2 Euro 2004 Greece – Olympic Games Athens
Let’s start with the first Greek Commemorative 2 Euro Coins which is perhaps the best known, but still the least valuable one. I am referring to the one minted in 2004 on the occasion of the Olympic Games held in Athens that same year.
As we can see in the obverse, the coin shows perfectly placed in the center the representation of Mirone’s discobolus with on the left the five Olympic circles that are, as we know, the official symbol of the Olympics with the ATHENS 2004 written on it. On the right we can instead see the writing 2 EYPO which means 2 Euro. At the top is instead placed the Anthemion, a flower in stylized form that is none other than the symbol of the Mint of Athens.
Below we can find the thousandth of minting divided into two figures with the sixth star in the center. As for all the other coins around are evident the 12 stars that represent the European States.
On the reverse side the coin has the old common side, equal to the other 2 Euro coins. (The “old” Common Face i.e. the one that presents the map of the European countries with the defined borders)

2 Euro 2007 Greece – 50th Anniversary of the Treaties of Rome
Here we are to the next coin that was minted precisely in 2007 in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome.
At the Obverse we can see the representation of the Treaties signed by the six Member States surmounted at the top by the writing ΕΥΡΟΠΗ.
Lookin at the bottom there is a representation of the floor of Piazza del Campidoglio where the treaties were signed. At the top there is also the inscription ΣΥΝΘΗΚΗ ΤΗΣ ΡΩΜΗΣ, 50 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ. On the right is the Anthemion, a flower in stylized form, which is the symbol of the Athens Mint.
Below is the thousandth of minting with an arched inscription ΕΛΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ. Instead, the twelve stars representing the European countries are engraved along the outer part and distributed in a circle.
While with regard to the reverse it is interesting to note that this is the first coin minted by the Athens Mint to bear the New Common Face with the unified map of European countries.

Now it is the turn of the 2 Euro coin commemorative of Greece is the one minted in 2009 to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union.
The subject of this coin was chosen by European citizens through an online survey.
Specifically to the obverse we can see the symbol of the Euro with on the left the primitive design of a man who represents the human evolution up to the Euro. At the top we can see the arched inscription EΛΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ while on the right the symbol of the Athens Mint.At the bottom instead there is the writing ONE 1999 – 2009. In the outer ring of the coin, as for all coins, are distributed the 12 five-pointed stars.
To the reverse the coin shows the Common Face.

We come to a coin with a truly relevant historical importance. In particular this 2 Euro commemorative coin was minted in 2011 on the occasion of the XIII Edition of the Special Olympics. These are Olympic Games in which people with mental retardation and multiple disabilities compete. They differ from the Paraolimipiadi where people with physical disabilities participate.
At the obverse we can see a radiant sun with an olive branch in the center which, together, emphasize the power and excellence of the athletes participating in the Games. In the upper part we can see the words XIII SPECIAL OLYMPICS W.S.G.” and “ATHENS 2011” and in the lower part the words ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ. Between the two inscriptions we can see the symbol of the Athens Mint and all around the 12 five-pointed stars representing the States of the European Union.

Let’s move on to another commemorative 2 Euro coin from Greece for which an online survey was launched in which European citizens participated.
Specifically, this was coined in 2012 to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the putting into circulation of Euro Banknotes and Coins.
The subject represented in the Obverse contains several elements. The people who represent the importance of the Euro for the life of citizens, the ship that represents trade, the factory that represents industry and finally the wind turbines that represent energy.
At the top we find the classic inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ which means “HELLENIC REPUBLIC” and at the bottom the dates 2002 – 2012.
Around it as usual there are the 12 five-pointed stars symbol of the European States.
On the other side of the coin, the reverse, there is the common face.

Another coin of incredible historical importance is the one minted in 2013 to commemorate the 2400th Anniversary of the founding of the Platonic Academy.
On the right side of the Greel 2 Euro 2013 we can see a profile portrait of Plato with the inscription “2400 years since the founding of Plato’s Academy” and the classic ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ. On the right we can see the symbol of the Athens Mint with the thousandth mint.
As for all the coins around we can see the 12 5-pointed stars representing the European States.

