Belgium Euro Coins

On this page we are going to analyze the Belgium Euro Coins collection and we will see every single divisional coin and every series of the Euro Belgium. The first peculiarity is the subject depicted, which is always the same in all coins, i.e. the profile of the King.

There have been 2 Kings so far: The first issue of the Euro sees in fact the portrait of King Albert II from 1999 to 2013. From 2014 instead the profile is that of King Philip.

Introduction to the Euro Coins of Belgium

The reference Belgian Mint is that of Brussels until 2017, but the mint symbol only appeared in 2008.
After the closure of the Brussels Mint in 2017, from 2018 onwards, the Utrecht Mint will be responsible for issuing the Belgium Euro Coins.

Now we see the different Mint Directors that have followed over the years, this is important because each Director has signed their issues with different symbols, which is why the coins may be slightly different year after year.

Let’s see the symbols chosen by the various directors:

• Romain Coenen is Director in Brussels from 1999 to 2009, his symbol appears in 2008 and is a scale.
• Serge Lesens has a Feather as a symbol and his direction of the Brussels Mint lasts from 2010 to 2012.
• From 2013 to 2016 it is the turn of Director Bernard Gillard who chooses a Cat as a symbol.
• In 2017 the production moves to the Utrecht Mint and the management is under Ingrid van Herzele whose symbol is the Herzele coat of arms, a municipality in Flanders.

1 Cent Belgium Euro Coins (1° Serie)

Here is the first coin, the 1 Euro cent Belgium First Series, minted in 1999/2007.
The author of the design is Jan Alfons Keustermas.
The mint is from Brussels.

At the obverse appears the profile of King Albert II with glasses, in the center of the coin, looking to the left. Around the 12 stars of the European Union placed in a circle, a circle that closes with the thousandth of minting at the bottom and the monogram of the King on the right, an A Con above the Crown.

At the reverse side there is the Common Face equal for all the countries of the Euro Zone.

1 Cent Belgium Euro Coins (2° Serie)

The 1 Euro cent coin Belgium Second Series is issued in 2008 and differs from the first series for some details:

At the obverse under the profile of King Albert II, inside the circle, there is the thousandth of minting and to the right the monogram of the King, the crowned A.
The portrait changes slightly, being more youthful, the hair changes slightly on the nape and forehead, the chin changes and other small details. (However, already the following year the previous version of the portrait is restored).

In addition, other symbols appear, the first one is the indication of the Belgian state BE under the A Coronata, this in order to comply with the indications of the European Commission of 2005 that required the name of the issuing state or its symbol to appear on the National Face of the coin, as in this case.

In addition, since 2008 the 12 stars of the European Union had to form a closed circle without interruption.

On the sides of the thousandth of minting make their first appearance of symbols:

• On the right the symbol of the Mint, the Archangel Gabriel with a Cross on it.
• On the left the scale, symbol of the Mint Director Romain Coenenen.

Al reverse the common face unchanged from the previous version.

Here we are with the coin 1 Cent Euro Belgium Third Series, minted in 2009/2013.

At the obverse is restored the effigy of King Albert II, the one used until 2007, on the right the A Coronata with the abbreviation of Belgium BE underneath. Under the thousandth of minting with on the left the symbol of the Brussels Mint, the Argangel Gabriel with the Cross above. On the right instead the mint symbol. The Feather for Serge Lesens (2009/2012) and the Cat for Bernard Gillard (2013).

The reverse has remained unchanged, i.e. the same Face Common equal for all coins from 1 eurocent.

The King Albert II abdicated on July 21, 2013 in favor of King Philip, his son, then changes the effigy of the coin 1 Euro cent Fourth Series, designed by Luc Luycx and minted in 2014 in Brussels.

At the obverse the profile of King Philip looking to the right, all around there are the 12 stars of the European Union.

On the left the symbol of Belgium BE and above the monogram of King Philip, i.e. a crown with the two intertwined letters F and P on it. F stands for the name Filip in Flemish and P stands for Philippe in French.

Under the neck there is engraved the thousandth of minting with on the right:

• 2014/2017 – the Archangel Gabriel with the cross on it, symbol of the Brussels Mint.
• 2018 – The Mint symbol changes with the closing of the Brussels Mint and the change to the Ultrecht Mint that chooses the winged Caduceus symbol.

To the left of the thousandth of minting there is:

• The Cat as a symbol of the Mint Director Bernard Gillard from 2014 to 2016.
• Herzele’s coat of arms in 2017 when Ingrid van Herzele takes over.

