Slovakia’s first 2-euro commemorative coin was minted in 2009 to mark the 20th anniversary of 17 November 1989, a day that went down in history as the “Velvet Revolution”.

On this day, citizens marched by jingling bunches of keys in honour of freedom and democracy.

On the obverse, we can see a bell forming a bunch of keys. The inscription “SLOVENSKO 17. NOVEMBER SLOBODA DEMOKRACIA” “1989-2009” is engraved in an arc. To the lower right is the mint mark ‘MK’ (Mincovňa Kremnica) and the initials of the author.

On the outermost edge we can see the classic 12 five-pointed stars symbolising the European states.

The reverse side is common to all 2-euro coins.

The coin is included in two FDC Coincards.

The second coin in this collection is the Commemorative Slovakia 2 Euro Coin minted in 2009 to mark 10 years of Economic and Monetary Union (HMU).

On the obverse we can see a representation of a stylised primitive human figure with the Euro symbol next to it. This design stands for the euro (and therefore HMU) as the last step in human economic progress, from barter to single currency.

It should be noted that this design was chosen directly by European citizens through a poll.

Above in an arc is the inscription “SLOVENSKO” while to the left is the symbol of the Mint of Kremnica “MK” (Mincovňa Kremnica). At the bottom we can see the inscription “HMÚ 1999-2009”. (Hospodárskej a Menovej únie). All around the coin are the usual 12 five-pointed stars, representing the European countries.

As for the obverse, this is virtually identical to that of any other 2-euro coin, as it features the Common Face.

Let’s move on to the next 2 Euro commemorative coin of Slovakia, the third commemorative coin. This particular coin was minted in 2011 on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Visegard Group formed by Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary.

On the obverse we can see the representation of the maps of these states. Superimposed on the maps are the letters “VIV”, indicating the Visegard group.

On the lower left is the minting year ‘2011’ and on the lower right is the inscription ‘SLOVENSKO’ accompanied by the initials of the author and the symbol of the Mint of Kremnica ‘MK’ (Mincovňa Kremnica).

The words VYŠEHRADSKÁ SKUPINA – VISEGRAD GROUP’ ‘15.2.1991’ appear in an arc at the top. The coin’s outer ring features the classic 12 five-pointed stars representing the EU Member States.

Now the obverse, with its common face, is identical to that of any other 2-euro coin.

The fourth coin in this collection is a common piece in other European countries. Specifically, we are talking about the 2-euro commemorative coin of Slovakia, minted in 2012 on the occasion of 10 years of Euro banknotes and coins.

The obverse is engraved with a magnificent design depicting the Euro in the centre of the globe, indicating its importance for Europe. All around, various elements have been added to underline its centrality. For example, the ship represents trade, the factory represents industry, the people represent the people and the windmills symbolise energy.

It is important to point out that this design was chosen directly by European citizens through a poll.

Fifth Commemorative: We now move on to a coin of incredible historical and religious importance. Specifically, this 2-euro commemorative coin of Slovakia was minted in 2013 to mark the 1150th Anniversary of the mission of Constantine and Methodius to Great Moravia in 863 AD.

The coin’s obverse depicts Methodius and Constantine holding a double cross and the Gospel. Above this design, the words “KONŠTANTÍN METOD” are engraved in an arc, while the words “SLOVENSKO ● 863 ● 2013” appear at the bottom.

To the left are the initials of the author and to the right the symbol of the Mint of Kremnica ‘MK’ (Mincovňa Kremnica). The coin’s outer ring depicts, as usual, the 12 five-pointed stars representing the Member States of the European Union.

As usual, the reverso is identical to any 2-euro coin.

The next coin is extremely important for Slovakia and is the sixth commemorative coin to be minted. This 2-euro commemorative coin was indeed minted in 2014 in honour of the 10th Anniversary of the Slovak Republic’s accession to the EU.

On the obverse is the stylised inscription “EU” with the coat of arms of the Slovak Republic in the foreground. To the right is the date “1.5.2004”, i.e. the date of Slovakia’s accession, and the year “2014”. At the bottom in an arc is the inscription “SLOVENSKO” and on the left the symbol of the Mint of Kremnica “MK” (Mincovňa Kremnica).

The words ’10 VÝROČIE VSTUPUDO EURÓPSKEJ UNIE’ are inscribed in an arc at the top, while the initials of the author are engraved on the right. All around the coin are the 12 five-pointed stars that are present on all coins, indicating European states.