The next coin to be analyzed is the one commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the official Union of Crete to Greece minted in 2013.
At the Obverse we can in fact observe the representation of Cretan warriors who symbolically raise the Greek Flag. On the upper side written in a circular manner we can see the words ΕΛΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ. At the bottom instead the inscription “100 years is union of Crete with Greece” and on the right the dates “1913 – 2013” with the symbol of the Mint of Athens.
In the external part of the coin we can notice the 12 five-pointed stars that represent the States of the European Union.
Instead, the Common Face is drawn in the reverse of the commemorative coin.

Another coin commemorating an important annexation to Greece is this bimetallic coin, minted in 2014. In particular it was made to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the union of the Ionian Islands with Greece.
At the Obverse of this 2 euro Greece 2014 we can see the representation of a seven-pointed star which bears the inscription 150 YEARS OF UNION BETWEEN THE IONIA ISLANDS (EPTÀNISA) AND GREECE – 1864-2014 – ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ with the symbol of the Athens Mint just below it. On the outer edge of the star, between one point and another, there are the symbols of the Ionian Islands while the whole is surrounded by the pattern of a wave.
As always the outermost part of the coin sees the 12 five-pointed stars representing the States of the European Union.
On the reverse side there is the common side which is identical for each 2 euro coin, including commemorative coins.

At the Obverse we can in fact notice the portrait of the artist El Greco with in the background an exemplifying representation of his technique and style. On the left we notice the thousandth of minting with the artist’s signature at the bottom, while on the right the symbol of the Athens Mint.

We find here another Greek Commemorative 2 Euro Coins minted in 2015 in honor of the Anniversary of the death of an important figure in Greek history. In particular this one was made for the 75th commemoration of the death of the famous Greek marathon runner Spyros Louis.
At the Obverse of the 2 euro Greece 2015, we can see a representation of the athlete Spyros Louis with the chalice that was assigned to him. In the background there is a representation of the Panathinaiko Stadium.
In the upper left corner there is ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ and in the lower left corner the 75 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΜΝΗΜΗΣ ΣΠΥΡΟΥ ΛΟΥΗ. The next Greek Commemorative 2 Euro Coins was minted in 2016 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Holocaust of Arkadi Monastery.
This structure, the Monastery of Arkadi, was the protagonist of a painful event in the Cretan revolution against the Ottoman domination:
In 1866 943 Cretans (mostly women and children) took refuge from the Ottomans inside the monastery. After three days of battle they decided to blow themselves up with barrels of explosive powder rather than surrender. This episode was not decisive for the battle but certainly drew the attention of the whole world to the Cretan situation.
On the obverse side of this coin we can immediately see the representation of the Arkadi Monastery, on the left the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ and on the right the thousandth of minting. Below the Monastery is the inscription ΜΟΝΗ ΑΡΚΑΔΙΟΥ with the symbol of the Athens Mint even lower. All around, on the outer crown of the bimetallic coin, we can see the twelve five-pointed stars, symbol of the European States.

The 2 Euro Greece Commemorative Coin that we are going to analyze now is the coin minted in 2016 in honor of the 120th Anniversary of the birth of Dimitri Mitropoulos famous Greek composer and conductor.
At the Obverse we can see the portrait of the artist on a background of musical notes. On the left are engraved in arches the inscriptions 120° ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗ ΓΕΝΝΗΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΗ ΜΗΤΡΟΠΟΥΛΟΥ and ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ. On the obverse we can immediately notice the representation of the Kazantzakis bust in profile. On the left is the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ followed by the name Nikos Kazantzakis. At the top is the year of issue and the Anthemion, the flower symbol of the Athens Mint. The next coin was minted in 2017 and, this time, not in honor of some historical figure but of a place. In particular, this Greek Commemorative 2 Euro Coins was minted in honor of the archaeological city of Philippi, a very important site for the Greek world.
At the Obverse of the 2 euro Greece 2017 in fact there is a representation of a part of the Basilica B and the characteristic geometric decorative motifs found on the site. On the left there are two inscriptions. The first one is ΑΡΧΑΙΟΛΟΓΙΚΟΣ ΧΩΡΟΣ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΩΝ which means “Archaeological Site of Philippi”, the second one is the usual ΕΛΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ.