Let’s start now with the first series of 2 Eurocent coins. Here in fact the first one: 2 Euro Cent Belgium First Series, minted from 1999 to 2007.

Let’s see the Obverse engraved with the profile of Albert II King of Belgium. 2 Cent Belgium Euro Coin (2° Serie)

The 2 Euro Cent Belgium Second Series coin was issued in 2008, it is a variant of the first series where some details change:

The reverse is the same face for all 2 eurocent coins circulating in the Eurozone.

On the face of the obverse, the National side, the profile of King Albert II inscribed in a circle within which is also enclosed the thousandth of minting at the bottom and the monogram of the King on the right (A crowned). The portrait differs slightly from the previous version, thus being more youthful, what changes are: the hair, slightly on the nape and forehead, the chin and other small details.
The new version, however, has a short life, because already the following year, 2009, is restored the previous version of the portrait, the less youthful but more appropriate to the figure of the King.

Other new symbols also appear, the first one: the Belgian status indicator BE inserted under the A Coronata on the right. This detail is added in order to respect the indications given by the European Commission in 2005, indications that required to indicate on the National Face of the coin also the name of the issuing State or at least its symbol.

Another change, the 12 stars of the European Union now form an uninterrupted circle, a change due to comply with official guidelines. In fact, since 2008 the twelve stars had to form a closed circle without any interruption.

There is also a change on the right and left of the thousandth of minting where new symbols appear:

• On the right appears the Mint symbol which is the stylization of the Archangel Gabriel with a cross on it.
• On the left instead appears a Scale that is the symbol of the Mint Director Romain Coenenen.

On the right is engraved the a “Coronata” with the letters BE underneath as Belgium’s initials. Below is the thousandth of minting, on his left is the Argangel Gabriel with the Cross as a symbol of the Mint of Brussels. The most important change happens with the Fourth Series, thanks to the fact that King Albert II abdicated in favor of his son, King Philip, on July 21, 2013. It changes therefore the effigy of the coin 2 Euro Cent Belgium Fourth Series, which is designed by Luc Luycx and minted in 2014 in the Brussels Mint.

At the obverse is proposed the profile of the King Philip facing right, all around the 12 stars of the European Union.

The symbol of Belgium BE with the monogram of King Philip on it, the crown with the two intertwined letters F and P on it, is on the left.

Under the King’s collar there is the year of minting with a mint symbol on the right that changes according to the years:

• From 2014 to 2017 – the Archangel Gabriel under the cross as a symbol of the Brussels Mint.
• In 2018 – He closes the Mint of Brussels and passes to the Mint of Ultrecht, the symbol becomes the winged Caduceus.

Instead on the left of the minting thousandth there is the symbol of the Mint Director:

The figure of the King is slightly different from the previous version. It is in fact more youthful, to change are: the hair on the forehead and nape, the chin and other small details.

The new version was not very successful and already in 2009 the original version of the portrait was restored.

New symbols also appear: the indication of the Belgian status BE is inserted under the right crowned A . This indication is added in order to comply with the new rules of 2005 of the European Commission that required to indicate on the National Faces of the coins also the name of the State to which they refer or at least a recognizable symbol traceable to the State of Issue of the coins.

Another change concerns the twelve stars of the European Union that form an uninterrupted circle, in compliance with the new indications of 2008 that want an uninterrupted closed circle formed by the 12 stars (symbol of the Euro Zone countries).

It is with the Fourth series that the most important change happens!
In fact, thanks to the fact that on July 21, 2013 King Albert II abdicated in favor of King Philip, his son must change the effigy of the 5 Euro Cents Fourth Series, coin designed by Luc Luycx and minted in the Brussels Mint in 2014.

At the obverse then the new effigy of King Philip looking to the right, the 12 stars of the European Union all around to form a circle.

On the left is the symbol of Belgium BE just below the monogram of RE Filippo, a logo formed by a crown with the two letters F and P intertwined above it.

Under the portrait of the King, in the central part, there is the minting thousandth, to the right of the thousandth there is the mint symbol that varies according to the years:

• 2014 / 2017 – the Archangel Gabriel with a cross (Symbol of the Brussels Mint).
• 2018 – the winged Caduceus symbol of the Ultrecht Mint.

To the left of the thousandth instead there is the symbol of the Director of the Mint:

Here we have the first coin in Nordic Gold, the first of the 10 cents series: 10 Euro Cents Belgium First Series, a coin that was minted in 1999 until 2007.