The obverse depicts the common face as on all 2-euro coins.

This time we are talking about a coin minted in honour of a historical figure, the seventh commemorative coin. Specifically, it is the 2-euro commemorative coin of Slovakia minted in 2015 to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ľudovít Štúr, Slovak linguist, poet and journalist.

The obverse depicts the portrait of Ľudovít Štúr, the inscription “SLOVENSKO” “2015” is engraved on the right in an arc, and the symbol of the Kremnica Mint “MK” (Mincovňa Kremnica) is at the top. At the bottom are the initials of the author and to the left in an arc the inscription “Ľudovít Štúr” “1815-1865”. All around the coin are the classic 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states.

For the eighth coin, we return to a very important coin common to all European countries. In particular the 2 Euro Commemorative coin minted in 2015 on the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the European Flag.

On the obverse, we can see a representation of the European flag in the centre with 12 stylised human figures around it, indicating European states united to create a new Europe. To the upper right is the inscription “SLOVENSKO” and the years “1985-2015”. On the right hand side, between the flag and the two dates, there is the symbol of the Mint of Kremnica ‘MK’ (Mincovňa Kremnica).

All around the coin are engraved the twelve five-pointed stars representing the European states.

The reverse side is no different from any other 2-euro coin with its common face.

The next coin, the ninth Slovak commemorative coin, which we are going to analyse was minted in 2016 to commemorate the Slovak Presidency in the Council of the European Union.

On the obverse we can see the coat of arms of the Slovak Republic in the centre of dynamic centripetal lines. The placement of the coat of arms is not accidental, as it indicates its centrality. To the right of the coat of arms is the year ‘2016’, and all around it the inscriptions ‘SLOVENSKO’ and ‘PREDSEDNÍCTVO SR V RADE EÚ’ (Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU).

At the bottom there is the symbol of the Mint of Kremnica ‘MK’ (Mincovňa Kremnica) and the initials of the author. The coin’s outer ring depicts the usual 12 five-pointed stars indicating the EU Member States.

As usual, the obverse of the coin features the classic face common to all 2-euro coins.

Let’s move on to the next coin. It is the 2 Euro Commemorative Coin of Slovakia minted in 2017 on the occasion of the 550th Anniversary of the founding of the Istropolitan University. The tenth coin.

As you can see. the coin’s obverse depicts a teacher and two seated students. In the background is the historic building of the University of Bratislava, while in the upper left corner is the founder of the University, Matthias Corvinus, in a small medallion.

The inscription ‘UNIVERZITA 1467 ISTROPOLITANA’ is engraved in an arc around the coin, with the inscription ‘SLOVENSKO 2017’ at the bottom and the symbol of the Mint of Kremnica ‘MK’ (Mincovňa Kremnica) to the left. The coin’s outer ring bears, as usual, the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European States.

As far as the reverso is concerned, this is represented by the Common Face.

Let’s move on to another very important coin in Slovakia’s history, the 11th coin. Specifically, this 2 Euro Commemorative Slovakia coin was minted in 2018 for the 25th Anniversary of the Constitution of the Slovak Republic.

On the obverse side we can see a representation of the map of Slovakia which passes through a portal with the Euro symbol at the top surrounded by the stars of the European Union (some of which are covered by the map).

This design is intended to represent the entry of the Slovak Republic into the EU and the euro area. The coat of arms of the Slovak Republic is also embossed on the left. The inscription ‘SLOVENSKÁ REPUBLIKA’ is engraved in a semicircle at the bottom left, while the symbol of the Mint of Kremnica ‘MK’ (Mincovňa Kremnica) and the initials of the author appear below the map.

At the bottom of the inscription is the date of incorporation of the Slovak Republic “1.1.1993” and the year of issue “2018”. On the outermost ring we can see, as usual, the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European countries.

This is the 2020 Commemorative of Slovakia, designed to mark the 20th Anniversary of Slovakia’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Issued 11/11/2020.

In fact, on the obverse of the National Face, inscribed in a square, is the inscription 20 VYROCIE VSTUP SR DO OECD. Below the square is the country and the minting year: SLOVENSKO 2020.

The circle intersecting the square is a symbol of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), a circle which becomes central in the co-ordination of operations between the various European nations, hence the brain-shaped stylisation. On the right below is the coat of arms of Slovakia. In the outer crown of this commemorative are stars, the symbol of European countries.

The Common Face is in the reverso of the commemorative coin.