We are back to a Greek Commemorative 2 Euro Coins minted in honor of a historical figure. In particular this was minted in 2018 for the 75th Anniversary of the death of Kostis Palamas, Greek poet and journalist who wrote the text of the Olympic hymn.
On the obverse we can see the representation of the face of Palamas with on the left, arched, the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ and the name ΚΩΣΤΗΣ ΠΑΛΑΜΑΣ. All this is followed by the symbol of the Athens Mint while on the right is the year of issue.
In the outer circle we can notice as always 12 stars, five-pointed, European symbol.

In particular at the Obverse of the 2 euro Greece 2018 we can see a representation of a rose, symbol of Rhodes, which is present on an ancient coin found in the ancient city of Rhodes. The whole is surrounded by stylized waves. Above is the inscription 1948-2018 Η ΕΝΩΣΗ ΤΩΝ ΔΩΔΕΚΑΝΗΣΩΝ ΜΕ ΤΗΝ ΕΛΛΑΔΑ which means 1948-2018 UNION OF DODECANESE TO GREECE.
In the lower arch there is the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ and on the left the symbol of the Athens Mint.
Along the nickel crown, the outer part of the bimetallica, the 12 stars of the European Union are distributed in a circle.

In particular, this 2 Euro coin was minted in 2019 for the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Manolis Andronikos, a famous Greek archaeologist and author of numerous findings including the tomb of Philip II of Macedonia, father of Alexander the Great.

At the Obverse of the 2 euro Greece 2019 we find in fact the representation of the face of Kalvos. On the right arched right is the inscription ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ while on the left is the Ανδρέας Κάλβος 1792 – 1869. Also on the left we can see the symbol of the Athens Mint and the year of issue, 2019. Around it as usual there are the classic 12 five-pointed stars representing the European States.

2 Euro 2020 Greece – Battle of the Thermopylae
This is the 2 Euro Greece 2020 coin, minted on the occasion of the 2500th Commemoration of the Battle of Thermopylae.
In the National Face to the Obverse there is an integral helmet covering head and neck leaving only eyes and mouth uncovered, overhung by the equine plume, a typical Corinthian helmet (In ancient Greek κόρυς κορινθίη) facing left and signed below by George Stamatopoulos. Also on the left is engraved the thousandth of minting 2020 with the symbol of the Athens Mint.
In an arc along the entire upper half is engraved in capital letters “2500 XPONIA AΠO TH MAXH TΩN ΘEPMOΠYΛΩΝ”, or 2500 years of the Battle of Thermopylae, followed in the lower half by “ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ” (Hellenic Democracy). To separate the inscriptions and the drawing there is a circular graphic. In the outer ring of the coin, the nickel and copper part, are distributed in a circle the stylized European countries each in a 5-pointed star.
The reverse is the common face of the 2 euro coins.

Let’s move on to the obverse and the description of the National Face which explicitly recalls an ancient Greek coin. In fact it is a reinterpretation of an ancient statue. The protagonist is in fact a winged griffon vulture with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion. The reference to the ancient coin is also given by the underlying shape of the legendary creature, irregular shape typical of the minting of that period.
In the upper half, in a circle, “100 XPONIA AΠO THN ENΣΩMATΩΣH THΣ ΘPAKHΣ” preceded by the symbol of the Mint of Athens, instead in the lower half appears the inscription “ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ” 2020 (100 years since the incorporation of Thrace in Greece – Hellenic Democracy – 2020). In the outer rim, on the copper and nickel part, the 12 stars form a circle like the symbol of the European countries.
The Common Face is on the reverse of the coin and is like the back of the 2 euro coins.

2 Euro 2021 Greece – Greek Revolution
Here is the Greek Commemorative Coin 2021, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution. Minted on 22/04/2021
On the obverse, in the centre of the coin there is a circle with the Greek flag inside, around it a laurel wreath arranged in symmetrical branches. All around the top of the coin is engraved the inscription 1821 – 2021 200 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΕΠΑΝΑΣΤΑΣΗ, and at the bottom ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ, which translated means 200 YEARS SINCE THE GREEK REVOLUTION and HELLENIC REPUBLIC.
At the bottom centre is the symbol of the Athens Mint, a stylised Anthemion flower, a little above the monogram of the author George Stamatopoulos. Around it, in the nickel part, are engraved the 12 European stars.
The reverse side, on the other hand, features the common side of commemorative and 2-euro divisional coins.