In fact, we see that on reverse the new map of the Eurozone countries has appeared, a map with the countries all united and no longer separated as in the previous drawing.

To the obverse remains unchanged. We find the profile of King Albert II facing left inside a circle, instead along the outer ring of the coin there are the 12 stars interrupted only by the thousandth of minting and the monogram of the King the A with crown.

However, in 2008 a new version of the National Face is issued and the 10 Euro Cent Belgium Third Series is released. What changes?

Another change is the one related to the stars of the European Union that now form a closed circle, the indications of 2008 in fact require that the 12 stars form an uninterrupted circle.

To the right the profile of King Albert looking to the left inscribed inside the circle, inside the circle now there is also engraved the thousandth of minting and also the monogram of the King composed of a crowned A. The profile of the King is slightly different from the previous version. He looks younger, but what has changed?: the hair on the nape and forehead, the part of the chin and some other small details.

New symbols also appear: underneath the A crowned on the right is the indication of the State of Belgium BE . The indication is added in compliance with the new regulations launched in 2005 by the European Commission. These regulations require the indication of the State name on the National Face or at least one symbol that can be traced back to the State itself.

Another change is the appearance of the new symbols to the right and left of the minting thousandth:

Here is the 10 Euro Cents coin (Fourth Series), designed by Luc Luycx and minted in the Bruzelles Mint in 2014. With the Fourth series changes the effigy and the King. In fact, on 21 July 2013 King Albert II abdicated in favor of King Philip, his son, and a new series of Euro was born.

To the right is the profile of King Philip looking to the right with the 12 stars of the European Union all around to form a closed circle.

On the left instead there is the symbol of Belgium BE, under the two letters there is engraved the logo formed by a crown with under the two letters F and P intertwined, monogram of King Philip.

In the lower central part of the coin there is the thousandth of minting with the mint symbol on the right that varies according to the years:

20 Cents Belgium Euro Coins (3° Serie)

In 2008 a new National Face is issued and the 20 Euro Cent Belgium Third Series is coined. What has changed?

The stars of the European Union now form a closed circle. In fact, the 2008 indications say that the 12 stars must necessarily form an unbroken circle.

To the obverse there is always the profile of RE Alberto facing left. Inside the circle now there are also the thousandth of minting and the monogram of the RE (the crowned A). The portrait of the King differs slightly from the previous version. He looks younger, let’s see what has changed: the hair on the nape and forehead, the shape of the chin and other small details change.

New symbols also appear: in fact, under the Crowned A there is also the indication of the State of Belgium, i.e. the writing BE. This new indication is added in order to comply with the new regulations launched in 2005 by the European Commission. These regulations require the indication of the State name on the National Face. Alternatively, at least one symbol that can be traced back to the same State.

New symbols also appear on the right and left of the year of minting:

• On the right is engraved the symbol of the Mint, the Archangel Gabriel with the Cross on it.
• On the left is engraved a Libra, the emblem of Romain Coenenen who is the Director of the Mint.

20 Cents Belgium Euro Coins (4° Serie)

Here are the 20 Euro Cents Fourth Series, coin designed by Luc Luycx and minted by the Bruzelles Mint in 2014. With this Fourth Series changes the portrait and the King himself. In fact King Albert II abdicated in favor of his son Philip on July 21, 2013 giving birth to a new series of Euro dedicated to King Philip.

The profile of RE Filippo is engraved on the obverse side. The 12 stars of the European Union are distributed all around to form a circle.

In 2008 changes the National Face and then comes the Third Series, this is the 50 Euro Cents Belgium Third Series.
Let’s see together what has also changed in the National Face.

First of all, the stars of the European Union now form a closed and unbroken circle. The 2008 indications say that the 12 stars around the coin must form a complete circle without interruption.

On the obverse side there is a profile of RE Alberto with his glasses facing left. In addition to the portrait of the King, inside the circle, there are now also the year of minting and monogram of the King himself (the crowned A). The profile of the King is slightly modified in comparison to the previous version. It thus appears more youthful. Let’s see what has changed in the portrait: meanwhile the hair on the nape and forehead, then also the shape of the chin and other minor details.

There are also symbols that had never been seen before: under the crowned A appears the indication of State of Belgium, the letters BE . The new acronym is added to comply with the European Commission’s 2005 standards. These rules require to indicate the State name on all National Faces. As an alternative to the full name, at least one abbreviation that can be traced back to the State itself.

As an alternative to the name of the State, in case of a long name for example, at least one acronym must be indicated that can be traced back to the issuing State.
