The Classic Period 1861 – 1911
The Classic period, from the monetary point of view, was full of important changes. One of these changes concerns the image of the King who until now was praised in the legends of the coins with the noble titles acquired by his family during the previous centuries. With the minting of the new coins instead could be mentioned only the Kingdom of Italy. Moreover the King was depicted for the first time with the truncation of the neck naked and no longer with the collar of the royal uniform.
Hence the distinctions between coins with “Long Neck” or “Short Neck” so dear to Numismatic fans.
In 1863 came into force the new monetary law that brought down the title of silver coins for the divisionals and brought the new title to 835, with order to withdraw the coins issued in the two previous years.
This is why coins from 1861 and 1862 are much rarer to find and of inferior quality.
10 Lira Cents “Experiment”
The first 10 centesimi coin minted in 1862 is called “Experiment”. The reason of this wording, engraved on the coin itself, is doubtful. Some people believe that it was an experiment of the Naples mint to introduce to the population the new decimal system, mint that, it is said, minted 20,000 pieces and then withdrew them immediately, moreover the minting of this coin is not in the official catalogs of the mint.
Certainly is that this coin was minted by someone and in bronze. To date, there are only a few coins in circulation with a state of conservation of BB and MB at most.
The Obverse represents the profile of the King facing left with the words VITTORIO EMANUELE II RE D’ITALIA around it. Under the cut of the neck the inscription EXPERIMENT.
The reverse shows the inscription 10 CENTESIMI 1862 on three central flag lines inscribed inside the circle formed by laurel branches with arrowheads joined by a bow.

10 Lira Cents Vittorio Emanuele II
The 10 centesimi Vittorio Emanuele II coin also called “Soldone”, “Due Soldi” and “Palancone” was the first official 10 centesimi coin minted in 1862 to facilitate small daily exchanges. A large number of small coins had to be put in circulation and the Italian mints were not able to satisfy the need in a short time, so they were minted also in public foreign mints like Paris and Brussels.
The mints of Paris and Brussels did not engrave their mark of recognition on the coins, which instead did the private mints of Birmingham and Strasbourg also involved in the production of the new Italian coins.

The 10 Lira Cent Coins 1862 were minted by the Milan and Strasbourg mint, instead the 10 Centesimi 1863 only at the Strasbourg mint. The 10 lira cent coin 1866 and the 10 Centesimi 1867 were produced at all the above mentioned Mints. A peculiarity of these coins is that often the dates minted do not correspond to the real year of production of the coin.
On the obverse is engraved the profile of the King without crown with a moustache and goatee looking to the left. Around the inscription VITTORIO EMANUELE II RE D’ITALIA and below the neck line there is the signature of the engraver Ferraris.
In the reverse on three lines with a central flag the inscription 10 CENTESIMI e il millesimo. Around to form a circle the two branches of laurel on the left and oak on the right joined in the lower part by an ornamental bow. Under the bow the space for the mint symbol.

10 Lira Cent Coin “Umberto I”
The Umberto I 10 Cents coin was minted in 1893 and 1894 by the Mint of Rome with the help of the Mint of Birmingham. The peculiarity of this coin is that in the two years the King’s hair is different.
In fact in the version of the 10 Lira Cent coin 1894 the hair seems to have a more accentuated stripe on the left and the hair shorter and combed compared to the version of the coin 10 lira cent that, on the contrary, has more disheveled and slightly longer hair. Moreover in the 1894 version the signature of Speranza is under the neck, in the 1893 version it’s along the lower edge.
Subsequently, between 1901 and 1905 was ordered the withdrawal of 20,000,000 coins between those of 10 and 5 cents of lire to be replaced with as many nickel coins, which never happened, because they were never minted with other alloys.
In the obverse is engraved the head of King Umberto I in profile with a moustache looking to the left. Then, in front of his eyes the inscription UMBERTO I and behind the head RE D’ITALIA, under the signature of the engraver Speranza.
In the reverse there is the inscription 10 CENTESIMI e millesimo on three lines, around the circle formed by the two laurel and oak branches joined by the bow at the bottom and the star of Italy at the top. The mint symbol in the lower part of the face under the bow knot.

The 10 lira cents coin 1893 and the 10 Cents 1894 minted in Rome are worth more than those minted in Birmingham.

10 Lira Cent “Prora” Vittorio Emanuele III – Campione
On the obverse the profile of Vittorio Emanuele III in starry uniform. Around the writing VITTORIO EMANUELE III KING OF ITALY.
On the reverse side we seethe writing CENT. 10 1908 and in the center the “Italia Marinara” that offers itself to the wind on the bow of a Roman ship, on the right hand holds an olive branch. On the bow is in relief the R of the Roman mint and on the right the inscription P. CANONICA M. // L. DAYS I. In the background the horizon of the sea with two other sailing boats in the background.

