1000 Lire Montessori Banknote

Updated:

Let's analyze in detail the 1000 Lire banknote featuring Maria Montessori, the first banknote of the Italian Republic depicting an illustrious figure of the 20th century. This banknote of the Italian Republic was printed by the Bank of Italy from 1990 until 1998.

The face selected as the effigy of this banknote is that of Maria Montessori, one of the most important Italian figures of the 20th century, replacing that of Giuseppe Verdi and Marco Polo on the banknote of the same value.

This numismatic tribute to Maria Montessori was not the only one in recent history: indeed, Montessori was previously depicted on the 200 lire 1980 FAO coin and more recently on the 2 Euro Montessori 2020, which commemorate the 150th anniversary of her birth.

Description of 1000 Lire Montessori – Obverse

On the obverse of the banknote, we find on the right side a large portrait of Maria Montessori in her mature age. Near her head, further to the right, is the inscription M. Montessori. Below the portrait, we see the inscriptions Gio. Pino Inv. F. Zanotti Inc. These initials are the signatures of two of the creators of this banknote.

Maria Montessori, besides being one of the first Italian women to graduate in medicine, was a scientist, educator, pedagogue, philosopher, and child neuropsychiatrist, and she is best known for the educational method that bears her name, widely adopted in many schools around the world.

The 1000 Lire Maria Montessori banknote was issued with Decree No. 03.10.1990 and printed from 1990 to 1998, measuring 110 mm x 60 mm. The special paper used for printing contains special fluorescent fibers. Additionally, each note has a security thread that is placed vertically inside.

There is also a watermark on the left side of the main face. It can be seen when the banknote is held up to the light, revealing the head of Maria Montessori and the monogram with the letters “BI” of the Bank of Italy. Depending on the year of issue of the banknote, you may find the signatures of Ciampi and Speziali, Fazio and Speziali, or Fazio and Amici.

On the left side of each banknote, above the serial number, are the signatures of both the Governor of the Bank of Italy and the Cashier.

“1000 LIRE MILLE” is the nominal value of the banknote, found at the top, first in digits and then in letters. To the left of 1000, vertically, is the inscription “Officina della Banca d’Italia“. Below the inscription Lire Mille, it reads “payable on demand to the bearer“.

At the bottom of the banknote, we find two signatures: that of the Governor and that of the Cashier. In the central part of the banknote, almost above the security thread, there is a large state emblem depicting the Lion of Saint Mark and the Maritime Republics.

The lower strip of the obverse of the banknote contains the serial number of the banknote on the left and right, with the inscription Banca d’Italia in the center.

Now let's analyze the “reverse” of the 1000 lire banknote. The main depiction is taken from the painting “Children at Study” by Armando Spadini. The original work by the painter is displayed in Rome, at Palazzo Koch, the headquarters of the Bank of Italy.

Below the depiction of Spadini's work (Florence 1883 – Rome 1925) featuring the image of two children engaged in study, there is the inscription A. De Angelis Inc. which is simply the engraver's signature.

In the upper right corner, the figure “1000” is present, which is the nominal value of the banknote. On the right side, vertically, the wording Ministerial Decree 3 October 1990 is printed. At the bottom right corner, the inscription “The law punishes the manufacturers and dealers of counterfeit notes.”

1000 Lire Montessori Value

What is the value of the 1000 Lire paper banknote featuring Maria Montessori? It ranges from €1 to €220. Below you will find the table with all the prices, but as you can imagine, its value depends on the condition of the banknote and its serial number.

The condition is crucial, and it is logical that a banknote that is folded, stained with ink, or torn has no value.

Note that banknotes in Uncirculated condition (Fior di Stampa - FS) are those that retain the highest value and quality, as if they were “just printed” by the Bank of Italy.

There is also another fact to consider when discussing the value of the 1000 Lire Montessori, but of any banknote in general. The serial number of the banknote plays an important role regarding its valuation. Collectors prefer banknotes from the first series, or 1000 lire banknotes with special serial numbers or replacement series.

If your 1000 lire paper Montessori does not have any of these characteristics regarding the serial number, that is, it does not belong to the first series, does not have a special serial number, or does not belong to a replacement series, its value is €1 in Uncirculated condition.

First Series 1000 Lire Montessori

The 1000 Lire Montessori that start with AA and end with the letter A belong to the first series. Each of these banknotes, depending on its condition, has a value between €2 and €35 per piece.

1000 Lire Montessori with Special Serial Numbers

These particular banknotes fall into a very specific collector's market. They are serial numbers with sequential numbers or all the same numbers. Some of them, in Uncirculated condition, can be worth between €50 and €100. If the banknote has even more special numbers, such as the number 000001, then the value of the 1000 lire paper at auction could exceed the catalog value and reach €350 - €400 (in Uncirculated condition).

Replacement Series of the 1000 Lire Montessori

Replacement series are those banknotes that were printed to replace defective pieces. They do not have a large mintage like normal series, and for this reason, they are rarer and have a higher value.

How can you recognize a replacement series of the 1000 Lire Montessori? Easy, they are those whose serial number starts with the letter “X”. If the banknote has a serial number that starts with XA, XB, XC, XD it is rare and worth up to €220 in FS. If it has XE, XF, XG, XH it is still rare but worth less, a maximum of €35 in FS.
