Generally speaking, it can be seen that Portugal has dedicated its commemorative coins to historical figures that are important for Portugal but also for the whole world, to the nature of its territory and the fruits of its land, to its centuries-old culture, architecture and discoveries. We have talked about Portugal’s divisional euro coins on this dedicated page; Euro Portugal Coins. There are also commemorative coins common to all European countries, such as the Treaties of Rome, the Economic Monetary Union, the Euro and the European Flag.
In Portugal, the Lisbon Mint of the Portuguese Republic has used two different symbols over the years:
- INCM which stands for Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda, from 2007 to 2019.
- CASA DA MOEDA 2020 onwards.
But let’s start in 2007 with the first Commemorative, in this case common to all European countries:
2 Euro Portugal 2007 – Tratado de Roma
Portugal’s first 2-euro commemorative coin was minted in 2007 and is one of those common to several European countries, namely the commemorative coin dedicated to the Treaties of Rome and their 50th Anniversary. Minted on 25/03/2007 in Lisbon (INCM).
The obverse depicts the design common to other countries, the paving of Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome with the large Treaty Book signed on 25 March 1957. To the right is the Lisbon Mint (Portugal) INCM.
Above the signed document appears the inscription EUROPA, below the year 2007 and PORTUGAL on two lines in a central flag. On the upper part of the coin, again on two lines, appears the inscription TRATADO DE ROMA / 50 ANOS. Also on the obverse side, but in the outer ring, are engraved the 12 stars of the European Union in a circle.
The reverse is the common side of the 2-euro coins distributed throughout Europe.

Value of 2 Euro Portugal Commemorative Coins 2007 – Tratado de Roma 50 Anos

2 Euro Portugal 2007 – Portuguese Council Presidency
In 2007, the 2-euro commemorative coin for the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union was also issued. Issued on 1 June 2007.
The obverse, the National Face, depicts a large tree, specifically a cork oak with a bare trunk. On the right hand side is the inscription POR/TV/GAL on three lines and on the left hand side the Portuguese coat of arms.
The lower part of the coin is engraved in a semicircle with the signature of the author Maria Irene Vilar, the minting year 2007, the mintmark of Lisbon INCM and the inscription PRESIDÊNCIA DO CONSELHO DA UE. Then, the ring around the coin depicts the twelve stars of the European Union arranged in a circle.
The obverse depicts the common side, which is the same for all 2-euro coins, commemorative and non-memorative, showing the face value and the map of Europe.

Let’s move on to another Portuguese coin, this one is from 2008 and was minted in honour of the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights. Issued on 22/09/2008.
On the obverse of these 2 euro Portuguese coins, the Atlantic Ocean is stylised in a geometric design. On the horizon, shining like the sun, is the coat of arms of Portugal, below the words PORTUGAL and below that the date of issue of the coin: 2008.
The lower part of the coin, around the central part, is engraved with the inscription 60 ANOS DA DECLARAÇÃO UNIVERSAL DOS DIREITOS HUMANOS. To the upper right is the signature of the artist Esc. J. Duarte and the mint mark INCM. The stars that make up the logo of Europe are arranged in a circle around the central part of the coin.
The reverse side of the bimetallic coin, is the common side with the 2-euro face value.

2 Euro Portugal 2009 – UEM
In 2009, another coin was issued that was the same for all European countries that use the Euro, this is the Commemorative coin dedicated to the Economic Monetary Union. Coin issued on 25/03/2007.
The obverse of these 2 euro Portuguese coins features a stylised prehistoric man merging with the € symbol of the euro. The signature of the author Georgios Stamatopoulos is at the bottom right (ΓΣ). On the upper part of the coin bears the inscription PORTUGAL and the lower part EMU 1999-2009.
All around are the 12 five-pointed stars arranged in a circle as in the symbol of the European Union.

2 Euro Portugal 2009 – Lusophone games
Another 2-euro commemorative coin from Portugal issued in 2009 is the one dedicated to the Lusophone Games. Commemorative issued on 9/06/2009 by the Lisbon Mint.
On the obverse side, the central part shows the Logo of the Lusophone Olympic Games, a stylised figure with a rhythmic gymnastics ribbon. In the upper part is the Coat of Arms of Portugal with the inscription PORTUGAL in a semicircle below.
On the lower part of the coin, along the perimeter of the coin, the Lisbon mint symbol INCM followed by the inscription 2.os JOGOS DA LUSOFONIA LISBOA and J. Aurélio, the engraver’s signature. Around it, above a texture of concentric circles, stylised as Olympic bleachers, are engraved the twelve five-pointed stars representing all the European States.

