, at the bottom, is the year of mintage interspersed with one of the 12 stars. As with all Euro coins, there are in fact the stars that symbolise the European States.

On the obverse the coin shows the Common Face.

Spain’s second 2-euro commemorative coin is the one minted in 2007 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome.

In the centre of the National Face is the treaty signed by the founding states with the word Europa at the top and in the background a detail of the pavement, designed by Michelangelo, of Piazza del Campidoglio where the treaties were signed. At the bottom we can see the year of mintage and the inscription ESPAÑA, while at the top in an arched composition and placed on two lines is TRATADO DE ROMA, 50 ANOS.

On the outer edge are the twelve 5-pointed stars as the European emblem.

As for the reverse, it is interesting to note that this is the first coin minted by the Madrid Mint to bear the New Common Face, with the countries of Europe united without distances or borders.

Let’s move on to another very important coin in European history. Specifically, the 2 Euro commemorative coin of Spain in question was minted in 2009 for the 10th anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union. Commonly known as the EMU.

The obverse of the 2 euro Spain 2009 coin features a small man in primitive style standing next to the Euro, symbolising the evolution of the economy up to the single currency. The next Spanish 2 Euro Commemorative Coin was minted in 2010 and is dedicated to a historical monument. Specifically, the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, built between the 8th and 10th centuries. The Mosque is one of the most important examples of Islamic architecture in Europe, although over the years it has undergone many transformations until it was officially consecrated as a Christian Cathedral.

The obverse depicts one of the most characteristic features of the Cathedral, the famous “Forest of Columns”, made up of columns and arches. Yet another coin dedicated to a historical monument. Specifically, this 2 Euro Commemorative Coin of Spain was minted in 2012 to celebrate the beautiful Burgos Cathedral. It is a Gothic cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary and famous for its unique architecture and size.

The coin in question was minted in 2013 as a tribute to the Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial, which was built by Philip II as the residence and pantheon of the King of Spain. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

On the obverse side, we can see the representation of the Monastery, while at the top there is the arched inscription ESPAÑA.