This is a much discussed coin and not recognized as such by everyone. In fact this Italian 10 Lire Cent “Prora” coin was minted in 1908 for a special occasion: the laying of the first stone of the new headquarters of the Mint of Rome on the Esquiline Hill. Only 3 coins were ever put into circulation, in fact the first one was placed on the first stone of the new building, the second one was donated to King Vittorio Emanuele III and the third one remained in the Museum of the Mint of Rome.
Later the minting was used without authorization in 1926 for a small amount of coins very rare to find. Few researchers are able to distinguish the differences between the coin of 1908 and 1926, because the differences are perceptible only to expert eyes.
For this reason the coin can be considered a sample coin classifiable as R5.
Of this coin there is also the trial version that carries the inscription PROVA on the right, after the sailor’s hand and above the horizon line of the sea. In the PROVA coin is missing the symbol R of the mint of Rome from the bow of the ship and is classified as R4.
The “experiment” coin
Among the proofs there is also an EXPERIMENT version coined in aluminum that uses for the Obverse the minting of the “4 bese proof of Somalia” that in fact sees the King’s half-bust different from the other coins and there is also the written proof on both sides. This version EXPERIMENT is classified as R4.

The Modern Period 1911 – 1945
The Modern period goes from 1911 to 1945 and it’s a period of war that causes the almost disappearance of coins like the 1 and 2 cents coins, in general small nickel coins. This is because nickel was precious because it was destined for the major part to the production of weapons useful for the war.
The problem was solved by exhuming the nickels of Umberto I, those previously withdrawn, which were used as a basis for a reunion. In fact some projects of 10 cents coins of 1915 were printed on the 20 Umberto I Centesimi.
10 Lira Cent Coin “Cinquantenario” Vittorio Emanuele III
This is a Commemorative Coin alled 10 Lira Cent Coin “Cinquantenario” of Vittorio Emanuele III, minted for the 50th Anniversary of the Kingdom of Italy.
The peculiarity of this coin is that the metal used to mint it was the proceeds of the recasting of the 10 Cents withdrawn from circulation because too ruined.
The obverse represents King Vittorio Emanuele III in profile with naked neck, around the inscription VITTORIO EMANUELE III RE D’ITALIA and under the King’s neck the signature of the author D. Trentacoste and the engraver L. Giorgini.
In the reverse, two figures are depicted, a female in front representing Italy and a male behind placed on a pedestal with a helmet and globe in hand symbolizing the city of Rome. On the right of the pedestal is clearly visible a plow with ears of corn and fruit and in the background, on the left, the bow of a merchant ship sailing with sails gathered. On the left below the face value C.10 and below the symbol of the mint of Rome R. Above the horizon line of the sea the inscription 1861-1911.

It is a 10 Cents Coin of 1919 under the reign of King Vittorio Emanuele III, minted until 1937.
On the obverse represents the naked head of the King looking to the left and around it the inscription VITTORIO EMANVELE III RE D’ITALIA. Along the edge of the coin under the neck the signature of the author A. Motti.
In the reverse there is a beautiful representation of a bee on a flower collecting pollen. On the right the face value of the coin C.10 and under the thousandth of minting. The symbol of the mint of Rome R is under the tip of a leaf on the left and instead the signature of R. Brozzi is on the right side along the edge.

The 10 lira Cents coin with the Bee PROVA Print of 1919 are the test coin to verify the yield on the different alloys and the effect of the new minting. In fact, on the reverse side of the coin, the writing TRIAL PRINTING appears along the lower edge or in the version with only TRIAL over one thousandth of minting. These coins are classifiable as R2 and R3.

10 Cents Empire coin of King Vittorio Emanuele III 1st Type minted for the celebration of the new Empire. This coin was minted in copper from 1936 until 1939 and is red in color.
In the Obverse the King’s bare head turned to the left. On the left the inscription VITT- EM – III and on the right – RE – E – IMP –
Then, on the reverse is engraved the Savoy coat of arms with fascio and Royal Crown. On the left an ear of wheat and on the right an oak branch. At the bottom left the symbol of the Mint of Rome R and the inscription C. 10 and the thousandth on the right the inscription 10 and XIV (year of the fascist era). In the lower part of the coin, along the edge, the signature of G. Romagnoli.

10 Lira Cents Coin “Empire” – 2st Bronzital Type
The 10 lira cent coin Empire 2nd Type coin minted on Bronzital from 1939 to 1943. It uses the same minting of the 1st type coin. It changes only the alloy used for printing, in fact the color takes on a yellowish shade. However we know exemplars like the italian 10 Cents 1940 mistakenly minted on copper instead of Bronzital, surely an error due to an exchange of logs with the previous type in use until the previous year. These coins are easily recognizable by their red color.
On the Obverse side the profile of the King without crown facing left with the inscription VITT-EM-III -RE-E-IMP-.
On the reverse in the center the Savoy coat of arms with bundle and crown, on the sides the ear of wheat and the oak branch. Then, on the left the thousandth of minting, the mint symbol R and the C. indicating the hundredths. On the right instead the year of the fascist era and the 10 of the face value. Below the signature of the author Romagnoli.

Italian 10 Lira Cent “Empire” PROVA
The 10 Cent Empire “PROVA” are classified as R3 the 1st Type and R4 the 2nd Type. The writing PROVA is located on the reverse along the edge on the right between the two oak leaves. This 1936 PROVA is on copper and the 1939 PROVA is on bronze and aluminum.
However there are a 10 Cents PROVA Empire of 1942 and one of 1943 printed on aluminum, these are classified as R5 and probably there is only one sample for ’42 and one for ’43.
