2 Euro commemorative coins Finland – European Union Enlargement

2 Euro commemorative coins Finland - European Union Enlargement - 2 euro 2004 Finland value
2 Euro commemorative coins Finland – European Union Enlargement

The first Finnish 2 Euro Commemoration was coined in 2004 and dedicated to the expansion of Europe. It was minted on 1/06/2004 in Helsinki-Vantaa in Finland (M).

Coin controversial for its high value, almost unjustified according to many Numismatics who do not explain the reason for so much interest in a commemorative that has no great particularity. But let’s see the description and the reason of so much interest.

At the obverse you can see the top of a pillar with the acronym EU, which stands for Europe, and from which starts a sprout that thinns and extends to new forms, a clear symbol of expansion with solid foundations. On the right the letters MM indicate the author Makinen and the Mint Director Makkonen.
The thousandth of minting is at the top of the coin on the circle made of nickel and copper that interrupts the sequence of twelve stars arranged in a circle as in the symbol of Europe.

Author: Pertti Makinen

The reverse is represented by the Common Face, the one with the value side and the map of Europe with the borders engraved between states.

Side dish: All along the side edge, finely knurled, the engraving with the inscription: SUOMI FINLAND with 3 Lion heads.

Value of 2 Euro Finland 2004 -Enlargement Commentary European Union

To be the first Commemorative coin minted by Finland it went really well, because this coin with a nominal value of 2€ has a much higher Numismatic value. But why a coin with a total circulation of 1.000.000 pieces is worth so much?
Probably because, being the first one, it has been mixed with the nominal coins and made to spin with rolls. In practice, part of the coins contained in the nominal rolls were common 2-euro coins, the other part were commemorative.

This had sparked the hunt for the lucky roll, because out of 25 coins there could be 8 to 13 commemorative coins.

In addition, the first print run was 500,000 pieces, so the first quotation was very high, only later with the second print run of another 500,000 pieces its value dropped to € 5. But it was a temporary collapse, because it resumed immediately and over time it stabilized around € 15, then the value over the years has grown more and more, up to the current value of almost € 40.

  • The Finnish 2 euro coin minted in Finland in 2004 and dedicated to the Enlargement of the European Union, is worth between €35 and €40.

Finland Divisional Coin 2004 Moomin

But as mentioned before, the collectors’ market cannot explain why spending such a high amount of money on a coin that, moreover, shows signs of contact from roll and that therefore will never reach the quality of Fior di Conio. If not those contained in boxes and divisionals.
