In Portugal, the Lisbon Mint of the Portuguese Republic has used two different symbols over the years:

  • INCM which stands for Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda, from 2007 to 2019.
  • CASA DA MOEDA 2020 onwards.

Portugal’s first 2-euro commemorative coin was minted in 2007 and is one of those common to several European countries, namely the commemorative coin dedicated to the Treaties of Rome and their 50th Anniversary. Minted on 25/03/2007 in Lisbon (INCM).

The obverse depicts the design common to other countries, the paving of Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome with the large Treaty Book signed on 25 March 1957. To the right is the Lisbon Mint (Portugal) INCM.

Above the signed document appears the inscription EUROPA, below the year 2007 and PORTUGAL on two lines in a central flag. On the upper part of the coin, again on two lines, appears the inscription TRATADO DE ROMA / 50 ANOS. Also on the obverse side, but in the outer ring, are engraved the 12 stars of the European Union in a circle.

The reverse is the common side of the 2-euro coins distributed throughout Europe.

In 2007, the 2-euro commemorative coin for the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union was also issued. Issued on 1 June 2007.

The obverse, the National Face, depicts a large tree, specifically a cork oak with a bare trunk. On the right hand side is the inscription POR/TV/GAL on three lines and on the left hand side the Portuguese coat of arms.

The lower part of the coin is engraved in a semicircle with the signature of the author Maria Irene Vilar, the minting year 2007, the mintmark of Lisbon INCM and the inscription PRESIDÊNCIA DO CONSELHO DA UE. Then, the ring around the coin depicts the twelve stars of the European Union arranged in a circle.

The obverse depicts the common side, which is the same for all 2-euro coins, commemorative and non-memorative, showing the face value and the map of Europe.

Let’s move on to another Portuguese coin, this one is from 2008 and was minted in honour of the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights. Issued on 22/09/2008.

On the obverse of these 2 euro Portuguese coins, the Atlantic Ocean is stylised in a geometric design. On the horizon, shining like the sun, is the coat of arms of Portugal, below the words PORTUGAL and below that the date of issue of the coin: 2008.

The lower part of the coin, around the central part, is engraved with the inscription 60 ANOS DA DECLARAÇÃO UNIVERSAL DOS DIREITOS HUMANOS. To the upper right is the signature of the artist Esc. J. Duarte and the mint mark INCM. The stars that make up the logo of Europe are arranged in a circle around the central part of the coin.

The obverse of these 2 euro Portuguese coins features a stylised prehistoric man merging with the € symbol of the euro. The signature of the author Georgios Stamatopoulos is at the bottom right (ΓΣ). On the upper part of the coin bears the inscription PORTUGAL and the lower part EMU 1999-2009.

On the obverse side, the central part shows the Logo of the Lusophone Olympic Games, a stylised figure with a rhythmic gymnastics ribbon. In the upper part is the Coat of Arms of Portugal with the inscription PORTUGAL in a semicircle below.

On the lower part of the coin, along the perimeter of the coin, the Lisbon mint symbol INCM followed by the inscription 2.os JOGOS DA LUSOFONIA LISBOA and J. Aurélio, the engraver’s signature. The obverse depicts the sailing ship sailing on the waves of the sea recreated by a series of waving inscriptions referring to his writings, his destinations, the city of Lisbon and Portugal itself. TNow, te upper part is engraved with the semi-circular inscription FERNAO MENDES PINTO followed by the year 2011 and preceded by the date 1511. For the 250th anniversary of the construction of the Torre dos Clérigos in 2013, a commemorative coin was issued with the Tower in the foreground. Issued on 20/06/2013.

Specifically, on the Obverse, the Torre dos Clérigos seen from below in perspective is evident in the foreground, the Tower is positioned on the left and on the right we see the Dom Luis Bridge built over the Douro River, an arched bridge connecting Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.

The obverse of this Portuguese Commemorative Coin features a modular design that starts with the central cross, the historic symbol of the Red Cross, and multiplies as it expands through a series of repeating cubes. The obverse depicts the stylisation of an art installation by Joanna Vasconcelos, the Heart of Viana. The installation, inspired by typical Viana do Castelo jewellery, was made to support the athletes of the Portuguese Olympic Games team.

Under the tip of the heart is engraved the Lisbon Mint’s symbol INCM, and to its right the symbol of the Rio Olympics. To the left of the coin, along the lap, is the signature of the author JOANA VASCONCELOS and to the right the inscription EQUIPA OLÍMPICA DE PORTUGAL 2016.

On the obverse of the 2016 Portugal 2-euro coin is the Ponte 25 de Abril (Salazar Bridge until 1975), built in 1966 over the River Tagus to link Lisbon and Almada. The bridge is drawn in perspective and the word PORTUGAL is inscribed on the right-hand side of the coin, with the coat of arms of Portugal underneath.

For 2019, Portugal has chosen to commemorate Ferdinand Magellan on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his circumnavigation! Portuguese explorer who gives his name to the Strait of Magellan, as well as the first European navigator on the waters of the Pacific. Coin of 8/05/2019.

The obverse of these proudly Portuguese 2 euro coins features a portrait of Magellan with his deep gaze scanning the horizon to our left. To the left is the inscription 2019 – PORTUGAL preceded by the INCM symbol of the Portuguese Mint and the signature of the author Luís Filipe Abreu. At the bottom is engraved on two lines along the circle: CIRCUM NAVEGAÇÃO / 1519 FERNÃO✦DE✦MÃGÃLHÃES.

Around it is the nickel and copper crown engraved with the symbol of Europe, consisting of a succession of 12 five-pointed stars arranged in a circle.

The obverse of the coin. or reverse, there is the Common Face with the face value of the coin: 2€, with the map of European countries.

Commemorative coin celebrating the Portuguese team’s participation in the 33rd Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020, which due to the covid have been postponed to July/August 2021. Issue 18/05/2021.

Despite the fact that they take place from 23 July to 8 August 2021, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games retain the date 2020 in their name. An unprecedented situation has arisen due to the global Covid19 pandemic.

On the obverse side there is the Portuguese Cross of the Order of the Knights of Christ, the identifying logo of the Olympic team of Portugal with the flagstaff and underneath the 5 intersecting rings symbolising the Olympics. Around it is the inscription 2021 PORTUGAL NOS JOGOS OLIMPICOS DE TOQUIO ’20. To the left is the name of the Portuguese Mint CASA DA MOEDA and the signature of the author Francisco Providência. The coin’s outer ring depicts in a circle the 12 stars symbolising the European Union.