2 Euro Portugal 2010 – Portuguese Republic
The 2010 Portuguese 2-euro commemorative coin was issued to mark the 100th Anniversary of the Portuguese Republic. Minted and issued on 7/10/2010.
On the obverse of this 2 euro Portugal coin is a stylised representation of the Coat of Arms of Portugal with the Portuguese Republic in profile facing to the right, with long hair and a crown of leaves. Behind the woman’s head appears the author’s signature OSE CÂNDIDO and the mintmark INCM. On the right hand side of the coin there is the inscription REPÙBLICA PORTUGUESA followed by the dates 1910 . 2010.
Around the central part are the 12 five-pointed stars, the symbol of the European countries.

In 2011, this commemorative coin was issued to mark the 500th anniversary of the birth of explorer and writer Fernão Mendes Pinto. Issued on 8/10/2011.
The obverse depicts the sailing ship sailing on the waves of the sea recreated by a series of waving inscriptions referring to his writings, his destinations, the city of Lisbon and Portugal itself. TNow, te upper part is engraved with the semi-circular inscription FERNAO MENDES PINTO followed by the year 2011 and preceded by the date 1511. As usual, the European symbol is represented by the 12 stars arranged in a circle above the outer ring of the coin.
In the Reverse we find the Common Face with its nominal value.

Also from 2012, on 24/02/2012 to be precise, the commemorative coin wanted in all the countries of the Euro Zone, dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Economic Monetary Union also known as EMU.
The obverse of these 2 euro Portugal coins features a stylised prehistoric man merged with the euro symbol and surrounded by the symbols of energy, finance, industry, trade and population. The upper part of the coin bears the inscription PORTUGAL. The lower part is engraved with 2002 2012. To the right, vertically, is the Lisbon mint symbol INCM. The copper and nickel part of the coin is engraved with the twelve stars symbolising the European Union.
While on the reverso is the value side with its Common Face.

The 2012 Commemorative coin is the one created for Guimarães, European Capital and the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques. Commemorative Coin presented on 21/06/2012.
On the obverse, in the centre, is engraved the stylised drawing of the King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, with his sword in the foreground and the castle of Guimarães in the background. On the left side is engraved the Coat of Arms with underneath the inscription PORTUGAL. Below the castle on the right hand side is the inscription Guimarães 2012 with a heart underneath as a symbol of the event.
At the bottom is the signature of the author José de Guimarães and on the left the initials of the issuing country INCM. Looking at the outer ring we see that itis engraved with the twelve stars as a symbol of Europe.

2 Euro Portugal 2013 – Torre dos Clérigos
For the 250th anniversary of the construction of the Torre dos Clérigos in 2013, a commemorative coin was issued with the Tower in the foreground. Issued on 20/06/2013.
Specifically, on the Obverse, the Torre dos Clérigos seen from below in perspective is evident in the foreground, the Tower is positioned on the left and on the right we see the Dom Luis Bridge built over the Douro River, an arched bridge connecting Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
Under the bridge is the coat of arms of Portugal with the inscription PORTUGAL, on the left of the bridge are the mint mark INCM and the signature of the author HUGO MACIEL. The upper part of the coin is engraved with the inscription 250 ANOS TORRE DOS CLERIGOS – 2013.

In 2014, it was decided to dedicate the Commemorative to agriculture in honour of the International Year of Family Agriculture. Coin issued on 31/10/2014 by the Lisbon Mint.
The obverse of the National side depicts an agricultural scene with typical elements of Portuguese agriculture such as potatoes, pumpkin, vegetables, a hen and hand tools for working the land. Below the scene is the signature of engraver Helder Batista and the symbol of the Portuguese Mint INCM. The words AGRICULTURA FAMILIAR PORTUGAL 2014 appear in an arc at the top.
On the reverse side the Common Face with its 2 euro value side, the same for all European commemoratives.

