In this article we are going to analyse the 2 Euro Commemorative Vatican coins, that is all the coins that the Rome Mint has minted on behalf of the Vatican State, in the 2 Euro denomination, commemorating some particular event.

As always, the aim of our survey will be to understand what are the characteristics of these coins, what makes them unique, what are the historical events related to their minting and, of course, what is the value that these commemorative euros have on the market.

The first coin in this collection commemorates the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Vatican City State.

The coin’s obverse depicts the perimeter of the City with St Peter’s Square and its Basilica in the centre. To the left we find the circular inscription “75° ANNO DELLO STATO” while to the top right the dates “1929 – 2004”.

On the right are the mintmark R and the names of the sculptor ‘VEROI’ and the author ‘L.D.S.’. Inc.”.

All around are the 12 five-pointed stars representing the European states, while on the reverse side the coin has the same face as all other 2-euro coins.

Let’s move on to the second 2 Euro commemorative coin from the Vatican. In this case the coin commemorates the 20th World Youth Day.

Specifically, the obverse of the 2-euro Vatican 2005 coin depicts Cologne Cathedral with a comet above it. Around it is the circular inscription ‘XX GIORNATA MONDIALE DELLA GIOVENTU’.

On the left are the names of the sculptor ‘LONGO’ and the engraver ‘E.L.F. Inc.’. All around are the 12 five-pointed stars interrupted at the top by the mint mark and the minting year, and at the bottom by the inscription ‘CITTÀ DEL VATICANO’.

Let’s move on to another coin commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Swiss Guard.

The coin’s obverse depicts a Guard in the act of swearing an oath to the Pope with a flag in his hand. At the top is the arched inscription “GUARDIA SVIZZERA PONTIFICIA” and at the bottom the arched inscription “CITTÀ DEL VATICANO”.

On the left is the date 1506 and on the right the mintmark and the minting year 2006.

Near the flagpole is the name of the author “O.ROSSI” and under the mintmark the engraver’s initials “M.C.C. INC.”.

Now we come to the first coin in honour of a very important personage. Specifically, this 2-euro coin commemorates the 80th birthday of Pope Benedict XVI.

On the obverse there is a portrait of Pope Benedict XVI facing left and all around the circular inscription “BENEDICTI XVI P.M. ÆTATIS ANNO LXXX – CITTA’ DEL VATICANO” with the name of the city slightly larger.

To the left are the mintmark R and the minting year 2007. Further down are the names of the author and the engraver.

Another coin dedicated to a very important historical and religious figure. Specifically, we are talking about Saint Paul and the coin commemorating the 2000th anniversary of his birth.

The coin’s obverse depicts the scene of St Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus. The foreground shows St Paul on his horse, driven mad by a sudden light. In the background is Damascus itself.

Let us now turn to a coin dedicated to the world of science. In particular, this 2 Euro commemorative coin from the Vatican was minted in honour of the International Year of Astronomy.

On the obverse is a beautiful geometric design divided into four parts. In the upper right section is Michelangelo’s ‘Creation of the Stars’, in the upper left is Galileo’s telescope, in the lower left a sundial and in the lower right a new generation telescope.

In the lower part of the design there is a sun surrounded by stars and planets. Above this design are the mintmark and the minting year, while to the left and right are the names of the author and the engraver respectively.

Let us return to a coin minted for a celebration of a religious nature. In this case we are talking about a 2 euro coin commemorating the Year of the Priest.

The obverse depicts a scene in which a shepherd tries to save a sheep from the mouth of a lion. At the top in an arc is the inscription “-CITTA’ DEL VATICANO-” while at the bottom is written in smaller letters “ANNO SACERDOTALE”.

Once again a coin commemorating a very important religious event. In particular we are talking about the 2 Euro coin commemorating the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima.

On the obverse we find the representation of the three shepherd children videoing the Virgin Mary with the Shrine of Fatima behind them. At the top in an arc we find the inscription “CITTA’ DEL VATICANO” with immediately below the dates 1917 and 2017. Immediately below the date 1917 is the inscription “FATIMA”.

Further down from this inscription is the mint symbol R. At the bottom of the coin we find to the left and right respectively the signatures of the author and the engraver.

On the Obverse of the Vatican 2 euro 2018 we note that the coin features the artwork “Group of the Lacoons” depicting the priest Lacoon and his sons fighting snakes, a sculpture kept in the Vatican Museums.

On the obverse, located in the centre, is the effigy of Padre Pio with the inscription “CITTA’ DEL VATICANO” at the top and the words “Padre Pio” in italics at the bottom.

In the centre of the obverse face are Christ the Judge and Mary, a detail found in Michelangelo’s “Last Judgement” fresco in the Sistine Chapel. On the left is the inscription CITTÀ DEL VATICANO, on the right CAPPELLA SISTINA – FINE DEI RESTAURI. Also on the right are the dates 1994 – 2019 and the Mint of Rome symbol R.

At the bottom the signatures of the authors of the drawing and engraving D. LONGO INC. A.M. (Daniela Longo and Annalisa Masini). The outer ring of the coin depicts the stars of the European Union in a circle.

The obverse corresponds to the Value Side of the coin, the one with the 2 euro value. (Common side)

These 2 Euro Commemorative Vatican 2020 coins are dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of Pope John Paul II. Karol Józef Wojtyla was born in 1920, became Pope on 16 October 1978, and remained Pope until 2 April 2005. Issued on 23/06/2020.

The coin’s obverse depicts the portrait of Pope Wojtyla on the right with the dates 1920 2020, the mint mark R and the inscription PAPA JOHN PAUL II. On the left is Poland’s Wadowice Basilica under the depiction of the eclipse of the moon within the star of the Virgin Mary. The eclipse is in fact a phenomenon that occurred on both the day of his birth and the day of his death, which is why it has become a symbol of this beloved Pope.

The coin’s upper left-hand corner is engraved . At the bottom is a laurel branch and the inscription CITTÀ DEL VATICANO. In the nickel ring of the coin are the 12 European stars distributed in a circle.

The Common Face is on the reverse of the coin and shows the value of the 2 euro.

Also in 2020, the 2 Euro Commemorative Coin Vatican 2020 is minted for the 500th anniversary of the death of Raphael Sanzio, the famous Renaissance painter. Coin issued on 16/10/2020.

On the obverse side, on the left, is the self-portrait of Raphael himself, a portrait found in his fresco The School of Athens from around 1510, located in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican Museums. On the right, in a semicircle, is the inscription RAFFAELLO SANZIO, underneath the dates 1520 and 2020, and a detail of the two winged cherubs from his work La Madonna Sistina.

Beneath the two angels is the inscription CITTÀ DEL VATICANO, the mintmark R and the signatures of the authors D. Longo and SP INC. The outer ring depicts the 12 stars of Europe.

The obverse is the common face, the same for all 2-euro coins.