- The commemorative 2 Euro coin of Portugal minted in 2014 for the International Year of Family Farming has a value of €3.50.
2 Euro Portugal 2014 – Carnation Revolution
In 2014, the Portuguese Lisbon also minted a commemorative coin for the 40 Years of the Carnation Revolution. Issued on 23/04/2014.
The obverse of these 2 euro coins from Portugal features a stylised carnation in the centre with the inscription PORTUGAL at the top and the coat of arms of Portugal itself. To the left begins the inscription 25 DE ABRIL made up of letters and numbers of different sizes and not aligned.

The 2015 Commemorative is the one for the 150 Years of the Portuguese Red Cross. Bimetallic issued on 15/04/2015.
The obverse of this Portuguese Commemorative Coin features a modular design that starts with the central cross, the historic symbol of the Red Cross, and multiplies as it expands through a series of repeating cubes. Below the central cross is a stylised hand, a symbol of the humanitarian service that the Red Cross provides in Portugal and abroad.
The inscription CRUZ VERMELHA PORTUGUESA is engraved on the left-hand side of the lap, and the dates 1865-2015 at the bottom, followed by the mint mark INCM and the initials of the author António Marinho AM.

2 Euro Portugal 2015 – Timor
In the 2015 we also have a Commemorative coin for the 500th anniversary of the arrival in Timor. Coin issued on 15/07/2015.
The obverse of the commemorative coin depicts on the left a 16th century Caravel, symbolising the arrival of the first navigators on the island of Timor. In the foreground on the right is the thatched roof of a typical island building featuring wood carvings with the Lisbon Mint INCM symbol underneath.
On the top right is the date 1515 followed by the inscription PORTUGAL, on the bottom left is the inscription TIMOR followed by the year 2015, the signature of Fernando Fonseca, the author. In the outline of the portrait, engraved on the copper and nickel alloy, are the stars forming a circle as in the Europe logo.
The reverse side is the so-called value side, the side with the face value of the coin, in this case the two euro.

- The 2015 Portuguese Commemorative Bimetallic Coin dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the landing in Timor is far from being a rare coin. It has a current value of €3.50.

Also from 2015 are the two commemorative euros common to other European countries, those dedicated to the 30th Anniversary of the European Flag. This coin was issued on 30/11/2015.
The obverse face of these 2 Euros of Portugal is the European Flag from which starts a spiral of 12 stylised star-shaped men coming towards us in the foreground. To the right along the spiral is the inscription PORTUGAL 1985-2015. The signature of the author Georgios Stamatopoulos is under the arm of the little man in the foreground, while the mint mark INCM is above his head.

Here is another commemorative coin dedicated to the Olympic Games, this time for Portugal’s participation in the Rio Olympics. Coin issued on 03/05/2014.
The obverse depicts the stylisation of an art installation by Joanna Vasconcelos, the Heart of Viana. The installation, inspired by typical Viana do Castelo jewellery, was made to support the athletes of the Portuguese Olympic Games team.

In 2016 also the Commemorative dedicated to the 25 de Abril Bridge on the occasion of its 50th Anniversary. Coin issued on 19/07/2016.
On the obverse of the 2016 Portugal 2-euro coin is the Ponte 25 de Abril (Salazar Bridge until 1975), built in 1966 over the River Tagus to link Lisbon and Almada. The bridge is drawn in perspective and the word PORTUGAL is inscribed on the right-hand side of the coin, with the coat of arms of Portugal underneath.
Under the Bridge, also on the right, is the denomination PONTE / 25 DE ABRIL / 1966 / 2016. At the bottom of the coin along the edge of the central part of the coin are: on the left the mintmark INCM, and on the right the signature of the author JOSÉ AURÉLIO

In the year 2017, the Commemorative coin for the 150 Years of the Portuguese Police Force was issued. Commemorative of 13/07/2017.
The obverse features the stylisation of two human profiles and four buildings as emblems of urban areas and the citizens who live in them, protected by the work of the Police. On the right the three words in a radial pattern: DIREITOS / LIBERDADES / GARANTIAS. In the central part of the coin, at the top, the acronym PSP and the coat of arms of the Police.
On the left are the dates 1867 – 2017 SEGURANÇA PÚBLICA, at the bottom the Lisbon Mint symbol INCM followed by the signature of the author JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES and PORTUGAL.
